Valdez /vælˈdiːz/ (Alutiiq: Suacit) is a city in Valdez-Cordova Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. According to the 2010 US Census, the population of the city is 3,976. The city is one of the most important ports in Alaska. The port of Valdez was named in 1790 after the Spanish Navy Minister Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán.
Valdez is a fishing port, both for commercial and sport fishing. Freight moves through Valdez bound for the interior of Alaska. Sightseeing of the marine life and glaciers, together with both deep-sea fishing, and heli skiing support a tourist industry in Valdez. The oil from the Trans-Alaska pipeline is loaded onto ships at the Valdez oil terminal.
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company is one of the biggest employers in town but it started to move several positions to its headquarters in Anchorage since the town council passed a resolution charging a tax to all the tankers coming into the port to be loaded with oil. This has had an impact in the population size and the economy.

There is some concern as to when and how the lake will release and downstream residents are on evacuation alert. Courtesy Vertical Solutions

Commercial oil exploration started in Prudhoe Bay area in the 1960s and the field was discovered on March 12, 1968, by Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) and Humble Oil (which later became part of Exxon), with the well Prudhoe Bay State #1.[1][3][18] ARCO was the operating partner.[19] Drilling sites for the discovery and confirmation wells were staked by geologist Marvin Mangus. BP was among the companies that had been active in the region, and BP was able to establish itself as a major player in the western part of the Prudhoe field.[1] The field was initially operated as two separate developments, the BP Western Operating Area and the ARCO Eastern Operating Area. Upon acquisition of ARCO by BP and sale of ARCO Alaska assets to Phillips Petroleum in 2000, the two operating areas were cons...

BP's Dudley Dodges Trial Specifics In Speech To Oil Industry Faithful BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley, in a speech this morning at the annual CERAweek conference in Houston, downplayed the Deepwater Horizon trial underway in New Orleans. He canceled his post-speech press conference, likely because he didn't want to be asked about the likelihood of settling with the Department of Justice. And in his speech he neglected to speak much at all about the changes that he has wrought during his 2.5 years at the helm of BP. This is too bad, because what the gathered suits at CERAweek would really like to hear from Dudley is a litany of reasons to believe that BP is back, solid, secure, safe. http://www.forbes.com/sites/christopherhelman/2013/03/06/bps-dudley-dodges-trial-specifics-in-speech-to-oil-in...
The Obama administration's announced its bank rescue plan, and it's about as comforting as the Exxon Corporation's plan to clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill. As Paul Krugman puts it, Tim Geithner's proposal is one the Bush team pondered and then rejected six months ago. He calls it "cash for trash." The economy's drowning in bad assets. Trillions of dollars worth. The Treasury wants to drive up the prices of those bad assets by tempting private investors to buy them up. Go ahead and buy -- the taxpayer will take the hit if those toxic assets turn out to be, well, toxic. Geithner's hoping all those buyers will solve the problem. After all, he says, those bad assets aren't so bad. They're just a victim of public panic. Those bundled mortgages are just undervalued they say -- hence the ...

Fog is drifting around over the cold waters of Port Valdez. First it is drifting erratically or not at all, but towards morning a westward flow sets in, pushing the cold air out towards open (and warmer) sea. Debris in the water reveals how this is also flowing back and forth. Tidewater would be an obvious source for pushing water around, but something else is responsible for the flow patterns here. water flows into the harbor, then starts flowing out ~2:30 but turns around rather abruptly once more ~4:40. If it was just tidewater driven it would only change direction every 6 hours.
On March 23, 1989 the Exxon Valdez an oil supertanker operated by Exxon left the port of Valdez headed for Long beach, CA with almost 54 million gallons of crude oil on board. Shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989, the supertanker collided with Bligh Reef, a well known navigation hazard, ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The result was catastrophic. Although the spill was radioed in shortly after the collision Exxons response was slow. In fact, there was no recovery effort for three days while Exxon searched for clean up equipment. During that time millions of gallons of oil began to spread down the coast. Days later as the clean up effort began the oil slick was no longer containable. It eventu...

Now that our Alaska Tour caravan has completed, four families decided to travel home together! Our first night was boondocking (dry camping) along the road just north of Anchorage. The following day we turned south and headed to Valdez, Alaska! The 100 mile drive into Valdez took us past numerous spectacular vistas that we had to stop at and take pictures! In Valdez we found a beautiful campground nestled amongst towering glacial & snow covered mountains! I was able to take multiple quadcopter flights to capture the beauty!
