Poke - pokee, pokay… it’s a seafood dish that's a staple in Hawaii and it’s getting popular here in the mainland. Today, i’m going to show you 3 ways to make it - the original Shoyu, spicy poke, and kimchi poke! I’m going to go over the basics first and then build upon them to create more interesting flavors!
So how do you pronounce pokay? I’ve learned that it’s poh - kay and rhymes with OKAY! Snap me at Honeysucklebee to tell me how you say it and be sure to check out myInstagram at HoneysuckleCatering. Alright, so let’s start with our first version - the Shoyu Poke.
In a large bowl, I’m combining 1 lb of fresh ahi tuna steaks that I cut into 1 inch chunks against the grain. I always try to look for wild caught ahi tuna because it is sustainable and doesn’t have any of that unnatural stuff in farm raised fish. When choosing fish consider three of these things before consuming it raw: smell - Fresh fish should have a very light smell to almost no smell at all. Color - fresh fish should have a nice crimson color and texture - it should be firm to the touch. Be sure to ask your fishmonger if you have any questions at all!
Next, I’ll combine ¼ cups of soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tsp freshly grated ginger that I’ve pounded in my mortar and pestle, half a sweet maui onion that I’ve chopped up, 1 stalk of green onion, chopped, sea salt to taste, and a little bit of togarashi, which is japanese chili powder. If you can’t find this at the store you can always substitute with cayenne pepper. I’ll mix it lightly then let it marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving.
Wasn’t that easy? Now we’ll just use our shoyu poke and build upon it to make the spicy poke.
In small bowl, i’m adding ½ cup of mayo - i’m using this Japanese mayo called kewpie. Kewpie is a smoother, creamer mayonnaise that uses rice vinegar instead of white vinegar, like traditional mayonnaise here. Have you ever tried it? Next I’ll add in 1 tbsp of sriracha - feel free to adjust if you don’t like it too spicy. And I’ll add in 2 tsps of tobiko which is flying fish roe. I like it because it adds a poppy crunch. I’ll mix it well, then add it to the shoyu poke and give it a light toss until the fish is coated. I like to sprinkle a little bit more of the tobiko on top for extra color. I’ll let it marinate in the fridge for two hours and then enjoy!
Last but not least, our Kimchi poke. This one is quite simple and I recommend already having kimchi on hand! I’m using my shoyu poke as a base here again, and in a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1 tbsp honey and I’ll mix it well. Next, I’m taking ¼ cup of kimchi that I made and I’ll chop it into small pieces. You can find my kimchi recipe in the link below. I’ll add it to the oyster sauce mixture, along with 1 tbsp of the kimchi juice, and I’ll mix it well. Now I’ll lightly toss it with the shoyu ahi poke and let it marinate for another 2 hours and enjoy! For each of these recipes the marinating time is only two hours, not four.
Each one tastes so unique. The shoyu poke is the most simple of them all, but it really is so tasty. The spicy poke is creamy and has the perfect amount of spiciness and the tobiko gives it a little bit of texture that’s so interesting. Finally, the kimchi poke - I love kimchi so this combo was a no-brainer for me and it’s so delicious paired with rice, like a poke bowl. When I went to Maui this past summer for my honeymoon, I went to Foodland almost every day to try their pokes. They had Shoyu, spicy California Roll, Wasabi, Lemu, everything under the sun! I like to pair it with Taro chips that were so good.

There are lots of reasons to visit Hawaii, but the best reason in my opinion is to take advantage of the delicious food. You'll find all sorts of, especially Asian food, and a lot of local Hawaiian food as well. One of the ultimate things I love to eat in Hawaii is known as poke. Hawaiian poke is basically cubes of raw fish marinated in a variety of seasonings that usually includes soy sauce and sesame oil, among many different other ingredients depending on what you order.
Normally as soon as possible, after landing in Honolulu, I go straight to the nearest restaurant to grab some fresh poke. It's like candy for me, and I could eat it every single day of my life - it really is one of my favorite foods in the world. There are all sorts of different types of poke, including spicy ahi poke, shoyu poke, salmon poke, and even poke made with different kinds of seafood. One of the most common and beloved types of Hawaiian poke is made from freshly caught ahi, which is tuna.
