Tourism in Libya is an industry still in its infancy but one that will gradually start growing. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, three of which are classical ruins. The Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna in Western Libya and the Greek ruins of Cyrene in the East are big tourist attractions. One of the attractions of Libya's archeological sites, is that they are not as heavily populated by tourists as are other ancient sites in North Africa and southern Europe.

Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to five thousand onlookers. Just like the country’s former explorers we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but whioch around two thousand years ago was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little known land in amazing North Africa.

We're here at the World Travel Market, a trade show taking place in London, where people can come to look for a holiday inspiration or perhaps scout for an exotic spot for a honeymoon.
There's one country you probably wouldn't expect to see being touted as a tourist destination - and that's Libya.
SOUNDBITE: man, tour guide (speaking English):
"The places where the tourists are interested in, the sites, are completely safe. I can recommend the east of Libya for anyone to come there and I can guarantee it's going to be safe even more than cities like London or New York."
But here's somewhere that's not mentioned in the tourist guide.
Bani Walid - a desert town that's remained loyal to late leader, Colonel Gaddafi, has become the scene of some of the fiercest fighting since the Libyan uprising last year. Despite reports of indiscriminate shelling and gas attacks on the local population at the hands of the Libyan army, there's been an almost total media blackout in the UK.
RT ran the story for more than a fortnight, before anyone else picked it up.
Back in London and despite Libya being showcased, it seems that Bani Walid has once again been conveniently left out of the conversation.
VOXPOP: woman (speaking English):
When I saw the stand, it was a good surprise and I came to have the feedback on the situation at the moment in Libya, and if we have so many people here at this, it means that the situation is becoming more stable and we can think for next season to do something with Libya. It's a wonderful country.
RT: What about what's happening in Bani Walid at the moment?
W: Bani Walid? What do you mean?
RT: There's been fighting in Bani Walid, do you know about that?
W: No, not at all.
RT: You haven't heard about that?
W: No.
RT: But you work for a travel company?
W: Oui
RT: And they haven't told you what's been happening in Bani Walid?
W: No, what's happened?
RT: A lot of fighting in last couple of weeks.
W: No.
We went to confront the tour operator.
RT: You're promoting tourism in Libya at the moment?
M: Yes, that's right.
RT: I saw you were speaking to some people, are you telling them what's been happening in Bani Walid at the moment?
M: No. Actually this is about travel and what will happen in the future. We do not speak about Bani Walid.
The silence on the subject is perhaps not surprising. For a tour operator trying to drum up much-needed business, the sights of bodies and homes burned to the ground are no selling points.
But what's deeply disturbing is that despite a growing body of evidence about crimes against civilians, and increasingly vocal concerns from human rights organizations the UK media and government remain resolutely silent.

We've got to sort of package this as a success. It's very important for NATO, wherever NATO intervenes, no matter what the reality is, they've got to promote it as a success. So we have this sort of spin of these countries that have been liberated, in inverted commas, a great places to go and great places to invest. And the reality for the everyday person in this country is a living hell really.

But there's also a silence here, that's echoed by the UK media - a seeming refusal to talk about what's been happening in places like Bani Walid.
The reality is that the new government is struggling to control it's militias and to bridge the deep divides that remain in the country - but none of that you'll read about in a glossy brochure.

STORYLINE
The interim government in Libya is hoping the breathtaking ruins of the ancient Roman imperial city of Leptis Magna will hold the key to a brighter economic future for the country.
Tourism, which long stagnated under former leader Moammar Gadhafi, is one lucrative industry the country could tap into to help diversify its oil-reliant economy.
Leptis Magna is one of ancient Rome's best-preserved sites.
The city, which was settled as far back as the beginning of the 1st millennium B.C., flourished under the Romans, and boasts largely unspoilt remains of a forum, baths, triumphal arch and amphitheatre.
Tourism officials hope historic ruins like those at Leptis Magna, along with hundreds of kilometres (miles) of Mediterranean coastline and dramatic desert vistas, will eventually draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
For now, the aftermath of Libya's bloody eight-month civil war, which ended with the October capture and killing of Gadhafi, is keeping visitors away.
While there has been little violence since the fall of the Gadhafi regime, the interim government has not yet asserted full authority over some of the militias that brought down the dictator.
The ancient cobblestone streets of Leptis Magna were largely deserted this week, but on Monday a group of employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross, taking a break from visiting detention centres in the country, rested in the cool shade of what remains of the basilica.
"It's a beautiful day and we are in a beautiful place, and we are very happy to be able to relax and enjoy a little bit in Libya," said one of the tourists, Soaade Messoudi.
Geographically, Malta is Libya's closest EU neighbour.

