Men perform Pandav Nritya, one of the prominent and folk dance forms of Garhwal in Uttarakhand, India.
Pandav Nritya is a dance form that explains the birth and life of the great Pandava kings. The Mahabharata is an important epic that gives some valuable lessons for life. This dance expresses the great story in simple dance movements. The flow of the story keeps the audience glued to these dance performances.
The Pandavas were deceived by their own cousins, the Kauravas and what followed this was the epic war Kurukshetra. Legend has it that this is one of those wars where huge armies were involved and immense losses happened. The Pandav Nritya explains many instances of the Mahabharatha which changed the whole course of the epic. For example, the dice game between the Pandavas and the Kauravas is one such example where the latter made the former to pledge everything including Draupati, the wife of the Pandavas. Draupati was dragged into the court where the dice game was being played and treated badly by the Kauravas. This angered the Pandavas so much, that each of the five great Pandava kings made a vow to attack the Kaurava kings as an act of revenge. This episode is explained through the Pandava Nritya so beautifully that the audience is able to feel the anger of the Pandava kings. The dice game is a much sought after by the audience wherever the Pandav Nritya is performed.
Another important episode of Mahabharata which is often performed in the Pandav Nritya is the scene where Lord Krishna explains Bhagavad Gita to the great Pandav king, Arjun. The viewers are in for a visual treat whenever this episode is performed. The Gita is the most valuable lesson in life and though the words are simple, the meaning is intense. Similarly, in the Pandav Nritya, the dance movements are quite simple; however the expressions are stoic and create a great impact on the audience watching the performance.
The Pandav Nritya is one of the oldest forms of folk dances that have originated from Uttaranchal. The golden rule, life history, obstacles and finally the enlightenment through Gita is explained in a phased manner through intricate dance movements.
