A spec script, also known as a speculative screenplay, is a non-commissioned unsolicited screenplay. It is usually written by a screenwriter who hopes to have the script optioned and eventually purchased by a producer, production company, or studio.
Spec scripts which have gone on to win Academy Awards include: Thelma & Louise (sold by Callie Khouri to MGM for $500,000 in 1990); Good Will Hunting (sold by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to Miramax Films for $675,000 in 1994); and American Beauty (sold by Alan Ball to DreamWorks SKG for $250,000 in 1998).
In 1933, Preston Sturges is believed to have sold the first spec script in Hollywood history. Fox bought The Power and the Glory for $17,500 plus back-end revenue. The movie did poorly at the box office. However, in 2014 the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Spec scripts have not always held as much cachet in the business as they do now. Ernest Lehman describes how his original script for North by Northwest was unusual at that point in his career:
Max Landis (born August 3, 1985) is an American screenwriter, director, producer, and actor. He is best known for writing the films Chronicle (2012), American Ultra (2015), and Victor Frankenstein (2015), a film adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein, as well as a variety of short films including The Death and Return of Superman. He is the son of director John Landis.
Landis was born in Beverly Hills, California, the son of director John Landis and costume designer and historian Deborah Nadoolman Landis. His family is Jewish. He left Beverly Hills High School for a therapeutic boarding school in New England, but still graduated with a Beverly Hills High School diploma.
Since he started writing at 16, Landis has written 75 screenplays. He sold his first script at the age of 18, a collaboration with his father, John, on the Masters of Horror episode "Deer Woman". He would later be asked to return to the series in its second incarnation, Fear Itself, independently penning the episode "Something with Bite". He also wrote for Bluewater Productions' Back to Mysterious Island, a 2008 comic series. Landis has made cameo appearances in a number of John Landis' films, including The Stupids, Blues Brothers 2000 and Burke and Hare. In 2011 and 2012, Landis was listed among Forbes magazine's "30 Under 30" young people to watch in the entertainment industry.

"Dreams on Spec" takes an intimate look at how far people will go - and how much they will sacrifice - for the chance to pursue their dreams. This feature-length documentary delves into the lives of three aspiring Hollywood screenwriters as they pour their hearts into their spec scripts, pitch their ideas to anyone who will listen, go to meetings, hold table reads, and work at low-level day-jobs - all in the hopes of one day seeing one of their beloved creations made into a movie. These poignant portraits are intercut with wisdom from a "Greek Chorus" of superstar Hollywood creative-types like James L. Brooks, Nora Ephron, Gary Ross, and Carrie Fisher to forge a funny and compelling look at inspiration, creativity, and solitude in the movie industry.

Seinfeld epitomizes life in New York City, but its 9-season run came to an end before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks shook the Big Apple. Now, comedian Billy Domineau is imagining how Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer would have reacted to the tragedy (very, very selfishly). Domineau’s script, titled “The Twin Towers,” has gone viral online, and drawn praise from the comedy community. The story follows the foursome as they characteristically make the national tragedy all about themselves. George bumblingly attempts to congratulate a fireman, only to offend him; Elaine is actually relieved to find out a date she was planning to break up with was in the Twin Towers during the attack; and Kramer speculates about whether one of his neighbors was the terrorist leader. It’s a particularly dark s...

This is a spec script I wrote to take place after the Season 1 finale of Fear the Walking Dead. Then I found out the showrunners refuse to read spec scripts for their own show. Rather than let it go to waste, I created this. If you enjoy it, please tell a friend. You can also let me know on Twitter: https://twitter.com/bowmaninc
This past summer I was reading Entertainment Weekly about "Unbreakable", by M Night Shyamalan. It's been 15 years since the film was released, and it was ahead of it's time as far as superhero movies go. I remember seeing it in the theatre, and was completely amazed. It still packs a punch today. Anyway, I decided to create my own idea (a spec script) of what may have happened since those closing credits, and decided to focus on the relationship between David's son and Mr. Glass. Mr. Glass (played brilliantly by the always amazing Samuel L. Jackson) would reach out to the son, having failed to get David (Bruce Willis in a great performance) to play his game. This is my vision of the opening scene. Unbreakable was supposed to be a trilogy... it still can be. (Side note: I wa...
