ERRATUM : 3:00 to 3:15 - the road to Catterick was built by the German POWs not Italians.
Richmond has a unique character that compliments its surrounding natural landscapes. It is a market and parish town in North Yorkshire. You may have heard the same name in other places but this is the original Richmond. Apparently, there are said to be 56 others around the World. The Normans founded the settlement in 1071 hence its name was derived from the Norman French word ‘Riche-Mont’ meaning Strong Hill. Although a formal settlement was created in 1071, there has be evidence of much earlier historic settlements discovered in the area including Bronze age swords as well as Roman coins and pottery.

Things To Do In Yorkshire In 48 Hours (Northern England Travel Guide)
Way up north in England is Yorkshire, which has its own dialect and flag, and covers a stunningly beautiful area that is about half the size of Belgium. I am mesmerized by the scenery here, which looks like it came straight off the set of Downton Abbey (which is set in Yorkshire). It's a mix of rolling green hills and moody moors and a striking coastline, not to mention Norman castles, medieval abbeys and classic English country towns. The county is also rich in Roman and Viking heritage and can tell the history of Britain from when the Roman's arrived in 71 AD to present day. I spent two days exploring this fascinating area that is often referred to as "God's Country." Here is how.

The barn owls on the stream are Gylfie (female) & Finn (male) our resident pair, Ghost (male), and Willow (female). The tawny owls are Bomber (male) and Luna (female).
KESTRELS - MR & MRS KES
There are two resident kestrels, Mr & Mrs Kes. After a few battles for the nest boxes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apTVXftOAMk&t;=257s) - the kestrels Mr and Mrs Kes, laid six eggs in Sycamore Stump. Despite some intense battles with jackdaws (https://youtu.be/x1yDrfa2mzs) the eggs have hatched and we now have six chicks, developing quickly! They recently got their ID rings, a key part of conservation efforts (https://youtu.be/w-7HDhuCwMA), and since have all fledged from Sycamore. Keep an eye out for the fledglings on the stream, with a similar appearance to the female, but with leg rings!
BARN OWLS - FINN & GYLFIE
Barn owls Finn (male) and Gylfie (female) got together last Autumn. Finn is quite a young male and we watched some awkward first mating attempts at the start (https://youtu.be/UUUdFluA-gY_), I was very happy that they laid three eggs in May (https://youtu.be/etLPIMO8dJY) and the first (https://youtu.be/Sz84EhuWy3U) second (https://youtu.be/fuaZtK2enUA) and third egg have now hatched (https://youtu.be/IfASbJTtp0c). The third chick sadly passed away on 17/06.
BARN OWLS - GHOST & WILLOW
Barn Owls Ghost (male) and Willow (female) can be seen courting at night in the Barn Owl Tower. The Kestrel Feeding Post and Maze Wall are great locations to see lots of barn owl action in the evenings. Both have now shown interest in Sycamore nest.
If you would like to learn how to tell the barn owls apart, watch this ID video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNmSwVHlBW8
TAWNY OWLS - BOMBER & LUNA
Bomber the male tawny owl has been in the area since ~2013 and Luna the female ~2020. Watch how to tell them apart on this ID video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ0V9uVBO7w. They had four chicks last year, but unfortunately, their two eggs failed to hatch this year. Luna is unlikely to lay again this year. Watch Bomber and Luna's backstory: https://youtu.be/Fk6YZjk4jes. And watch what went wrong with Bomber and Luna's eggs this year here: https://youtu.be/RvPaEBGgFi0
TAWNY OWLS - OZZY & BONNIE
Look out for the male and female tawny owls in and around Ash Tree, Bonnie and Ozzie. Their nearby nest failed earlier this year, a grey squirrel ate through the bottom of their wild nest. Amazingly, she laid again on 28/04 and 01/05. Great news, as tawny owls usually only lay one clutch a year. Both eggs have now hatched which is fantastic, the first on 27/05 and the second on 30/05 – see the two fluffy white chicks on the stream!
STOATS
I am very happy to announce that there is a female stoat – Hazel in my garden with kits, keep a keen eye out for them as they will move extremely quickly!
You can also see four of this year’s rescue stoats (https://youtu.be/TzqV1xYmlEo), 2 male – Lucky Henry and Socks along with two females Bea and Bumble playing in Stoat Enclosure Nest.
BACKSTORY
Last year, Gylfie and Barney, her previous partner, raised a single chick in their first brood - Solo. Solo stayed in the nest until Gylfie had her second brood of three eggs. Solo, unfortunately, ended up stealing a chick: https://youtu.be/8HmTmcWW54o. Solo returned once but was chased away: https://youtu.be/-RmWMOgy9-Y. The two remaining chicks, Hans (female) and Grete (male) developed well from adorable balls of fluff to young adults. At two months old the chicks were ringed on their right legs: https://youtu.be/43xAGch_dJA. We soon caught the moment Hans experienced her first glimpse of the outside world: https://youtu.be/co10DCm9nFI.

