USA 0-2 Colombia - Copa America 2016 Highlights - James Rodriguez Scores But Gets Injured

Cristian Zapata scored his first international goal, James Rodriguez added a 42nd-minute penalty kick, and Colombia beat the United States 2-0 Friday (3 June) in the opener of the Copa America. The Copa America Centenario kicked off on Friday night with the United States hosting Colombia at Levi's Stadium, the home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Colombia struck first, scoring just eight minutes into the match off a set piece. Edwin Cardona fired a corner into the box and Cristian Zapata volleyed it right into the American net. The 29-year-old defender for AC Milan scored once in 16 appearances for the Serie A squad, and the first goal of his international career gave Los Cafeteros the early advantage. The Americans had an opportunity to equalize in the 36th minute. Gyasi Zardes fed the ball to Clint Dempsey and the Seattle Sounder blasted a left-footed shot that went just wide of the post. A pivotal moment in the match came in the 40th minute. Colombia's Farid Diaz tried a cross into the box that hit the arm of defender DeAndre Yedlin. The Sunderland defender was a step inside the box and referee Roberto Garcia awarded a penalty to Colombia. Captain James Rodriguez stepped up to the spot for his side, struck a low, hard shot and goalkeeper Brad Guzan guessed the wrong way. Rodriguez had his 15th goal in 43 appearances with Colombia, and they led 2-0. Dempsey, in his 125th match for the Americans, had two terrific chances to break the clean sheet in the second half. Fifteen minutes after the break Michael Bradley took a corner that found Dempsey, but Colombia midfielder Sebastian Perez cleared the header off the line. The United States had another chance four minutes later. They were given a free kick that Dempsey curled on net, but David Ospina made a diving save to keep his clean sheet. Not everything went Colombia's way, as Rodriguez was hurt in the 68th minute. He was battling Bradley for the ball and went to ground, apparently injuring his shoulder. After being worked on for a few minutes, he returned but quickly was substituted. His side held on to defeat the Americans 2-0. The teams will both play their next matches on 7 June, with the United States facing Costa Rica at Soldier Field in Chicago and Colombia taking on Paraguay at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
