Balochistan
Balochistan or Baluchistan (Balochi: بلوچستان, lit. Land of the Baloch) is an arid desert and mountainous region on the Iranian plateau in south-western Asia, northwest of the Arabian Sea and the national homeland of the Baloch people. It stretches across southwestern Pakistan, southeastern Iran, and a small section of southwestern Afghanistan. The southern part of Balochistan is Makran.
The second most populous linguistic group in the region is the Pashto-speaking Pashtun people. Brahui is spoken by the Brahui people. Punjabi and Sindhi are also spoken as first languages in Pakistani Balochistan and by Hindki in Afghanistan. Urdu is used as second language in Pakistan. Persian is used as a second language in Iran and Afghanistan.
Etymology
The Baloch people once referred to their land as Moka or Maka, a word which later became Makran. Moka might have been an adaptation of Mahi-khoran, Persian for "fish eaters," an appellation used by the Persians of the west for the people of coastal Balochistan. Arrian, in his Anabasis Alexandri, referred to the people of the region as the ichythophagi, a Greek translation of Mahi-khoran.

i/ˈpækᵻstæn/ or i/pɑːkiˈstɑːn/; Urdu: پاكستان ALA-LC: Pākistān, pronounced [pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاكستان ALA-LC: Islāmī Jumhūriyah Pākistān IPA: [ɪslɑːmiː d͡ʒʊmɦuːriəɪh pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), is a country in South Asia. It is the sixth-most populous country with a population exceeding 199 million people. It is the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area with an area covering 881,913 km2 (340,509 sq mi). Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast respectively. It is separated from Tajikistan by Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
The territory that now constitutes Pakistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the Mehrgarh of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including Hindus, Indo-Greeks, Muslims, Turco-Mongols, Afghans and Sikhs. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the subcontinent's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of the Subcontinent where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.

Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة al-ǧazīrah IPA: [æl dʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Peninsula", referring to the Arabian Peninsula), also known as JSC (Jazeera Satellite Channel), is a Doha-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which is partly funded by the House of Thani, the ruling family of Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages.
Al Jazeera is among the largest news organizations with 80 bureaus around the world. Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. While Al Jazeera officials have stated that they are editorially independent from the government of Qatar, this assertion has been disputed.
The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.

To say Pakistan is close to our hearts would be a master understatement. It was here in the late 90s that the whole idea for Wild Frontiers came about, and it was through these amazing mountains that we ran our first trip. Of course the world and our business as moved on a long way since then but we still feel this is a country that offers the adventurous traveller an extraordinary experience.
Pakistan is a large country, from Karachi in the south to the Khunjerab Pass leading to China it covers stretches over 2,000 kilometres and is home so some 200 million people. And although we have recently put on a new tour that focuses on the south and in particular the amazing sites of the Indus Civilisation that blossomed in these parts some 5,000 years ago, for the most tourism to Pakistan will focus on the north.
A great access point to this region is Lahore. As the cultural capital of the country it is a fascinating town, steeped in history with a plethora of great sites to visit, including the famous Lahore Museum, the Moghul fort and Badshahi Mosque, the old town and the Wazir Khan Mosque.
Four hours’ drive north of Lahore is the nation’s new capital Islamabad – with its spectacular Faisal Mosque – and from here the mountains begin.
And what mountains they are. The three largest mountain ranges on earth converge here, setting a backdrop to one of the most spectacular journeys you are ever likely to take as you swing from the Hindu Kush, through the Karakorum’s to the Himalayas.
The first place of interest is Chitral. An ancient mountain kingdom, until very recently cut off from the rest of the country for 6 months of the year, this region is a great place to kick off your trip to the north. The town boasts the famous old fort, scene of the British siege of 1895, a spectacular mosque and games of frontier polo, a sport locals will tell you originated here.
The region is also home to the Kalash, and ancient people that inhabit three narrow valleys that buttress up against the Afghan frontier. As the last of the pagan tribes that inhabit the Hindu Kush the Kalash, a race that claim decedents from the armies of Alexander the Great, the Kalash are known for their festivals of dancing and singing and represent a true highlight of any trip to the country.
From Chitral Town you can take one of the most spectacular roads anywhere in the world, around the towering form of Mount Tirich Mir, which at 7,500m is the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush, to Mastuj and on over the Shandur Pass. As a watershed between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, this is a great place to walk and enjoy a picnic, or if you are here in early July enjoy a gathering of thousands for the highest polo game played anywhere in the world.
From Here you will drive on through Gilgit where you can see relics from the regions Buddhist past, before driving on up the famous Karakoram Highway – or KKH as it’s locally known – to one of the most beautiful places anywhere on earth, the Hunza valley. Besides just taking in the epic views, here you can visit the UNESCO restored Baltit Fort, and the neighbouring Altit Fort, and go for walks both through local meadows and on nearby glaciers. There is also the new lake at Attabad, formed by a massive rockslide in 2010, on which you can take a boat ride.
And from here, if not travelling on to China over the Khunjerab Pass, you can head still further east, following the Indus, to Skardu.
If you want to go trekking this region offers the best hikes anywhere in the world, ranging from 3 to 4 day walks to the epic K2 Concordia trek. And conversely the region also boasts some of the norths best hotels at Shigar Fort and Khaplu Place. It is also where the Wild Frontiers Foundation build its first school.
There are of course many other interesting sites to visit such as Peshawar and the Khyber Pass, Fairy Meadows, sitting in the lee of the giant Nangar Pharbat, the point at which the three great mountain ranges collide and the beautiful Dosia Plateau.