Often times poke is bought by the pound, in small plastic containers, and then eaten along with a full Hawaiian style meal, or picnic. Poke goes great with fried chicken, SPAM musubi, fried noodles, or it actually just goes great by itself, or with only a hot fresh bowl of rice. Something that is very popular these days is called a poke bowl. You basically order as much rice as you want, and then they put the raw fish right on top of the hot rice in a bowl. You can get poke bowls all over Hawaii and Honolulu, but one of the best places on the island, is a little convenience store known as Kahuku Superette.
Kahuku Superette is a very average looking shop in the small town of Kahuku, on the island of Oahu. It really doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in you'll immediately see mostly beer and drinks that they are selling, and canned goods. But keep walking towards the back of the shop, and that's when you'll see the glass cabinet fridge, showcasing a beautiful display of fresh poke. There are only a few choices to choose from at Kahuku Superette, and probably the most popular is their sweet onion shoyu poke. You can order it with no rice, but I think the best way to get it is with hot white rice at the bottom, and at least a half a pound of the poke right on top.
They only have takeaway, so after you order, you can either eat some right there in your car, or you can drive to the nearest beach like we did. Whatever you decide, your mouth is going to be watering as soon as you get your poke bowl. Along with poke at Kahuku Superette, they also have things like kimchi, which also goes great with rice and raw fish.
So we headed to go to the nearest beach, and I was incredibly excited to start digging in. The cubes of fish were literally like butter, extremely tender and just melted in my mouth. The pieces of fish were also extremely flavorful, coated in a wonderful sauce made from lots of sesame oil, soy sauce, and those wonderful sweet onions, and also a hint of chili pepper. The poke bowl, including cold fish along with hot fresh steamed rice, is one of the world's great combinations, and it never gets old for me.

After recently catching a bluefin tuna in Cape Cod, our good friend Anuvat took some time to show us how to make some spicy bluefin tuna poke with his catch.
Here is the full ingredient list (scale up or down depending on taste and how much tuna you have):
2 pounds of bluefin tuna (can also use yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, blackfin tuna, etc.)
3-4 garlic cloves
1-2 scallions
1/2 white onion (or hawaiian onion)
4-5 slices of fresh ginger
1 tablespoon of sesame oil
1-2 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds
1/4 Cup of Shoyu (soy sauce)
2-3 Thai chili peppers
1/4 container of Japanese tokarashi Powder (use less if you want it to be less spicy)
A couple of pinches of salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
A few pinches of sugar to taste

Way back in December of 2014, we took a little trip to Hawaii with Action Bronson.
Action was a guest of RVCA at their house on the North Shore to witness the Pipeline Masters surfing competition, and he curated a little barbecue for a group of surfers as well as played a show in Honolulu. In between all the rapping, grilling, and surfing, we made it to Kahuku Superette, the finest purveyor of poke on Oahu. It was a life-changing moment for Action, and its effects are still felt nine months later. With a slight lull in touring for Mr. Wonderful, Action decided to whip up some poke of his own, as well as a vegan version with golden beets that’s so good, everyone who eats it will want to proclaim you king for the day. I’m using my shoyu poke as a base here again, and in a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1 tbsp honey and I’ll mix it well. Next, I’m taking ¼ cup of kimchi that I made and I’ll chop it into small pieces. You can find my kimchi recipe in the link below. I’ll add it to the oyster sauce mixture, along with 1 tbsp of the kimchi juice, and I’ll mix it well. Now I’ll lightly toss it with the shoyu ahi poke and let it marinate for another 2 hours and enjoy! For each of these recipes the marinating time is only two hours, not four. Each one tastes so unique. The shoyu poke is the most simple of them all, but it really is so tasty. The spicy poke is creamy and has the perfect amount of spiciness and the tobiko gives it a little bit of texture that’s so interesting. Finally, the kimchi poke - I love kimchi so this combo was a no-brainer for me and it’s so delicious paired with rice, like a poke bowl. Hawaiian poke, and the poke bowl, is one of my favorite meals. You'll find all