The Kali Gandaki or Gandaki River (also known as the Narayani in southern Nepal and the Gandak in India) is one of the major rivers of Nepal and a left bank tributary of the Ganges in India. It is also called Krishna Gandaki in Nepal. In Nepal the river is notable for its deep gorge through the Himalayas and its enormous hydroelectric potential. It has a total catchment area of 46,300 square kilometers (17,900 sq mi), most of it in Nepal. The basin also contains three of the world's 14 mountains over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft), Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna I. Dhaulagiri is the highest point of the Gandaki basin. It lies between the similar Kosi system to the east and the Karnali (Ghaghara) system to the west.
The Kali Gandaki river source is at the border with Tibet at an elevation of 6,268 metres (20,564 ft) at the Nhubine Himal Glacier in the Mustang region of Nepal.
The headwaters stream on some maps is named the Chhuama Khola and then, nearing Lo Manthang, the Nhichung Khola or Choro Khola. The Kali Gandaki then flows southwest (with the name of Mustang Khola on old, outdated maps) through a sheer-sided, deep canyon before widening at the steel footbridge at Chele, where part of its flow funnels through a rock tunnel, and from this point the now wide river is called the Kali Gandaki on all maps. In Kagbeni a major tributary named Johng Khola, Kak Khola or Krishnaa descends from Muktinath.
South Asia or Southern Asia is a term used to represent the southern region of the Asian continent, which comprises the sub-Himalayan SAARC countries and, for some authorities, adjoining countries to the west and east. Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate, which rises above sea level as Nepal and northern parts of India situated south of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. South Asia is bounded on the south by the Indian Ocean and on land (clockwise, from west) by West Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The terms "Indian subcontinent" and "South Asia" are sometimes used interchangeably.
The current territories of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka form the countries of South Asia. In addition, with deviating definitions based on often substantially different reasons, the British Indian Ocean Territory, Mauritius, and the Tibet Autonomous Region are included as well. South Asia is home to well over one fifth of the world's population, making it both the most populous and the most densely populated geographical region in the world. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation(SAARC) is an economic cooperation organisation in the region which was established in 1985 and includes all eight nations comprising South Asia.
Sonepur is a town in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the banks of the River Gandak in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar. It hosts one of the world's largest Animal Fair which starts on Kartik Poornima. Is it the Nepalese Narayani river that becomes the Gandak in India? The town is located at 25.7°N 85.1832°E at an altitude of 42 metres (137 ft). The river Gandak must have been the route of the movement of Buddha and his followers from Nepal Tarai to Magadh that is why many of the stupas and similar structures, including Ashoka pillars, are found on the banks of the river. The location of Pathar ki Maszid just opposite the meeting point of the gandak, that is southern bank of the Ganges, shows the Muslim influence of trade and commerce in medieval times. The current town...

Rafting Kali Gandaki river in Nepal with Rapidrunners. The trip was amazing, the guides sooo great to be around. Bunch of people from around the world (Latvia, Germany, UK, Korea, Russia, Canada and of course Nepal). Night sky with huge shining stars, wood fire, Khukri rum... I loved it! :-)
A 5 days rafting tour of the Kali Gandaki back between the 21st and 25th of October 1997 with Exodus Outdoors Enthusiasts. What a great bunch of guys! That was their first ever flip over (at 7:38) after two years of operation. We were just about an hour or so from the finish on our last day. It was raining heavily the day before and our guide misjudged the river. As you can see it has been easily a class 5+ rapid. I was sitting at the back left corner of the raft just next to the guide and was the last one to be thrown off the raft. It came down on top on me as you can see. I closed my eyes, holding the pedal put myself in a fetal position, and held my breath for what felt like eternity through this "washing machine" experience. When I popped up (off to the left of the camera - not seen)...

The main goal of this trip, was to walk the trail along the tourist trail around Manaslu. It is one of the most beautiful, and still not too walked tourist routes of Nepal. The trail climbs the gorge of the river of the Buri Gandaki over the pass of Larkya La, at the height of 5135 meters, and then goes down along the Marsyandi river. This region of Nepal is located on the border with Tibet, and for a long time it was closed for foreigners. The trail around Manaslu was opened only in 1992. Rather to say, conditionally open. You can only come here accompanied by a certified guide, working with foreigners. Tracking around Manaslu is not conventional pedestrian tourism, it's not what we are used too. It is a long foot walk with light baggage. It is not permitted to go on the trail without...
