The Beautiful Ones

"The Beautiful Ones" is the third track on Prince and The Revolution's soundtrack album Purple Rain. Produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince, the song was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles by Peggy Mac and David Leonard in early September 1983.

"The Beautiful Ones" is a haunting musical tale of emotional longing and unrequited love. Starting out as a slow falsetto ballad, with Prince's piano and organ-sounding synthesizers providing a lush backdrop, it gradually builds in volume and intensity, and by the end of the song, Prince is screaming out "Do you want him, or do you want me? 'Cause I want you." The song comes to a quiet close, with Prince's keyboards and drum solo serving as the closing instrumentation.

The song replaced "Electric Intercourse" on the Purple Rain album. It was originally written for Susannah Melvoin (Revolution band member Wendy's twin sister) to woo her away from her then–boyfriend.

In the film, Prince sings the song directly from the stage to Apollonia, who is sitting with his rival Morris Day. The song is a direct and urgent appeal to Apollonia to choose Prince as her lover — and it is a direct challenge to Day. Ultimately, as the song ends and Prince lies, apparently spent, on the floor of the stage, Apollonia leaves in tears. (Later, she surprises him when he is unlocking his bike to leave.)

Beautiful Ones

"Beautiful Ones" is the second single from the album Coming Up by Suede, released on October 14, 1996 on Nude Records. The song became a Top Ten hit in the UK, peaking at #8.

Background

Billboard wrote: "like a fast-mangled Oasis song, The London Suede succeeded in making sounds of pop/rock that are definitely unique. The painfully true lyrics and vibrant sounds have already proved to be a hit in the U.K."

Music video

The video for the title song was directed by Pedro Romhanyi, who previously made the video for the band's song, "Animal Nitrate".

The Beautiful is the second album and the first studio recording by Triptych Myth, a trio consisting of Cooper-Moore on piano, Tom Abbs on bass and Chad Taylor on drums. It was recorded in 2005 and released on the AUM Fidelity label. "Frida K. The Beautiful" is dedicated to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. "Pooch" is dedicated to bassist Wilber Morris.

The All About Jazz review by Michael McCaw states "The Beautiful is a deeply affecting album of piano-driven interplay that seamlessly spans a range of jazz genres without a hint of trepidation or a false step."

In his review for JazzTimes Mike Shanley notes that "Free jazz might often consist of blistering, harsh sonorities, but these three prove that the quest for beauty is as much a part of this music as catharsis."

The Beautiful (band)

The Beautiful was an American rock band from New York City, with a line-up that consisted of Jonathan Lacey (vocals, guitar), Perry Bottke (bass), and Frank Ferrer (drums). Signed to Warner Bros. subsidiary Giant Records (Warner), the group issued a pair of releases - a five-song, self-titled EP in September 1990, and a full-length album, Storybook, in May 1992. The group received some media coverage, including a feature article in Rip Magazine and a video clip for the song "John Doe" being aired on the Headbanger's Ball program on MTV, but by 1993, the group split up.

Since 2006, Frank Ferrer has been a member of Guns N' Roses (replacing Bryan Mantia) - supplying drums on the songs "Chinese Democracy", "Better", "If the World", "There Was a Time" & "I.R.S." on their 2008 album, Chinese Democracy, and touring throughout the world with the band. After the Beautiful and prior to joining Guns N' Roses, Ferrer also played drums for a variety of acts, including The Psychedelic Furs, Perry Farrell, Wyclef Jean, and Tool (band), among others.
