Sweet potatoes are one of my favourite vegetables - they are so packed with nutrients and are delicious! They are so tasty that you don't really need to put much with them to make an awesome meal. These are simple vegan snacking ideas that I use sweet potatoes for, they are all simple and taste great so I hope you like them.

Hi folks. Here's a look at how easy it is to grow your own Sweet Potato slips then plant them out into a container or a prepared garden bed. I've included a look at a few different ways to grow slips from "seed" potatoes to help you out.
Have planted these into a Root Pouch & will be growing the vines up a trellis. Hopefully they will grow well enough through our cool season that we'll get a few small harvests of greens.
Below is a link to Gardenate's climate selection page. Just select your climatic zone & it will give you a rough idea when particular varieties are ready to be sown/planted out in your area.

Here is what you'll need!
Ingredients:
2 large sweet potatoes
Water (for soaking)
2 Tbsp. corn starch
1 Tbsp. olive oil (or vegetable oil)
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp brown sugar
Salt (to taste)
Shredded parmesan (optional)
Chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Directions:
Rinse and peel sweet potatoes. To cut into fries, cut a small sliver off the edge of the potatoes lengthwise to create a flat side for them to rest on. Turn the potato over to lay on its flat side. Then cut lengthwise into 4-5 long slices (or 1/4-3/8 inch slices). Cut each slice lengthwise into 3-4 fries (1/4-3/8 inch).
Place the fries in a bowl of water and soak for 1 hour. (This helps remove excess starch from the potatoes so your fries will be crispier.)
Preheat the oven to 425°F / 220°C.
Rinse and dry off. In a large bowl or gallon bag, toss the fries with cornstarch until they’re evenly coated. Then add the oil and toss to coat. Add the pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and brown sugar and toss to evenly distribute your spices. (Hold off on adding the salt until after baking. This will help make sure the fries are crispy.)
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Lay out the french fries, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. (You may need two pans, depending on how large your pans are. Avoid overcrowding one pan or your fries may not crisp up.)
Bake for 15 minutes. Flip fries with tongs, then bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Sprinkle on salt (to taste) and serve! Add shredded parmesan and chopped parsley for an optional garnish. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!

The reason "yams" and sweet potatoes taste the same to Americans is because they are the same. What producers and grocery stores in the US have been calling "yams" are actually sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas).
Real yams (of the genus Diascorea) are not grown commercially in the United States. You probably have to visit an international grocery store to find them. Check out the video above to see what a real yam looks like and learn how its name became attached to an entirely different vegetable.

Learn how to make these awesome savory oven-baked sweet potato fries! Lightly seasoned with just a hint of natural sweetness and roasted to perfection, these are simply delicious! A nice change from the normal deep fried french fries.
What you'll need:
2 medium-large sweet potatoes
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp oil (vegetable, canola, peanut, flaxseed or ghee)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika
salt and black pepper to taste
Peel potatoes and cut into 1/2" square sticks resembling fries. Place into a large ziptop bag and add cornstarch. Add in cornstarch and toss to coat evenly. Add in oil, garlic powder, salt and black pepper and toss to coat evenly. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil and space evenly apart. Baked in a preheated 425*F oven for 20 minutes, turn over and bake another 10-15 minutes. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy! Makes 2-3 servings. Enjoy!

The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Its large, starchy, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots are an important root vegetable. The young leaves and shoots are sometimes eaten as greens. Of the approximately 50 genera and more than 1,000 species of Convolvulaceae, I. batatas is the only crop plant of major importance—some others are used locally, but many are actually poisonous. The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato (Solanum tuberosum).
Although the soft, orange sweet potato is often mislabeled a yam in parts of North America, the sweet potato is botanically very distinct from a genuine yam, which is native to Africa and Asia and belongs to the monocot family Dioscoreaceae. To prevent confusion, the United States Department of Agriculture requires sweet potatoes labeled as "yams" to be labeled also as "sweet potatoes".
The genus Ipomoea that contains the sweet potato also includes several garden flowers called morning glories, though that term is not usually extended to Ipomoea batatas. Some cultivars of Ipomoea batatas are grown as ornamental plants; the name "tuberous morning glory" may be used in a horticultural context.

