Rethymno (regional unit)
Rethymno (Greek: Περιφερειακή ενότητα Ρεθύμνου) is one of the four regional units of Crete, Greece. Its capital is the city of Rethymno. Today its main income is tourism. The countryside is also based economically on agriculture and herding.
Administration
The regional unit Rethymno is subdivided into 5 municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox):
Prefecture
The Rethymno prefecture (Greek: Νομός Ρεθύμνου or Ρεθύμνης) was created while Crete was still an autonomous state, and was preserved after the island joined Greece in 1913. As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the Rethymno regional unit was created out of the former prefecture. The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities were reorganised, according to the table below.

Rethymnon is the capital of the homonymous prefecture (regional unit) of Crete and the seat of the metropolitan municipality of the region of Crete (Kallikratis program). From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the Municipality of Rethymnon. It shows great tourist traffic during the summer, while the more than 10,500 active students make the city particularly lively during the rest of the year. The population of the city amounts to 34,300 inhabitants (2011 census) and the municipality to 55,525 inhabitants. The wider urban area has a population of 46,879 inhabitants. It is the third largest city in Crete after Heraklion and Chania.

Rethymnon is the capital of the homonymous prefecture (regional unit) of Crete and the seat of the metropolitan municipality of the region of Crete (Kallikratis program). From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the Municipality of Rethymnon. It shows great tourist traffic during the summer, while the more than 10,500 active students make the city particularly lively during the rest of the year. The population of the city amounts to 34,300 inhabitants (2011 census) and the municipality to 55,525 inhabitants. The wider urban area has a population of 46,879 inhabitants. It is the third largest city in Crete after Heraklion and Chania.

Despite fears that the palm grove was being believed that had been completely destroyed by this fire, now there are many positive signs that P. theophrasti not only is able generally to re-generate successfully but the oldest and youngest palms of this palm forest too, have been totally re-generated until today in summer of 2011.

Rethymno (regional unit)
Rethymno (Greek: Περιφερειακή ενότητα Ρεθύμνου) is one of the four regional units of Crete, Greece. Its capital is the city of Rethymno. Today its main income is tourism. The countryside is also based economically on agriculture and herding.

Prefecture
The Rethymno prefecture (Greek: Νομός Ρεθύμνου or Ρεθύμνης) was created while Crete was still an autonomous state, and was preserved after the island joined Greece in 1913. As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the Rethymno regional unit was created out of the former prefecture. The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities were reorganised, according to the table below.
