Matsue (松江市, Matsue-shi) is the capital city of Shimane Prefecture located in Chūgoku region of the main island of Honshu. As of August, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 207,000, following its most recent merging with the town of Higashiizumo (from Yatsuka District).
Matsue sits between Lake Shinji and Nakaumi, along the banks of the Ohashi river connecting the two. The overall population of the Lake Shinji-Nakaumi area is approx 600,000, marking Matsue as the second major city on the sea of Japan coast after Niigata. Due to the prominence of the lakes, the river and canals in the city-scape and scenery it is sometimes called the "water city" (水の都). Nearby Izumo Taisha is recognized as one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is ranked second in importance only to Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture.
The present-day castle town of Matsue was originally established by Horio Yoshiharu, lord of the Matsue clan, when he built Matsue castle and planned the surrounding Castle town over a five-year period from 1607 to 1611. Matsue continued to be the seat of power in the Sanin Region for many years.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.
Press Conference was a public-affairs television series aired in the United States in the mid-1950s.
Press Conference was similar in format and content to the long-running Meet the Press and was moderated by one of that program's creators, pioneering female journalist Martha Rountree. On the program, a current newsmaker, generally but not always a politician, was questioned by a panel of newspersons in a typical press conference format. As usually done in a traditional press conference, the subject was allowed to make an opening statement (although not all chose to do so) prior to fielding questions.
Press Conference was launched on NBC in July 1956, but that fall moved to ABC. Initially shown in prime time, the program drew only a minimal, public-affairs oriented audience running against two high-profile Sunday night variety series, The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS and The Steve Allen Show on NBC; however, its appearance helped ABC to meet the public-interest requirements imposed on U.S broadcasters by the Federal Communications Commission. Press Conference was moved to Sunday afternoon for three months in early 1957, prior to returning to prime time in April of that year under a new title, Martha Rountree's Press Conference. The program ended in July 1957.
New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count increments by one. Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner. The New Year of the Gregorian calendar, today mostly in use, falls on 1 January (New Year's Day), as was the case both in the old Roman calendar (at least after about 713 BCE) and in the Julian calendar that succeeded it. The order of months was January to December in the Old Roman calendar during the reign of King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BCE, according to Plutarch and Macrobius, and has been in continuous use since that time. Many countries, such as the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the United States, mark 1 January as a national holiday.
During the Middle Ages in western Europe, while the Julian calendar was still in use, authorities moved New Year's Day variously, depending upon locale, to one of several other days, among them: 1 March, 25 March, Easter, 1 September, and 25 December. These New Year's Day changes generally reverted to using January 1 before or during the various local adoptions of the Gregorian calendar, beginning in 1582. The change from March 25 – Lady Day, one of the four quarter days – to January 1 took place in Scotland in 1600, before the ascension of James VI of Scotland to the throne of England in 1603 and well before the formation of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. In England and Wales (and in all British dominions, including Britain's American colonies), 1751 began on March 25 and lasted 282 days, and 1752 began on January 1. For more information about the changeover from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and the effect on the dating of historical events etc., see Old Style and New Style dates.

However, Japan too was a nation of castle-builders. In its feudal days, you could find multiple castles in nearly every prefecture. Hitchhiker, Are You an Idiot? When I started this trip 2 weeks ago, this is what one viewer wrote to me. I figure a lot of people wonder what I'm doing right now, why I am doing it. In 2003, I hitchhiked from Hokkaido to Kagoshima and I am doing it again 14 years later. The reason? Well, I'm hoping you watch the next several episodes as I travel on the road across Japan. Okay, what's the reason! In 2003, I was at a crossroads and didn't know if I would return to my home country or stay in Japan. I had the option to do both, but before deciding, I decided to get to know Japan -- not just Tokyo but the whole country. After the month trip in September 2003, I learned that I simply loved it here, the people and their genuine kindness. Not everyone, but the kindness that existed to me on th...

Japan Travel: Wandering around Matsue with a Samurai Heart…Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan 【★006★Shimane Matsue】 Subscribe link:http://bit.ly/1p9Y9J1 Matsue, located between the shores of Lake Shinji (Shinjiko) and Lake Nakaumi, is known as the water city. Being the capital of Shimane Prefecture, Matsue is not only the center of commerce, but has traditionally roots. This samurai city’s places to see includes the Matsue Castle, famous for being one of the few original wooden castles still existing in Japan. The former residence of Lafcadio Hearn’s, an Irish journalist, is another popular sights. The Ohashi River divides the city into two parts. Not being a big city to explore, visitors can walk around the various sights, perhaps while enjoying wagashi, Japanese traditional sweets,...

Japan Travel: Traditional Japanese Wooden Castle at Matsue Castle, Matsue City, Shimane07 Moopon Matsue Castle (松江城), located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is one of the few original wooden castle remaining in Japan. Since the end of the feudal times, only about a dozen castles remain in Japan. Visitors will be lucky to learn this “original” castle tower has survived wars, fires, earthquakes and anti-feudal activities during the post-feudal era. Matsuejo (jo=castle) was completed in 1611 by the local lord Horio Yoshiharu. However in 1638, relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, the Matsudaira clan received this castle.
