2016 Kentucky Derby results: Nyquist pulls away late for the win
Nyquist claimed the first leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday, pulling away from Exaggerator and Gun Runner down the back stretch of the Kentucky Derby.
Nyquist is your winner of the 142nd Kentucky Derby. The 2/1 favorites coming into the race rallied down the backstretch and pulled away from Gun Runner and Exaggerator to earn the win.
Danzing Candy held the lead for the majority of the race, but faded late when Nyquist made its push to the front of the pack. Nyquist pulled away from the pack to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
It is the second Kentucky Derby win for Nyquist's owner J. Paul Reddam, who also won in 2012 with I'll Have Another.
Nyquist remains undefeated in its eight-race career and will look to pick up the second leg of the Triple Crown at the Preakness. Reddam's horse I'll Have Another never had a chance to complete the Triple Crown after suffering an injury just before the Preakness and was scratched.
The only other time in history to have back-to-back Triple Crown winners was the last time before 2015 a horse completed the feat: 1978 and 1979.