sorts of, especially Asian food, and a lot of local Hawaiian food as well. One of the ultimate things I love to eat in Hawaii is known as poke. Hawaiian poke is basically cubes of raw fish marinated in a variety of seasonings that usually includes soy sauce and sesame oil, among many different other ingredients depending on what you order. Normally as soon as possible, after landing in Honolulu, I go straight to the nearest restaurant to grab some fresh poke. It's like candy for me, and I could eat it every single day of my life - it really is one of my favorite foods in the world. There are all sorts of different types of poke, including spicy ahi poke, shoyu poke, salmon poke, and even poke made with different kinds of seafood. One of the most common and beloved types of Hawaiian poke is made from freshly caught ahi, which is tuna. Often times poke is bought by the pound, in small plastic containers, and then eaten along with a full Hawaiian style meal, or picnic. Poke goes great with fried chicken, SPAM musubi, fried noodles, or it actually just goes great by itself, or with only a hot fresh bowl of rice. Something that is very popular these days is called a poke bowl. You basically order as much rice as you want, and then they put the raw fish right on top of the hot rice in a bowl. You can get poke bowls all over Hawaii and Honolulu, but one of the best places on the island, is a little convenience store known as Kahuku Superette. Kahuku Superette is a very average looking shop in the small town of Kahuku, on the island of Oahu. It really doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in you'll immediately see mostly beer and drinks that they are selling, and canned goods. But keep walking towards the back of the shop, and that's when you'll see the glass cabinet fridge, showcasing a beautiful display of fresh poke. There are only a few choices to choose from at Kahuku Superette, and probably the most popular is their sweet onion shoyu poke. You can order it with no rice, but I think the best way to get it is with hot white rice at the bottom, and at least a half a pound of the poke right on top. They only have takeaway, so after you order, you can either eat some right there in your car, or you can drive to the nearest beach like we did. Whatever you decide, your mouth is going to be watering as soon as you get your poke bowl. Along with poke at Kahuku Superette, they also have things like kimchi, which also goes great with rice and raw fish. So we headed to go to the nearest beach, and I was incredibly excited to start digging in. The cubes of fish were literally like butter, extremely tender and just melted in my mouth. The pieces of fish were also extremely flavorful, coated in a wonderful sauce made from lots of sesame oil, soy sauce, and those wonderful sweet onions, and also a hint of chili pepper. The poke bowl, including cold fish along with hot fresh steamed rice, is one of the world's great combinations, and it never gets old for me. After recently catching a bluefin tuna in Cape Cod, our good friend Anuvat took some time to show us how to make some spicy bluefin tuna poke with his catch. Here is the full ingredient list (scale up or down depending on taste and how much tuna you have): 2 pounds of bluefin tuna (can also use yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, blackfin tuna, etc.) 3-4 garlic cloves 1-2 scallions 1/2 white onion (or hawaiian onion) 4-5 slices of fresh ginger 1 tablespoon of sesame oil 1-2 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds 1/4 Cup of Shoyu (soy sauce) 2-3 Thai chili peppers 1/4 container of Japanese tokarashi Powder (use less if you want it to be less spicy) A couple of pinches of salt to taste Ground black pepper to taste A few pinches of sugar to taste If you like this video let us know and we will see if we can get Anuvat to show us some more recipes, including some of his Thai dishes. -

Action was a guest of RVCA at their house on the North Shore to witness the Pipeline Masters surfing competition, and he curated a little barbecue for a group of surfers as well as played a show in Honolulu. In between all the rapping, grilling, and surfing, we made it to Kahuku Superette, the finest purveyor of poke on Oahu. It was a life-changing moment for Action, and its effects are still felt nine months later. With a slight lull in touring for Mr. Wonderful, Action decided to whip up some poke of his own, as well as a vegan version with golden beets that’s so good, everyone who eats it will want to proclaim you king for the day. You'll find all sorts of, especially Asian food, and a lot of local Hawaiian food as well. One of the ultimate things I love to eat in Hawaii is known as poke. Hawaiian poke is basically cubes of raw fish marinated in a variety of seasonings that usually includes soy sauce and sesame oil, among many different other ingredients depending on what you order. How to Make Spicy Tuna Poke