The name Quetta is derived from the Pashto (the language of Afghanistan) word "Kwatta" which means a fort and relates to the fact that the city is a natural fort, being ringed by hills, dominated by three mountains: Chiltan, Zarghun and Koh-e-Murdar, all of which are capped with snow in the winter.
Strategically, Quetta is an important city due to its proximity to borders with Iran and Afghanistan. Historically, however, Quetta owes much of its importance to the Bolan Pass which links it to Kandahar, Afghanistan. An ancient city, Quetta has been a place of human habitation since pre-historic times. Known as the fruit basket of Pakistan, Quetta if famous for its wild tulips, saffron fields and its glorious selection of fruits and nuts, which include; plums, peaches, pomegranates, apricots, apples, guavas (locally called zaitoon), melons, cherries, pistachios and almonds.
Climate
Quetta is 1,680 meters (5,500 feet) above sea level and enjoys a healthy climate. The temperature drops a few degrees below the freezing point in winter.
History
It is not known when Quetta was first inhabited, but most likely it was settled during the 6th century. The region remained part of the Sassanid Persian Empire and was later annexed by the Rashidun Caliphate during the 7th century Islamic conquest. The first detailed account of Quetta relates to its capture, in the 11th century by Mahmud of Ghazni. The Mughals ruled Quetta until 1556, when the Persians conquered the city, only to have it retaken by the Mughals in 1595. The powerful Khans of Kalat held the fort from 1730. Although occupied briefly by the British during the First Afghan War in 1839, it was not until 1876 that Quetta came under the control of the British Empire. Since Partition, the population of Quetta has increased dramatically; it has also become a popular Pakistani tourism destination.

The first detailed account of Quetta relates to its capture, in the 11th century by Mahmud of Ghazni. The Mughals ruled Quetta until 1556, when the Persians conquered the city, only to have it retaken by the Mughals in 1595. The powerful Khans of Kalat held the fort from 1730. Although occupied briefly by the British during the First Afghan War in 1839, it was not until 1876 that Quetta came under the control of the British Empire. Since Partition, the population of Quetta has increased dramatically; it has also become a popular Pakistani tourism destination.

