Josh Matlow (born November 27, 1975) is a community activist and Toronto City Councillor for Ward 22, St. Paul's. He served as a school trustee representing the midtown Toronto riding of St. Paul's between 2003 and 2010 at the Toronto District School Board. On October 25, 2010, Matlow was elected to Toronto City Hall. He was re-elected in 2014 with the largest number of votes and highest plurality (86.2 percent) of any candidate running for Toronto City Council across the city.
Matlow was a co-director of Earthroots, an Ontario environmental non-governmental organization. He also worked for the Canadian Peace Alliance, organizing against the war in Iraq. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Melissa and daughter, Molly. His father, Ted Matlow, is a federally appointed judge and his mother, Elaine Mitchell, was a retired high school teacher. She died on July 6, 2015.
Matlow has written articles for several local newspapers as well as the Toronto Sun and Toronto Star. He hosted a call-in radio show on University of Toronto station CIUT, was a weekly contributor and co-host on Toronto talk-radio station AM 640 and CFRB. John Howard Tory OOnt (born May 28, 1954) is a Canadian politician, the 65th and current mayor of Toronto.
After a successful career as a lawyer, political strategist, and businessman, Tory ran as a mayoral candidate in the 2003 Toronto municipal election and lost to David Miller. Subsequently, from 2004 to 2009, he served as the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, and was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario representing the riding of Dufferin—Peel—Wellington—Grey from 2005 to 2007.
After his resignation as PC leader in 2009, Tory became a radio talkshow host on CFRB. Despite widespread speculation that he would run for mayor again in 2010, he announced in January that he would not be a candidate. He was the volunteer chair of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance from 2010 to 2014. On February 24, 2014, he registered as a candidate for the 2014 mayoral election. On October 27, 2014 John Tory was elected mayor of Toronto, defeating the incumbent mayor's brother Doug Ford and former councillor Olivia Chow.

At the July 13, 2016 City Council meeting Mayor John Tory cross-examined Councillor Josh Matlow on the Scarborough Subway vs. LRT.
Mayor Rob Ford demonstrating limited knowledge of LRT and facts surrounding his own motion during LRT vs Subway debate at council on July 17, 2013. Mayor made two errors: 1) called St. Clair an LRT (it is a streetcar, just like King, Queen, Spadina, etc), and 2) believed that "lanes will be ripped up" when the Scarborough LRT is on its own dedicated route, partially elevated, partially underground, and not sharing space with roads. Council under the leadership of Rob Ford voted to spend $1.2B more on a subway - with only 3 stops - where the LRT serves more stops, has the same top speed of 80km/h, more advantages, and is referred to by TTC CEO Andy Byford as "subway like"
Councillor Josh Matlow was first to speak in response to the report on the Toronto's financial situation and presented a motion that would have Council deal with the elephant in the room. Mayor John Tory will be the last to speak.
On October 25, 2011, Toronto's City Council voted to ban the possession, consumption, and sale of shark fin products. To understand the issue, please watch the award-winning documentary Sharkwater. While this was an important vote in and of itself, it also represented a meaningful precedent. With the exception of a handful of ideologues, councillors from across the political spectrum banded together to do what is right. The vote also reflected a growing understanding that there is very little that we do that is truly local and that the choices we make can collectively have global repercussions. The outcome of the vote and the language used by councillors in support of the ban brought me much hope. You can learn more about the importance of the vote at fortheloveoftoronto.com

Registration for the Africentric school initiated by the Toronto District School Board has been less enthusiastic than organizers would have liked. As the deadline for sign-up approaches, many wonder if the school is really wanted by the African-Canadian community and debates continues over whether it is needed at all. Discussing the issue are Grace-Edward Galabuzi, a Ryerson politics professor and proponent of the school, school board trustee Josh Matlow, who opposes the school, Toronto District School Board trustee Josh Matlow, who also opposes the school and George Whitfield, principal of an Africentric school in Akron, Ohio.