Staithes is a seaside village in the Scarborough Borough of North Yorkshire, England. With its higgledy-piggledy cottages and winding streets, Staithes has the air of a place lost in time.

Once one of the largest fishing ports on the North East coast, this beautiful coastal hamlet is now a well-loved base for exploring Yorkshire's cliff top paths and discovering the delights of rock pooling and fossil hunting on the small sandy beach.
Formerly one of the many fishing centres in England, Staithes Yorkshire is now largely a tourist destination within the North York Moors National Park.
The name Staithes derives from Old English and means 'Landing-Place'. It has been suggested that it is so named after being the port for the nearby Seaton Hall and Hinderwell. The spelling Steeas is sometimes used to indicate the traditional local dialect pronunciation /stɪəz/.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were 80 full-time fishing boats putting out from Staithes. A hundred years later there are still a few part-time fisher men.
There is a long tradition of using the coble (a traditional fishing vessel) in Staithes.
It was reported in 1997 that the Royal Mail were encouraging the occupants of Staithes to number their houses instead of relying on names. Whilst the regular postperson had no difficulty with the narrow streets and cottages, the relief postal staff were getting confused. Royal Mail also claimed it would aid efficiency by their postal machines which automatically read the addresses.
The CBeebies (CBBC) series Old Jack's Boat, starring Bernard Cribbins, is set in and filmed in Staithes, with Old Jack's house located at 4 Cowbar Bank in the village.
The 2017 Oscar Winning film Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis features the famous cobbled streets of Staithes North Yorkshire England.
In 1745–46, Staithes' most famous resident, Captain James Cook worked in Staithes as a grocer's apprentice where he first gained his passion for the sea.
He moved to nearby Whitby where he joined the Royal Navy. William Sanderson's shop, where Cook worked, was destroyed by the sea, but parts were recovered and incorporated into "Captain Cook's Cottage".
In this 4K Virtual Walking Tour of Staithes Village we see the streets winding their way down to Staithes Beach, and all the quaint and cute houses of Staithes Fishing Village England.
I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Staithes England. It really is one of the best, cutest and most cinematic UK seaside towns.
So if you're looking for a relaxing day out, or maybe a holiday in a picturesque fishing village atmosphere head for Staithes UK

Be guided around Harrogate on your device as you walk - or - sit at home (or anywhere else!) and enjoy a tour around Harrogate!
This film, using maps as well as archive material, takes you on two tours around the town.
The first is a visit to High Harrogate - the original Harrogate where visitors came to the Tewit Well (the first well founded in 1571) and St John's Well.
The second part starts at the Cenotaph right in the centre of the town and takes in the Royal Pump Room and the Valley Gardens, before heading into the town centre and looking at the attractions there.
Filmed 2019- 2020 you actually walk the streets and often see behind the scenes to create a unique visit to the town like no other.
It has a full commentary explaining what you see and some fun facts!