After recently catching a bluefin tuna in Cape Cod, our good friend Anuvat took some time to show us how to make some spicy bluefin tuna poke with his catch. Here is the full ingredient list (scale up or down depending on taste and how much tuna you have): 2 pounds of bluefin tuna (can also use yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, blackfin tuna, etc.) 3-4 garlic cloves 1-2 scallions 1/2 white onion (or hawaiian onion) 4-5 slices of fresh ginger 1 tablespoon of sesame oil 1-2 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds 1/4 Cup of Shoyu (soy sauce) 2-3 Thai chili peppers 1/4 container of Japanese tokarashi Powder (use less if you want it to be less spicy) A couple of pinches of salt to taste Ground black pepper to taste A few pinches of sugar to taste If you like this video let us know and we will see if... -
Action Bronson’s Hawaiian Getaway
Way back in December of 2014, we took a little trip to Hawaii with Action Bronson. Action was a guest of RVCA at their house on the North Shore to witness the Pipeline Masters surfing competition, and he curated a little barbecue for a group of surfers as well as played a show in Honolulu. In between all the rapping, grilling, and surfing, we made it to Kahuku Superette, the finest purveyor of poke on Oahu. It was a life-changing moment for Action, and its effects are still felt nine months later. Poke - pokee, pokay… it’s a seafood dish that's a staple in Hawaii and it’s getting popular here in the mainland. Today, i’m going to show you 3 ways to make it - the original Shoyu, spicy poke, and kimchi poke! I’m going to go over the basics first and then build upon them to create more interesting flavors!
So how do you pronounce pokay? I’ve learned that it’s poh - kay and rhymes with OKAY! Snap me at Honeysucklebee to tell me how you say it and be sure to check out myInstagram at HoneysuckleCatering. Alright, so let’s start with our first version - the Shoyu Poke.
In a large bowl, I’m combining 1 lb of fresh ahi tuna steaks that I cut into 1 inch chunks against the grain. I always try to look for wild caught ahi tuna because it is sustainable and doesn’t have any of that unnatural stuff in farm raised fish. When choosing fish consider three of these things before consuming it raw: smell - Fresh fish should have a very light smell to almost no smell at all. Color - fresh fish should have a nice crimson color and texture - it should be firm to the touch. Be sure to ask your fishmonger if you have any questions at all!
Next, I’ll combine ¼ cups of soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tsp freshly grated ginger that I’ve pounded in my mortar and pestle, half a sweet maui onion that I’ve chopped up, 1 stalk of green onion, chopped, sea salt to taste, and a little bit of togarashi, which is japanese chili powder. If you can’t find this at the store you can always substitute with cayenne pepper. I’ll mix it lightly then let it marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving.
Wasn’t that easy? Now we’ll just use our shoyu poke and build upon it to make the spicy poke.
In small bowl, i’m adding ½ cup of mayo - i’m using this Japanese mayo called kewpie. Kewpie is a smoother, creamer mayonnaise that uses rice vinegar instead of white vinegar, like traditional mayonnaise here. Have you ever tried it? Next I’ll add in 1 tbsp of sriracha - feel free to adjust if you don’t like it too spicy. And I’ll add in 2 tsps of tobiko which is flying fish roe. I like it because it adds a poppy crunch. I’ll mix it well, then add it to the shoyu poke and give it a light toss until the fish is coated. I like to sprinkle a little bit more of the tobiko on top for extra color. I’ll let it marinate in the fridge for two hours and then enjoy!
Last but not least, our Kimchi poke. This one is quite simple and I recommend already having kimchi on hand! I’m using my shoyu poke as a base here again, and in a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1 tbsp honey and I’ll mix it well. Next, I’m taking ¼ cup of kimchi that I made and I’ll chop it into small pieces. You can find my kimchi recipe in the link below. I’ll add it to the oyster sauce mixture, along with 1 tbsp of the kimchi juice, and I’ll mix it well. Now I’ll lightly toss it with the shoyu ahi poke and let it marinate for another 2 hours and enjoy! For each of these recipes the marinating time is only two hours, not four.