Libya (Arabic: ليبيا Lībyā), Berber: ⵍⵉⴱⵢⴰ) is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.
With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the third largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world. The largest city, Tripoli, is home to 1.7 million of Libya's 6.4 million people. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan and Cyrenaica.
In 2009 Libya had the highest HDI in Africa and the fourth highest GDP (PPP) per capita in Africa, behind Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Libya has the 10th-largest proven oil reserves of any country in the world and the 17th-highest petroleum production.
As a result of the Libyan civil war, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, which had at that time been in existence for 34 years, collapsed and Libya entered a period of governance by a transitional administration called the National Transitional Council. The NTC has stated its intention to oversee the first phase of a transition to constitutional democracy, after which it claims it will dissolve in favor of a representative legislature.

Tourism in Libya is an industry still in its infancy but one that will gradually start growing. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, three of which are classical ruins. The Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna in Western Libya and the Greek ruins of Cyrene in the East are big tourist attractions. One of the attractions of Libya's archeological sites, is that they are not as heavily populated by tourists as are other ancient sites in North Africa and southern Europe. Just like the country’s former explorers we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but whioch around two thousand years ago was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little known land in amazing North Africa.

Bani Walid - a desert town that's remained loyal to late leader, Colonel Gaddafi, has become the scene of some of the fiercest fighting since the Libyan uprising last year. Despite reports of indiscriminate shelling and gas attacks on the local population at the hands of the Libyan army, there's been an almost total media blackout in the UK.
RT ran the story for more than a fortnight, before anyone else picked it up.
Back in London and despite Libya being showcased, it seems that Bani Walid has once again been conveniently left out of the conversation.
VOXPOP: woman (speaking English):
When I saw the stand, it was a good surprise and I came to have the feedback on the situation at the moment in Libya, and if we have so many people here at this, it means that the situation is becoming more stable and we can think for next season to do something with Libya. It's a wonderful country.
RT: What about what's happening in Bani Walid at the moment?
W: Bani Walid? What do you mean?
RT: There's been fighting in Bani Walid, do you know about that?
W: No, not at all.
RT: You haven't heard about that?
W: No.
RT: But you work for a travel company?
W: Oui
RT: And they haven't told you what's been happening in Bani Walid?
W: No, what's happened?
RT: A lot of fighting in last couple of weeks.
W: No.
We went to confront the tour operator.
RT: You're promoting tourism in Libya at the moment?
M: Yes, that's right.
RT: I saw you were speaking to some people, are you telling them what's been happening in Bani Walid at the moment?
M: No. Actually this is about travel and what will happen in the future. We do not speak about Bani Walid.
The silence on the subject is perhaps not surprising. For a tour operator trying to drum up much-needed business, the sights of bodies and homes burned to the ground are no selling points.
But what's deeply disturbing is that despite a growing body of evidence about crimes against civilians, and increasingly vocal concerns from human rights organizations the UK media and government remain resolutely silent.
SOUNDBITE: Neil Clarke, journalist (speaking English):
We've got to sort of package this as a success. It's very important for NATO, wherever NATO intervenes, no matter what the reality is, they've got to promote it as a success. So we have this sort of spin of these countries that have been liberated, in inverted commas, a great places to go and great places to invest. And the reality for the everyday person in this country is a living hell really.

Pick up one of the travel information packs here and you'll be given reasons to visit Libya - and undoubtedly there are many.
But there's also a silence here, that's echoed by the UK media - a seeming refusal to talk about what's been happening in places like Bani Walid.
The reality is that the new government is struggling to control it's militias and to bridge the deep divides that remain in the country - but none of that you'll read about in a glossy brochure.