Learn how to make these awesome savory oven-baked sweet potato fries! Lightly seasoned with just a hint of natural sweetness and roasted to perfection, these are simply delicious! A nice change from the normal deep fried french fries. What you'll need: 2 medium-large sweet potatoes 2 Tbsp cornstarch 2 Tbsp oil (vegetable, canola, peanut, flaxseed or ghee) 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp paprika salt and black pepper to taste Peel potatoes and cut into 1/2" square sticks resembling fries. Place into a large ziptop bag and add cornstarch. Add in cornstarch and toss to coat evenly. Add in oil, garlic powder, salt and black pepper and toss to coat evenly. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil and space evenly apart. Baked in a preheated 425*F oven for 20 minutes, turn over and bake another 10-15 minutes. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy! Makes 2-3 servings. Enjoy! Growing Sweet Potato Slips for Containers & Beds
Hi folks. Here's a look at how easy it is to grow your own Sweet Potato slips then plant them out into a container or a prepared garden bed. I've included a look at a few different ways to grow slips from "seed" potatoes to help you out. Have planted these into a Root Pouch & will be growing the vines up a trellis. Hopefully they will grow well enough through our cool season that we'll get a few small harvests of greens. Below is a link to Gardenate's climate selection page. Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Here is what you'll need! Ingredients: 2 large sweet potatoes Water (for soaking) 2 Tbsp. corn starch 1 Tbsp. olive oil (or vegetable oil) 1/2 tsp pepper 1/2 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp brown sugar Salt (to taste) Shredded parmesan (optional) Chopped fresh parsley (optional) Directions: Rinse and peel sweet potatoes. To cut into fries, cut a small sliver off the edge of the potatoes lengthwise to create a flat side for them to rest on. Turn the potato over to lay on its flat side. Then cut lengthwise into 4-5 long slices (or 1/4-3/8 inch slices). Cut each slice lengthwise into 3-4 fries (1/4-3/8 inch). Place the fries in a bowl of water and soak for 1 hour. (This helps remove excess starch from the potatoes so your fries will be crispier.) Preheat the oven to 425°F /... -

In one of my What I Ate Wednesday videos, I presented these sweet potato flatbreads with mashed avocados as what I ate for breakfast on that day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CoKinIJyDM). I have had quite a few requests for the recipe since then. So, I thought I'd share the recipe; it is such an easy one with just two ingredients. Who doesn't like a two-ingredient recipe?! One important procedure in this recipe is to use the sweet potato while it is hot. The heat makes a much softer roti. By the way, white sweet potatoes would also work well in this recipe although the dough may require a tablespoon of water added in as white sweet potatoes tend to be a little drier than the orange ones. Hi folks. Here's a look at how easy it is to grow your own Sweet Potato slips then plant them out into a container or a prepared garden bed. I've included a look at a few different ways to grow slips from "seed" potatoes to help you out.
Have planted these into a Root Pouch & will be growing the vines up a trellis. Hopefully they will grow well enough through our cool season that we'll get a few small harvests of greens.
Below is a link to Gardenate's climate selection page. Just select your climatic zone & it will give you a rough idea when particular varieties are ready to be sown/planted out in your area.

1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp brown sugar
Salt (to taste)
Shredded parmesan (optional)
Chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Directions:
Rinse and peel sweet potatoes. To cut into fries, cut a small sliver off the edge of the potatoes lengthwise to create a flat side for them to rest on. Turn the potato over to lay on its flat side. Then cut lengthwise into 4-5 long slices (or 1/4-3/8 inch slices). Cut each slice lengthwise into 3-4 fries (1/4-3/8 inch).
Place the fries in a bowl of water and soak for 1 hour. (This helps remove excess starch from the potatoes so your fries will be crispier.)
Preheat the oven to 425°F / 220°C.
Rinse and dry off. In a large bowl or gallon bag, toss the fries with cornstarch until they’re evenly coated. Then add the oil and toss to coat. Add the pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and brown sugar and toss to evenly distribute your spices. (Hold off on adding the salt until after baking. This will help make sure the fries are crispy.)
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Lay out the french fries, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. (You may need two pans, depending on how large your pans are. Avoid overcrowding one pan or your fries may not crisp up.)
Bake for 15 minutes. Flip fries with tongs, then bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Sprinkle on salt (to taste) and serve! Add shredded parmesan and chopped parsley for an optional garnish. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!

The reason "yams" and sweet potatoes taste the same to Americans is because they are the same. What producers and grocery stores in the US have been calling "yams" are actually sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas).
Real yams (of the genus Diascorea) are not grown commercially in the United States. You probably have to visit an international grocery store to find them. Check out the video above to see what a real yam looks like and learn how its name became attached to an entirely different vegetable.

