Musical Generative Grammars and the Music of Guillaume de Machaut
Musical Generative Grammars and the Music of Guillaume de Machaut
Music composition is an elusive activity. There are numerous techniques used to examine the compositions of composers, such as roman numeral analysis and Schenker analysis. This study assumes compositions as a somewhat random activity, yet contingent on the recent past. This assumption leads one to assume that one can analyze an individual composer's activity through transitional probabilities between the multi-dimensional properties of notation (pitch, duration, harmonic context, and several other features). By quantifying the way these multi-dimensional properties in music transition to one another, one can create something known as a context-free generative grammar. These context-free grammars are used in computer composition, but they do not have to be used exclusively in this way. This presentation explains how you can use these transitional probabilities to compare the likeness of a work to a generative grammar created from a corpus of works by a certain composer. This method alone, however, is not nearly ubiquitous, but it does give a starting place for composer identification. Thus, by using examples of Guillame de Machaut and research done on his musical grammar, one can create composer-dependent variables to then create an index of methods to increase the accuracy of composer identification in music. This presentation calls for organized indices for use in composer identification using statistical analysis of generative grammars similar to the defined methods of Guillame de Machaut.- published: 24 Apr 2014
