Jagannath Temple - Ratha Yatra ( Chariot Festival ) - Puri , Orissa , India .
The Jagannath Temple in Puri is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Jagannath and located on the eastern coast of India, at Puri in the state of Orissa. The name Jagannath comes from the word Jagat-Nath which means 'Lord of the World' (Jagat = world, Nath = Master/protector).
A Ratha-Yatra or Roth Jatra or Chariot Festival is a Hindu festival that involves transporting deities on a chariot (called a ratha or roth). Accidents involving people being crushed under the wheels of the chariot have a few times occurred, and a figurative reference to a chariot containing Lord Jagannath has resulted in the English word juggernaut to refer to an unstoppable force.
"Ratha" (ରଥ) in Oriya means chariot and "yatra" (ଯାତ୍ରା) means journey. The festival thus refers to the annual journey of the divinity in the form of idols to their aunt's (ମାଉସୀ) house. "Aunt" here refers to the feminine creative aspect of divinity.
The city is all set to witness the 139th edition of Lord Jagannath's rath yatra amidst tight security being pressed into service for the annual event. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has revealed the deep secret behind Ratha-yatra. Sri Jagannath Mandira is like Dvaraka, or Kuruksetra, and Gundicha Mandira represents Vrndavana. Upon Sri Krsna's departure from Vraja, all Vrajavasis become completely aggrieved in separation from Him.After many years, the Vrajavasis were reunited with Sri Krsna in Kuruksetra, but still, seeing Sri Krsna there in royal attire and atmosphere, their hearts did not feel the same wonderful joy they used to feel when meeting with Him in His attire of a cowherd boy in Vrndavana. During their reunion in Kuruksetra, Srimati Radharani, topmost among all gopis, said, "O Krsna, our mind is Vrndavana, where Your most sweet, love - filled pastimes took place with us."Deeply moved by the bhavas of Sri Radhaji, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu manifested these bhavas at the time of Ratha-yatra.

Ratha Yatra is a major Hindu festival associated with Lord Jagannath (avatar of Lord Vishnu) held at Puri in India during the months of June or July.
The Puri Rath Yatra is world famous and attracts more then one million pilgrims every year, not only from India but also from the different parts of the world. Rath Yatra in other words the Chariot Festival is the only day when devotees who are not allowed into the temple can get a chance to see the deities. This festival is a symbol of equality and integration.
The 3 deities, Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra are worshipped within the temple, on this festival they are taken to the streets of Puri so that everyone can have the fortune to see them. The 3 deities make an annual journey to their aunt's temple (Gundicha Temple), 2 km away from Lord Jagannath temple.

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Jagannath and located on the eastern coast of India, at Puri in the state of Orissa. The name Jagannath comes from the word Jagat-Nath which means 'Lord of the World' (Jagat = world, Nath = Master/protector).
A Ratha-Yatra or Roth Jatra or Chariot Festival is a Hindu festival that involves transporting deities on a chariot (called a ratha or roth). Accidents involving people being crushed under the wheels of the chariot have a few times occurred, and a figurative reference to a chariot containing Lord Jagannath has resulted in the English word juggernaut to refer to an unstoppable force.
"Ratha" (ରଥ) in Oriya means chariot and "yatra" (ଯାତ୍ରା) means journey. The festival thus refers to the annual journey of the divinity in the form of idols to their aunt's (ମାଉସୀ) house. "Aunt" here refers to the feminine creative aspect of divinity.

It was impossible for her even to get into a rath (small covered bullock carriage) but I somehow managed with the help of two women ... But we had only gone around 2 kos (2.25miles) from Gurgaon towards Karnal when a crowd of gujjars surrounded our rath and wanted to loot us ...
