Phoenix, cunoscută în Occident ca Transsylvania-Phoenix, este o formație românească de muzică rock, înființată în 1962, la Timișoara.
Phoenix a fost deschizătoare de drumuri în muzica adresată publicului larg în România celei de a doua jumătăți a secolului XX. Membrii formației au abordat numeroase subgenuri ale rock-ului; traseul stilistic al formației a pornit de la muzică beat, evoluând spre rock psihedelic și de aici către hard rock, cu un număr de experimente de rock progresiv. În anii 1970, efectele schimbărilor politice din țară asupra vieții culturale au adus la destrămarea multor formații de gen. Între cele care au continuat prin adoptarea unui stil nou, Phoenix a avut una dintre cele mai neașteptate evoluții, dând naștere subgenului rock numit etno rock (inspirat din folclorul românesc autentic, comparabil cu celtic rock-ul inițiat de formația irlandeză Horslips cam în aceeași perioadă)

Located in the far Western part of Romania, Timisoara is the 3rd biggest city in the country and an easy drive from Brasov. I went to Timisoara to explore the city and check out what it had to offer. I only was able to spend one night, which definitely wasn't enough time, so I plan to head back in the future.
Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Many tourists to Romania tend to stick to the more popular cities like Brasov or Bucharest but I think that TImisoara deserves a spot on the best places to see in the country. It was full of grand, impressive and lovely architecture and it has quite an interesting and culturally rich history.
First mentioned in the 13th century, Timisoara was, and still is, the capital of the historic Banat region. This is a historical region covering large parts of Romania, Serbia and Hungary and you'll notice a lot of visitors from these countries when you're in Timisoara. Many of the signs have both the Hungarian and Romanian spelling of destinations and there are countless Serbian license plates around.
The things I loved most about Timisoara were the Old Town pedestrian walking area, all of the squares and the impressive Orthodox Cathedral. It was great to be able to walk around and take everything in without having to worry about cars and busses. The city center was quiet and, outside of the main square, void of any tourists.

If you're visiting Romania for more than a few days I highly recommend you check out Timisoara. It's an easy drive from Brasov and there are trains and buses available from both Brasov and Bucharest for a fair price.

This video shows me and a friend climbing the tallest structure (chimney) in Timisoara!
It is well among the tallest structures in Romania, rising to over 200 meters.
The chimney has an umbrella-like structure of metal beams at the top.
We slept in hammocks over night on the very top and admired the great gig in the sky.
The only light we had was coming from a beautiful summer Full-Moon.
Please understand that by doing this you put yourself/others in danger and legal risks!
Note: for the best experience of this clip use high brightness and turn the volume up!

Timișoara (Romanian pronunciation: [timiˈʃo̯ara] (
listen); German: Temeswar, also formerly Temeschburg or Temeschwar, Hungarian: Temesvár, Serbian: Темишвар/Temišvar, Turkish: Temeşvar) is the capital city of Timiș County, in western Romania. One of the largest Romanian cities, with a population of 303,708 inhabitants (the third most populous city in the country, as of 2011), and considered the informal capital city of the historical region of Banat, Timișoara is the main social, economic and cultural center in the western part of Romania.
Timișoara lies at an altitude of 95 m on the southeast edge of the Banat plain, part of the great Panonia plain. The rich black soil and relatively low water table make this a fertile agricultural region.
Due to the hydrography projects undertaken in the 18th century, the city no longer lies on the Timiș River, but on the Bega canal. This is a relatively active seismic area, and earthquakes up to 6 on the Richter scale have been recorded.
Timișoara was first mentioned as a place in either 1212 or 1266. The territory later to be known as Banat was conquered and annexed by the Kingdom of Hungary in 1030. Timișoara grew considerably during the reign of Charles I, who, upon his visit here in 1307, ordered the construction of a royal palace. Timișoara's importance also grew thanks to its strategic location, which facilitated control over the Banat plain. John Hunyadi established a permanent military encampment here, and moved here together with his family. In 1552, Ahmed Pasha conquered the city with a 16,000 Ottomans and transformed it into a capital city in the region. The local military commander, Stefan Losonczy, was captured and beheaded on July 27, 1552 after resisting the Ottoman invasion with just over 2,300 men.[citation needed]

