It was 1952, and polio gripped the world in fear. There was no known cause, no cure and no help in sight for parents desperate to protect their children. Across the ocean, eager to beat the potentially fatal condition, polio-afflicted President Roosevelt inspired the American public to send in their dimes to fund research.
In just a few years Joseph Salk, an ambitious 33-year-old scientist working from his basement lab in Pittsburgh, would bring infantile paralysis to its knees and change the course of medical history. World-renowned experts and survivors tell the extraordinary story of how Dr Salk and the legendary 'march of dimes' came together to help conquer polio.

The Polio Epidemic wreaked havoc on America from 1916 until 1955, when a vaccine finally came out. In an era of advancing technology and increased understandings of health, this epidemic seemed to have come out of nowhere--and still today, no one is certain how it was being spread--striking innocent children, leaving them not dead, but crippled for life, a cruel reminder of the Polio attack. Then as suddenly as it had started, the disease receded for the winter months...and came back when summer rolled over. A survey showed, during the dark years of the epidemic, the only thing feared more than Polio, was a nuclear winter.

Fewer than 50 cases of a mysterious, polio-like illness have been diagnosed in the United States. At least 20 confirmed cases are in California. One of those is Lucian Olivera, now three years old. His mother, Erin, a registered nurse, describes how the family got a diagnosis for his illness and how they cope with it.
Health officials have yet to identify the cause of this illness, but it is not polio, the disease that devastated thousands of adults and children before a vaccine was discovered in the 1950s. Although several of the patients with polio-like illness in California have tested positive for enterovirus D68, health officials say it is not an epidemic. But in these patients, what often started out as cold-like symptoms or something as simple as a low fever sometimes developed into respiratory failure and, in Lucian's case and others, polio-like paralysis.

Polio Documentary - The Vaccine That Changed The World - World Documentary HD
Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. In about 0.5% of cases there is muscle weakness resulting in an inability to move.[1] This can occur over a few hours to few days.[1][2] The weakness most often involves the legs but may less commonly involve the muscles of the head, neck and diaphragm. Many but not all people fully recover. In those with muscle weakness about 2% to 5% of children and 15% to 30% of adults die.[1] Another 25% of people have minor symptoms such as fever and a sore throat and up to 5% have headache, neck stiffness and pains in the arms and legs.[1][2] These people are usually back to normal within one or two weeks. In up to 70% of infections there are no symptoms.[1] Years after recovery post-polio syndrome may occur, with a slow development of muscle weakness similar to that which the person had during the initial infection.[3]
Poliovirus is usually spread from person to person through infected fecal matter entering the mouth.[1] It may also be spread by food or water containing human feces and less commonly from infected saliva.[1][2] Those who are infected may spread the disease for up to six weeks even if no symptoms are present. The disease may be diagnosed by finding the virus in the feces or detecting antibodies against it in the blood.[1]
The disease is preventable with the polio vaccine; however, a number of doses are required for it to be effective.[2] The United States Center for Disease Control recommends polio vaccination boosters for travelers and those who live in countries where the disease is occurring.[4] Once infected there is no specific treatment.[2] In 2013 polio affected 416 people down from 350,000 cases in 1988.[2] In 2014 the disease was only spreading between people in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.[2] In 2015 Nigeria had stopped the spread of wild poliovirus.[5]
Poliomyelitis has existed for thousands of years, with depictions of the disease in ancient art.[1] The disease was first recognized as a distinct condition by Michael Underwood in 1789[1] and the virus that causes it was first identified in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner.[6] Major outbreaks started to occur in the late 19th century in Europe and the United States.[1] In the 20th century it became one of the most worrying childhood diseases in these areas.[7] The first polio vaccine was developed in the 1950s by Jonas Salk.[8] It is hoped that vaccination efforts and early detection of cases will result in global eradication of the disease by 2018.[9] In 2013; however, there were reports of new cases in Syria[10] and in May 2014, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern due to outbreaks of the disease in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.[11] The disease does not naturally occur in any other animals.

Poliomyelitis (pōlee ō mī ə lītiss), often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an acute, viral, infectious disease spread from person to person, primarily via the fecal-oral route. The term derives from the Greek poliós (πολιός), meaning "grey", myelós (µυελός), referring to the "spinal cord", and the suffix -itis, which denotes inflammation.
Although approximately 90% of polio infections cause no symptoms at all, affected individuals can exhibit a range of symptoms if the virus enters the blood stream. In about 1% of cases, the virus enters the central nervous system, preferentially infecting and destroying motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness and acute flaccid paralysis. Different types of paralysis may occur, depending on the nerves involved. Spinal polio is the most common form, characterized by asymmetric paralysis that most often involves the legs. Bulbar polio leads to weakness of muscles innervated by cranial nerves. Bulbospinal polio is a combination of bulbar and spinal paralysis.

The disease is preventable with the polio vaccine; however, a number of doses are required for it to be effective.[2] The United States Center for Disease Control recommends polio vaccination boosters for travelers and those who live in countries where the disease is occurring.[4] Once infected there is no specific treatment.[2] In 2013 polio affected 416 people down from 350,000 cases in 1988.[2] In 2014 the disease was only spreading between people in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.[2] In 2015 Nigeria had stopped the spread of wild poliovirus.[5]