This is during our two night stay in Quetta as we went on to explore and mingle with the locals, it was a great experience, the trip was an initiative to create inter-province harmony by the name of "Karwan-e-yakjehti" where more than 1000 students from all over Pakistan visited Quetta under the security provided by Pakistan Army
Quetta is the provincial capital of Balochistan, Pakistan and the ninth-largest city of the country.[4] The city is known as the fruit garden of Pakistan, due to the numerous fruit orchards in and around it, and the large variety of fruits and dry fruits produced there. [5] The immediate area has long been one of pastures and mountains, with varied plants and animals relative to the dry plains to the west. Quetta is at an average elevation of 1,680 meters (5,510 feet) above sea level,[6] making it Pakistan's only high-altitude major city. The population of the city is estimated to be approximately 1,172,000.[3]
Located in northwestern Balochistan near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Quetta is a trade and communication center between the two countries. The city lies on the Bolan Pass route which was once the only gateway from Central Asia to South Asia. Quetta played an important role militarily for the Pakistani Armed Forces in the intermittent Afghanistan conflict

QUETTA Aug 9 (PPI): Balochistan future is bright. Pakistan’s development is linked with this province. This province has been confronted with deprivation for several decades but government in office has paid full attention and took better measures for ending its backwardness and sense of deprivation. Most modern and deep sea port was being set up in Balochistan while new projects were being launched under CPEC to end sense of deprivation of people of Balochistan and networks of roads were being laid. Projects launched during present government period would be completed in time so that journey of development does not affect and people enjoy its fruit.
These views were expressed by President Mamnoon Hussain while addressing 14 th Convocation of University of Balochistan her e Wednesday.
Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai, provincial ministers, Vice chancellor Dr Javaid Iqbal and senior officers were also present.
Speaker Ms Rahila Durrani, Vice chancellors of public sector Universities, educationists, passed out graduates and others were also present.
President Mamnoon said that Balochistan is very fertile region of Pakistan that has given birth to such personalities who have indelible prints of their knowledge, abilities and works on the pages of history. It is interesting historic incidence that word was looking at us once again with hope and Balochistan has key role in it. He said at this crucial juncture of national history youth of Balochistan were going to play a role that not only this province and country but entire world look at them proudly. He said the doorstep of economic revolution on which country particularly Balochistan was standing, this ceremony in that context is very important. He said he can say with confidence that such fortunate youth are present among them who would lead national struggle for making country’s future bright. He said he was confident of abilities of Balochistan youth who would fulfill responsibilities shouldered on them by the country in a better way.
President said that he congratulates students, their parents and teachers and pray for their more successes and prosperity in coming days. He said in addition he also hopes that by stepping into practical life they would work with still greater dedication and devotion and show more responsibility in discharge of their obligations.
He said intelligent Balochistan youth particularly women have achieved excellent performance in Public Service Commission and other senior posts examination and this is the real path.
He asked students to apprise them of situation around them ,new trends so that they do not face worries of changing world’s political, social and economic fronts.
Mamnoon said it is special blessing of Almighty Allah that they were getting historic opportunities of meeting world due to Gwadar Port and projects associated with Economic Corridor. Do not make delay in benefitting from these opportunities.
He said according to Quaid e Azam’s saying they should keep aloof from practical politics but do not avoid playing role for national development stability and security.
He said our country particularly Balochistan was going to link with the world by land, sea and air it is necessary that we should fully expose our abilities.
He desired that educational institutions of Baochstna particularly UoB should also play its role for developing tourism, hostelling and food trends and promote culture in professional manner.
Speaking on the occasion Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai said higher education has been promote dint he province during past four years and owing to our continued struggle and full attention educational matters and process of teaching was developing. At Balochistan’s public sector Universities convocations are held regularly and one of the examples is 14 th Convocation of UoB today.
He congratulated passed out students for securing gold medals and degrees and expressed good wishes for them for their success and bright future.
Vice chancellor Dr Javaid Iqbal also presented address of welcome.
Earlier President conferred degrees and awarded gold medals among girl and boy students passed out from the university. He appreciated untiring efforts of University administration and congratulated passed out students.
President Mamnoon also inaugurated Expo Centre.
