Iowa (i/ˈaɪ.əwə/) is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River on the west, by Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska and South Dakota to the west, and Minnesota to the north.
In colonial times, Iowa was a part of French Louisiana and Spanish Louisiana; its state flag is patterned after the flag of France. After the Louisiana Purchase, settlers laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt.
In the latter half of the 20th century, Iowa's agricultural economy made the transition to a diversified economy of advanced manufacturing, processing, financial services, information technology, biotechnology, and green energy production. Iowa is the 26th most extensive in land area and the 30th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Des Moines. Iowa has been listed as one of the safest states in which to live. Its nickname is the Hawkeye State.

The Cherokee (/ˈtʃɛrəkiː/; Cherokee Ani-Yunwiya (ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯ) are a Native American tribe indigenous to the Southeastern United States (principally Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina). They speak Cherokee, an Iroquoian language. In the 19th century, historians and ethnographers recorded their oral tradition that told of the tribe having migrated south in ancient times from the Great Lakes region, where other Iroquoian-speaking peoples were.
By the 19th century, European settlers in the United States called the Cherokee one of the "Five Civilized Tribes", because they had adopted numerous cultural and technological practices of the European American settlers. The Cherokee were one of the first, if not the first, major non-European ethnic group to become U.S. citizens. Article 8 in the 1817 treaty with the Cherokee stated Cherokees may wish to become citizens of the United States. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Cherokee Nation has more than 314,000 members, the largest of the 566 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. In addition, numerous groups claiming Cherokee lineage, some of which are state-recognized, have members who are among those 819,000-plus people claiming Cherokee ancestry on the US census.

A Bag of Penny Candy Women of the 1930's -- A Collective Memoir is the second collaboration by Shari Lemke and Ann Loughlin. The recently released book contains the writings of thirty-four women, primarily from Iowa and the Midwest, who recall their childhood experiences of 1930's. Their recollections range from fun and funny to the somber moments often equated with the Great Depression. The women do not leave us in the 1930's. They provide a sequel sharing with us how their lives evolved following the Great Depression; they leave us with their wit and wisdom of lessons learned. Photos and illustrations which accompany many of the writings come from collections at the State Historical Society of Iowa. Shari Lemke provides an overview of the project, reads excerpts from A Bag of Penny...

If you love me, if you loved my mom, or if you simply love music, I ask that you read this: Many of you know that October 31st is another holiday for my family, what would have been my Mom’s 56th birthday. Before she passed away, she had the chance to pick out what music she wanted for her funeral. I was there. She turned and asked me to make a CD of some of her performances and place it “on everyone’s shelves, so they have something to remember me by.” This has been the hardest commission of my life. But I’ve finished it. This is her music, played to a slideshow of some of my favorite pictures of her. The recordings aren’t professional, but the music is. Every note that flows from her is beautiful and — although she’d balk and deny it — musically perfect. It’s selections from the Cher...

This video is about the second half of the Prairie Grove Battlefield Driving Tour. I was a little hesitant going on the gravel road at first, as you can tell from the tone in my voice. I did this on Sunday January 31, 2016 The descriptions of these stops are taken from the pamphlet that was given to me at the Visitor's Center titled "Self Guided Driving Tour of the Prairie Grove Battlefield" The Stops are as follows: Stop 8: Illinois River Ford - Northeast of this location is the main ford of the Illinois River. General Herron crossed with a small number of troops, only to be driven back by Confederate artillery fire from the ridge. Learning of a northern ford, the Federals placed Captain David Murphy's Missouri battery on Crawford's Hill to the north, and began pounding the ridge with...
