Uttarkashi (Hindi: उत्तरकाशी ), meaning Kashi of the north, is a town in Uttarakhand, India. It is the district headquarters of Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level. Uttarkashi is home to a number of ashrams and temples and also to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The name of the town reflects its similarity to and location (as north of) the city of Kashi (Varanasi). Similar to Varanasi, town of Uttarkashi is situated on the Ganges, lies next to a hill named Varun Parvat, on confluence of two rivers Varuna and Asi, has a ghat called Manikarnika Ghat and has a temple dedicated to Shiva (Kashi Vishwanath Temple) in the center of the town.

There are many small and big rivers in Uttarkashi district. The Yamuna and the Ganges (Bhagirathi) are biggest and holiest among them, their origin is Yamunotri and Gangotri (Gomukh) respectively. Asi ganga and jad ganga are some of the tributaries of the Ganges.
Uttarkashi town comes to life during the yatra season! Uttarkashi is a holy town in Uttarakhand india . It lies just near the source of both the Ganges and Yamuna rivers and en route to Gangotri Glacier. A number of hydro power projects have been planned along the Ganga, by companies such as NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation). The terrain and climate of Uttarkashi district provide uncongenial physical environment for human settlement. Yet undaunted by hazards and hardships this land was inhabited by hill tribes since ancient times. The famous Uttar kashi earthquake cause great damage to the region some decades back, but the town has bounced back and is a major pilgrim center along the Ganges route. Part 2: I did hope to do this in 8 days; the 17km from Uttarkashi to Laluna by taxi, then the next 150km up to Kedarnath walking. No guide, no porter, no tent, no hindi, but a bad map, a compass, an altimeter, a sleeping bag in a 15kg backpack and my Swamiji!!! Many broken bridges, lots of leeches, lots of swimming in the rivers (in my shoes too), lots of rain and lots of thank you's... Warning: the Uttaranchal map (approved by Survey of India) has many mistakes; missing roads, villages that don't exist (anymore), false distances and false altitudes... better ask locals, when is the next village if any! Om Sai Ram

A small temple holds strong against furious tides of the Ganga, even after a month of the floods that destroyed many villages in Uttarakhand. In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. Though parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in India, some regions of Western Nepal, and some parts of Western Tibet also experienced heavy rainfall, over 95% of the casualties occurred in Uttarakhand. As of 16 July 2013, according to figures provided by the Uttarakhand government, more than 5,700 people were "presumed dead." This total included 934 local residents. Destruction of bridges and roads left about 100,000 pilgrims and touris...

This Video captures the journey from Haridwar to Joshimath during our Badrinath Yatra few years back. However, nothing much remains after the Uttrakhand Flood in 15 June 2013. Badrinath is a sacred place of Hindus who believe it to be the abode of Lord Vishnu. The town of Badrinath is spread over a stretch of 3 km in a valley between two mountain ranges: Nar and Narayan, at an altitude of 3,133 metres and just 44 km from Joshimath in Uttranchal, India.Apart from a religious destination along the Char Dham pilgrimage, Badrinath is also acclaimed for its scenic beauty and awesome recreational spots.Badrinath town is a major attraction to most of the campers and trekkers for its natural scenic beauty. This Video is about the Yatra from Haridwar to Joshimath.