Learn how to make these awesome savory oven-baked sweet potato fries! Lightly seasoned with just a hint of natural sweetness and roasted to perfection, these are simply delicious! A nice change from the normal deep fried french fries.
What you'll need:
2 medium-large sweet potatoes
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp oil (vegetable, canola, peanut, flaxseed or ghee)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika
salt and black pepper to taste
Peel potatoes and cut into 1/2" square sticks resembling fries. Place into a large ziptop bag and add cornstarch. Add in cornstarch and toss to coat evenly. Add in oil, garlic powder, salt and black pepper and toss to coat evenly. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil and space evenly apart. Baked in a preheated 425*F oven for 20 minutes, turn over and bake another 10-15 minutes. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy! Makes 2-3 servings. Enjoy!

Sweet potato wedges
Ingredients
4 potatoes, cut into wedges
flaxseed oil
1 heaped tsp paprika
Method
Preheat oven to 200C
Cut the sweet potato into quarters. Place the sweet potatoes into a roasting tray along with the oil, paprika and then shake until all combined.
Pour out into a roasting tray and bake for 35-40mins or until golden and baked through.
Serve up with a dollop of ketchup, salsa or vegan mayo.

In one of my What I Ate Wednesday videos, I presented these sweet potato flatbreads with mashed avocados as what I ate for breakfast on that day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CoKinIJyDM). I have had quite a few requests for the recipe since then. So, I thought I'd share the recipe; it is such an easy one with just two ingredients. Who doesn't like a two-ingredient recipe?! One important procedure in this recipe is to use the sweet potato while it is hot. The heat makes a much softer roti.
By the way, white sweet potatoes would also work well in this recipe although the dough may require a tablespoon of water added in as white sweet potatoes tend to be a little drier than the orange ones.
These sweet potato rotis also keep well in an airtight container for the next day. Reheating them on a tawa or skillet brings their softness back. They go well with sweet as well as savoury fillings. I do suggest you pair them with some spicy curry as their subtle sweetness makes a palatable contrast.

Concerning Gluten-Free options:
I have experimented with a store-bought gluten-free flour blend but it didn't work well. It had a blend of rice flour, tapioca flour, cornstarch and some gum. Some people have tried with chickpea flour+millet mix and they said they obtained some decent results although they had to do smaller ones because they were a bit more tricky to handle.
Other people have tried with coconut flour and reported that the rotis turned out good enough although they had to keep flouring them when rolling them out.
I suggest if you using one of these gluten-free flours/mix, you try roll then out in between 2 sheets of parchment or wax paper.
I haven't made these with any other gluten-free flour for myself but if I do find a gluten-free blend that works, I will update this.

I have experimented with a store-bought gluten-free flour blend but it didn't work well. It had a blend of rice flour, tapioca flour, cornstarch and some gum. Some people have tried with chickpea flour+millet mix and they said they obtained some decent results although they had to do smaller ones because they were a bit more tricky to handle.
Other people have tried with coconut flour and reported that the rotis turned out good enough although they had to keep flouring them when rolling them out.
I suggest if you using one of these gluten-free flours/mix, you try roll then out in between 2 sheets of parchment or wax paper.
I haven't made these with any other gluten-free flour for myself but if I do find a gluten-free blend that works, I will update this.

I like to take these babies and smoosh as much flavours into them as possible. Getting that crispy crunch is so perfect it brings a tear to my eye, (or maybe that was the chili!). Here is a great recipe for baking the perfect sweet potato. How to: Bake a Perfect Sweet Potato Recipe
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
2. Line cookie sheet with tin foil
3. Scrub sweet potato under running water and dry well with paper towel, this prevents it from steaming rather than properly baking
4. Poke all over with fork, get out some aggressions!
5. Place sweet potatoes on cookie sheet and put in oven for 30 minutes
6. Flip over and set timer for 30 more minutes (until they have soft centers), 20 minutes if they are smaller (shorter than your palm) Remove and scrape off any blackened crusties from the leaking juices (see picture)
7. Let them cool a bit and cut them into portions
8. Place them in a container in the fridge so you can have some delicious goodness whenever you want
9. I highly recommend slathering them with coconut butter and sprinkling with cinnamon

4. In this add sweet potato and sauté it, let it fry for 3 minutes.
5. Serve this hot with chapatti, naan or rice.