Each one tastes so unique. The shoyu poke is the most simple of them all, but it really is so tasty. The spicy poke is creamy and has the perfect amount of spiciness and the tobiko gives it a little bit of texture that’s so interesting. Finally, the kimchi poke - I love kimchi so this combo was a no-brainer for me and it’s so delicious paired with rice, like a poke bowl. When I went to Maui this past summer for my honeymoon, I went to Foodland almost every day to try their pokes. They had Shoyu, spicy California Roll, Wasabi, Lemu, everything under the sun! I like to pair it with Taro chips that were so good.

There are lots of reasons to visit Hawaii, but the best reason in my opinion is to take advantage of the delicious food. You'll find all sorts of, especially Asian food, and a lot of local Hawaiian food as well. One of the ultimate things I love to eat in Hawaii is known as poke. Hawaiian poke is basically cubes of raw fish marinated in a variety of seasonings that usually includes soy sauce and sesame oil, among many different other ingredients depending on what you order.
Normally as soon as possible, after landing in Honolulu, I go straight to the nearest restaurant to grab some fresh poke. It's like candy for me, and I could eat it every single day of my life - it really is one of my favorite foods in the world. There are all sorts of different types of poke, including spicy ahi poke, shoyu poke, salmon poke, and even poke made with different kinds of seafood. One of the most common and beloved types of Hawaiian poke is made from freshly caught ahi, which is tuna.
Often times poke is bought by the pound, in small plastic containers, and then eaten along with a full Hawaiian style meal, or picnic. Poke goes great with fried chicken, SPAM musubi, fried noodles, or it actually just goes great by itself, or with only a hot fresh bowl of rice. Something that is very popular these days is called a poke bowl. You basically order as much rice as you want, and then they put the raw fish right on top of the hot rice in a bowl. You can get poke bowls all over Hawaii and Honolulu, but one of the best places on the island, is a little convenience store known as Kahuku Superette.
Kahuku Superette is a very average looking shop in the small town of Kahuku, on the island of Oahu. It really doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in you'll immediately see mostly beer and drinks that they are selling, and canned goods. But keep walking towards the back of the shop, and that's when you'll see the glass cabinet fridge, showcasing a beautiful display of fresh poke. There are only a few choices to choose from at Kahuku Superette, and probably the most popular is their sweet onion shoyu poke. You can order it with no rice, but I think the best way to get it is with hot white rice at the bottom, and at least a half a pound of the poke right on top.
They only have takeaway, so after you order, you can either eat some right there in your car, or you can drive to the nearest beach like we did. Whatever you decide, your mouth is going to be watering as soon as you get your poke bowl. Along with poke at Kahuku Superette, they also have things like kimchi, which also goes great with rice and raw fish.
So we headed to go to the nearest beach, and I was incredibly excited to start digging in. The cubes of fish were literally like butter, extremely tender and just melted in my mouth. The pieces of fish were also extremely flavorful, coated in a wonderful sauce made from lots of sesame oil, soy sauce, and those wonderful sweet onions, and also a hint of chili pepper. The poke bowl, including cold fish along with hot fresh steamed rice, is one of the world's great combinations, and it never gets old for me.

After recently catching a bluefin tuna in Cape Cod, our good friend Anuvat took some time to show us how to make some spicy bluefin tuna poke with his catch.
Here is the full ingredient list (scale up or down depending on taste and how much tuna you have):
2 pounds of bluefin tuna (can also use yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, blackfin tuna, etc.)
3-4 garlic cloves
1-2 scallions
1/2 white onion (or hawaiian onion)
4-5 slices of fresh ginger
1 tablespoon of sesame oil
1-2 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds
1/4 Cup of Shoyu (soy sauce)
2-3 Thai chili peppers
1/4 container of Japanese tokarashi Powder (use less if you want it to be less spicy)
A couple of pinches of salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
A few pinches of sugar to taste

Action was a guest of RVCA at their house on the North Shore to witness the Pipeline Masters surfing competition, and he curated a little barbecue for a group of surfers as well as played a show in Honolulu. In between all the rapping, grilling, and surfing, we made it to Kahuku Superette, the finest purveyor of poke on Oahu. It was a life-changing moment for Action, and its effects are still felt nine months later. With a slight lull in touring for Mr. Wonderful, Action decided to whip up some poke of his own, as well as a vegan version with golden beets that’s so good, everyone who eats it will want to proclaim you king for the day.