But there's also a silence here, that's echoed by the UK media - a seeming refusal to talk about what's been happening in places like Bani Walid.
The reality is that the new government is struggling to control it's militias and to bridge the deep divides that remain in the country - but none of that you'll read about in a glossy brochure.

STORYLINE
The interim government in Libya is hoping the breathtaking ruins of the ancient Roman imperial city of Leptis Magna will hold the key to a brighter economic future for the country.
Tourism, which long stagnated under former leader Moammar Gadhafi, is one lucrative industry the country could tap into to help diversify its oil-reliant economy.
Leptis Magna is one of ancient Rome's best-preserved sites.
The city, which was settled as far back as the beginning of the 1st millennium B.C., flourished under the Romans, and boasts largely unspoilt remains of a forum, baths, triumphal arch and amphitheatre.
Tourism officials hope historic ruins like those at Leptis Magna, along with hundreds of kilometres (miles) of Mediterranean coastline and dramatic desert vistas, will eventually draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
For now, the aftermath of Libya's bloody eight-month civil war, which ended with the October capture and killing of Gadhafi, is keeping visitors away.
While there has been little violence since the fall of the Gadhafi regime, the interim government has not yet asserted full authority over some of the militias that brought down the dictator.
The ancient cobblestone streets of Leptis Magna were largely deserted this week, but on Monday a group of employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross, taking a break from visiting detention centres in the country, rested in the cool shade of what remains of the basilica.
"It's a beautiful day and we are in a beautiful place, and we are very happy to be able to relax and enjoy a little bit in Libya," said one of the tourists, Soaade Messoudi.
Geographically, Malta is Libya's closest EU neighbour.

UAE fighter jets with help from Egypt carried out airstrikes in Libya a week ago amid an ongoing power struggle in the country in the wake of Muammar Qaddafi’s ouster, a senior U.S. official confirms to Fox News.
The Pentagon is not commenting on the matter and AFRICOM said the strikes – which hit targets in the Libyan capital of Tripoli -- were not carried out by U.S. aircraft.
Four senior American officials who spoke to the New York Times said Egypt and the United Arab Emirates -- both allies -- executed the military maneuvers without informing the Obama administration beforehand.
The first wave of airstrikes hit positions in Tripoli controlled by Islamist-friendly militias, including a small weapons depot. The second wave targeted rocket launchers and military vehicles owned by militias, the New York Times reports.
The Islamist forces have been given weapons and support from Qatar, officials told the newspaper.
But the strikes didn’t appear to hold them back. A day after the militants were hit, Tripoli’s airport fell to the Islamists.
The U.A.E. has not commented on the airstrikes but American officials told the New York Times that Egypt provided bases for their planes to conduct the operations.
Meanwhile, Libya's past, Islamist-dominated parliament reconvened Monday and voted to disband the country's current interim government, defying voters who elected its opponents to take over.

Search and rescue operations by Libya’s coast guard are restricted due to diminishing resources, and have to contend with dangerous gangs of armed traffickers.
Those rescued at sea by the coast guard are brought to detention centers, where they face deplorable conditions and are forced to remain for long periods of time. In some instances, migrants are detained by militias in unofficial prisons outside of government control.
In part one of a three part series, VICE News is given access to chilling footage filmed by the Libyan coast guard, who have witnessed an influx of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, recovering hundreds of bodies of those who’ve drowned on their journey to Europe.

Safra, also called Sefra, is an aromatic semolina dessert from the once thriving Jewish Community of Tripoli, Libya. Rome's cuisine benefitted when the Libyan Jews found refuge in Italy in 1967. Take a tour of Archaeological Site of Sabratha in Sabratha, Libya -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
In the northwestern corner of Libya, is a fascinating piece of Mediterranean antiquity known as Sabratha.
The city has been here since at least 500 BC, when the Phoenicians likely founded it.
In the second and third centuries AD, the Roman Empire reached Sabratha and began to reconstruct the city in their image with their technology.
The ruins here contain buildings and features from both the Romans and the Phoenicians, as well as other nearby cultures.
One of the most amazing structures in the city is the ancient Roman theater, which is still fairly intact.
Sabratha was linked to two other nearby cities, creating an important triple city system in the ancient world.