Julio Iglesias (born Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva; September 23, 1943) is a Spanish singer and songwriter whose romantic image, magnetic stage presence, and expressive music made him one of the best-selling artists of all time. By the early 21st century he had sold hundreds of millions of albums in more than a dozen languages. He has sold over 300 million records worldwide in 14 languages and released 77 albums. According to Sony Music Entertainment, he is one of the top 15 best-selling music artists in history. While Iglesias rose to international prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as a performer of romantic ballads, his success has continued on as he entered new musical endeavors. He is the father of singer Enrique Iglesias.
Iglesias was born in Madrid, the eldest son of Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and María del Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat. Iglesias' father's family was from Galicia, and Iglesias' mother an Andalusian.
In the 1960s, he studied law in Madrid and was a goalkeeper for one of Real Madrid's football teams. On September 22, 1963, he was involved in a car crash, resulting in an injury to his spinal cord. He said, "I had a car accident; [a] very, very strange car accident...I lost control of the car and rolled it, resulting in what they call 'paraparexia,' which is not paraplegia. It's a compression in the [spinal] cord, in the sense of the neck...my spinal cord; and I was very, very ill for three years." His doctors thought he would never walk again; indeed, his legs were left permanently weakened, and they continued to require therapy as of late October 2010. However, slowly, he began recovering his health. To develop and increase the dexterity of his hands, he began playing guitar. When he recovered from his accident, he resumed academic studies and traveled to the United Kingdom to study the English language, first in Ramsgate, then at Bell Educational Trust's Language School in Cambridge.

Located in the far Western part of Romania, Timisoara is the 3rd biggest city in the country and an easy drive from Brasov. I went to Timisoara to explore the city and check out what it had to offer. I only was able to spend one night, which definitely wasn't enough time, so I plan to head back in the future. Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021. Hammock on huge chimney in Timisoara
DISCLAIMER!!! This video shows me and a friend climbing the tallest structure (chimney) in Timisoara! It is well among the tallest structures in Romania, rising to over 200 meters. The chimney has an umbrella-like structure of metal beams at the top. We slept in hammocks over night on the very top and admired the great gig in the sky. Phoenix, cunoscută în Occident ca Transsylvania-Phoenix, este o formație românească de muzică rock, înființată în 1962, la Timișoara.
Phoenix a fost deschizătoare de drumuri în muzica adresată publicului larg în România celei de a doua jumătăți a secolului XX. Membrii formației au abordat numeroase subgenuri ale rock-ului; traseul stilistic al formației a pornit de la muzică beat, evoluând spre rock psihedelic și de aici către hard rock, cu un număr de experimente de rock progresiv. În anii 1970, efectele schimbărilor politice din țară asupra vieții culturale au adus la destrămarea multor formații de gen. Located in the far Western part of Romania, Timisoara is the 3rd biggest city in the country and an easy drive from Brasov. I went to Timisoara to explore the city and check out what it had to offer. I only was able to spend one night, which definitely wasn't enough time, so I plan to head back in the future.
Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Many tourists to Romania tend to stick to the more popular cities like Brasov or Bucharest but I think that TImisoara deserves a spot on the best places to see in the country. It was full of grand, impressive and lovely architecture and it has quite an interesting and culturally rich history.
First mentioned in the 13th century, Timisoara was, and still is, the capital of the historic Banat region. This is a historical region covering large parts of Romania, Serbia and Hungary and you'll notice a lot of visitors from these countries when you're in Timisoara. Many of the signs have both the Hungarian and Romanian spelling of destinations and there are countless Serbian license plates around.
The things I loved most about Timisoara were the Old Town pedestrian walking area, all of the squares and the impressive Orthodox Cathedral. It was great to be able to walk around and take everything in without having to worry about cars and busses. The city center was quiet and, outside of the main square, void of any tourists.

If you're visiting Romania for more than a few days I highly recommend you check out Timisoara. It's an easy drive from Brasov and there are trains and buses available from both Brasov and Bucharest for a fair price.

This video shows me and a friend climbing the tallest structure (chimney) in Timisoara!
It is well among the tallest structures in Romania, rising to over 200 meters.
The chimney has an umbrella-like structure of metal beams at the top.
We slept in hammocks over night on the very top and admired the great gig in the sky.
The only light we had was coming from a beautiful summer Full-Moon.
Please understand that by doing this you put yourself/others in danger and legal risks!

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital with an almost circular old town that is completely surrounded by walls from the Venetian period. Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

In December 1989, Timișoara witnessed a series of mass street protests in what was to become the Romanian Revolution. On December 20, three days after bloodshed began there, Timișoara was declared the first city free of Communism in Romania.
