Mahbubnagar district

Mahbubnagar (formerly Palamoor), is a district in the state of Telangana in India. Mahbubnagar is the district headquarters of the district.

Etymology

Mahbubnagar was formerly known as "Rukmammapet", "Palamoor". The name was changed to Mahbubnagar on 4 December 1890, in honour of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, the Nizam of Hyderabad (1869–1911 AD). During the Nizam era, the people of this area used to sell milk, so it was named as "Palamoor".

History

The area that forms current Mahbubnagar district has held historic significance. The region was at the core of the Satavahana dynasty from 221 BC to 218 AD, and also a large part of the Chalukya dynasty from the 5th to the 11th century AD. The region was later part of the Kingdom of Golkonda (c. 1364 – 1512 AD), with its capital city Golkonda located near Hyderabad.

In 1518 it came under control of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which reigned until 1687. The region was then a part of Hyderabad State, ruled by the Asaf Jahi dynasty, from 1724 to 1948. Mahbubnagar was most likely an historically Buddhist area, as many historic temples were destroyed by the Asaf Jahi rulers. There are no Buddhist temples remaining, however.

Mahabubnagar

Mahabubnagar, also known as Palamoor, is a city in Mahabubnagar district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and the headquarters of Mahabubnagar mandal in Mahabubnagar revenue division.

Geography

Mahabubnagar is located at 16°44′N 77°59′E / 16.73°N 77.98°E / 16.73; 77.98. It has an average elevation of 498 metres (1633 feet). The city of Mahabubnagar is located at a distance of 98 km from Hyderabad 108 km from Kurnool and 109 km from Raichur.

Demographics

At the 2011 census, Mahabubnagar had a population of 210,143. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Mahabubnagar has an average literacy rate of 82.5%, higher than the national average of 74.04.%: male literacy is 89.33%, and female literacy is 76.26%. In Mahabubnagar, 12% of the population is younger than six years of age.

Governance

Mahabubnagar municipality was formed in the year 1952 and was upgraded to special grade in 2004. It is spread over an area of 98.64 km² (38.09 sq mi). Mahbubnagar urban agglomeration consists of Mahbubnagar municipality, census towns of Boyapalle, Yenugonda and the out growths of Mahbubnagar (rural) (full), Yedira (part) village.

Kiran Rao is an Indian film producer, screenwriter and director.

Early life

Kiran Rao was born into a family from Telangana on 7 November 1973. Her paternal grandfather was J. Rameshwar Rao, Raja of Wanaparthy, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state. She was raised in Kolkata where she attended Loreto House . In 1992, her parents decided to leave Kolkata so she moved to Mumbai. She graduated with an economics major from the Sophia College for Women (Mumbai) in 1995. She attended the Social Communications Media course at the Sophia Polytechnic for two months, but then quit and left for Delhi. She got her Masters at AJK Mass Communication Research Center at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her first maternal cousin is actress, Aditi Rao Hydari.

Career

Kiran Rao started her career as an assistant director in the epic film Lagaan directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, whom she also assisted later on Swades: We, the People. Lagaan was nominated for 74th Academy Awards in the foreign language film category. Aamir Khan produced and starred in the same film. Before Lagaan she has also done minute role of supporting actress in Dil Chahta Hai'. She also worked as Second Assistant Director with Academy Award nominated director Mira Nair on the indie hit Monsoon Wedding.

Telangana

Telangana (ⁱ/tɛlənˈɡɑːnə/) is a state in South India and one of the 29 states in India. It was formed on 2 June 2014 with the city of Hyderabad as its capital. Telangana is bordered by the states of Maharashtra to the north and North west, Chhattisgarh to the North, Karnataka to the west, and Andhra Pradesh to the east and south. Telangana has an area of 114,840 square kilometres (44,340 sq mi), and a population of 35,193,978 (2011 census). making it the twelfth largest state in India, and the twelfth most populated state in India, Its major cities include Hyderabad, Warangal, Nizamabad, and Karimnagar.

Telangana acquired its identity as the Telugu-speaking region of the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by the Nizam of Hyderabad, joining the Union of India in 1948. In 1956, the Hyderabad state was dissolved as part of the linguistic reorganisation of states and Telangana was merged with former Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. Following a movement for separation, it was awarded separate statehood on 2 June 2014. Hyderabad will continue to serve as the joint capital city for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period of not more than ten years.
