Accusations fly both ways on Bolt Report

Bronwyn Bishop made the shock claim that Bolt knew about her resignation before she did, after Andrew Bolt pressed her during an interview on his programme.

Conservative columnist Andrew Bolt knew Bronwyn Bishop was going to resign before she had spoken to Tony Abbott and accepted her fate, the former Speaker has claimed.

I think you knew [Andrew]. In fact, I know you knew the morning I resigned before I knew I was going to resign.

Mrs Bishop gave the rare insight into her removal as Speaker from her point of view during a heated appearance on Bolt's show on Sky News on Tuesday evening.

Bolt accused Mrs Bishop of "betraying" Mr Abbott and repeatedly demanded an explanation as to why she turned on the former prime minister to support Malcolm Turnbull in last year's leadership coup.

Under cross-examination, in which she repeatedly attempted to move the interview on to more comfortable terrain, Mrs Bishop indicated she had had the support of some Liberals to ride out the "choppergate" scandal without quitting.

"I was prepared to stand my ground and face the Parliament and there were many others in the party who were prepared to do so too. That didn't happen," she said.

"Indeed I think you knew [Andrew]. In fact, I know you knew the morning I resigned before I knew I was going to resign."

Mrs Bishop last week confirmed that Mr Abbott had asked her to resign, and that she had only decided to resign once he asked.

At 6.33am on Sunday, August 2 - hours before her resignation was announced - Bolt blogged: "Bronwyn Bishop will resign very soon. This cannot go on."

At 5.55pm, he updated: "Two weeks too late, but at least it is done. This should force Tony Abbott to reassess his media advice or his willingness to accept it."

Bolt had called on Mrs Bishop to resign as early as July 17, just over a fortnight before Mr Abbott accepted that she had to go to stem the month-long scandal over her use of $5000 in taxpayer money to charter a helicopter from Melbourne to Geelong in November to attend a Liberal Party fundraiser.

On July 30, Bolt blogged that 'choppergate' had become a leadership issue because Mr Turnbull and deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop were publicly attacking Mrs Bishop while Mr Abbott remained loyal.

"Suddenly a problem for the government is a problem for Abbott personally, again raising the question: is he too loyal to make tough calls?" he wrote.

In April Mrs Bishop lost preselection for the safe Sydney seat she has held from more than two decades.

On Tuesday, Bolt did not respond to the allegation he knew of the resignation early but called on Mrs Bishop again to explain her "betrayal" of Mr Abbott.

Bolt: Bronwyn that's not good enough. Why did you turn against him?

Bishop: I'm afraid that's it, Andrew. Now let's get on with it

Bolt: This is the 'it', Bronwyn, you weren't hired on Sky News to cover up.

  • Since you put it that way Bronnie, 90% of the country knew you were resigning before you did.

    • Morning Hacka and Piped,
Up a bit late I see. That other 10%, would they be the rusted-ons that didn't see it coming? Are you not one of those?

    • Well yes but all any voter needs to remember is that Bronnie and Bolt are on Malcolm's team. It is why there is no LNP only the "Turnbull Coalition" and its silly presidential seal. Arp, arp!
Crikey, even the LNP is embarrassed by the LNP.

    • But only one columnist said Bishop would resign very soon and put it into print 2 hours before she actually did.

And that one columnist being one of Abbotts best mates with a lot of insider contacts to the LNP.

But it is really lovely to see the "broad church" of the LNP bursting at the seams with love and cameraderie isnt it?

No infighting, no factions, let alone factional warfare.

Its all peace , love and hard right policies in the modern LNP.

90% of the country didnt know she was resigning but close to 99% of the country hoped like hell she would just go away, such was her malignancy on the Australian political scene.

I love the smell of betrayal in the morning.

Now all we need is to have The Ride of the Valkyries as the introduction music to whenever Bishop makes an appearance and her media future is set.

    • Econorat - there's only one bad guy in this story, and it seems she's learned nothing in 12 months. It was obvious about five days into the whole saga when she dug the heels in and refused to apologise that it was all over.

Buff - he might, but then so might blind Freddie on this issue. Why doesn't she just fade into the sunset rather than reminding us of how she single handedly destroyed her career ?

    • This was Bronnies Fredo moment:

I know it was you, Andrew. You broke my heart

Kudos to Bolt for calling Bronnie out and making it very clear exactly why she was paid by Sky. Its all about dishing the Dirt Bronnie!

They don’t care about your political insights, They just want the Goss Bronnie.

They want someone, anyone to blame for Abbotts failure, anyone except Abbott Bronnie, and you will do for now!

This is just a small insight into how the Right will tear Turnbull to shreds if he loses this election. The rewriting of history will start and Abbotts 2 years of shocking Poll Numbers will disappear into the ether as the Right will claim Abbott would have won the election and it is all Turnbulls fault.

No wonder Turnbull is so desperate.

    • Regardless of what you think about choppergate, Bronwyn Bishop is only human - if Abbott wasn't willing to support her in what she probably considered her hour of need, why would she do the same for him? Perhaps if Abbott had a shred of tact or integrity when dealing with his colleagues at that point in time she would have acted differently.

On another note, I was always rather interested to see how Bolt would spin each of Abbott's slip-ups into a positive, if only to see how often he could rise to the increasingly difficult challenges that Abbott set up for him. How many other PMs would Bolt hit with the feather-duster/rose-tinted 'criticism' of being "too loyal" to take action in a scenario like this?
