The WR450 is Yamaha's Wide-Ratio enduro motorcycle, but how does it do as a dual sport? This WR450F has been modified to include turn signals, headlight control, taillight, horn, and GPS, all while running DOT knobbies.
With all the trimmings required for both street and dirt riding, this dual sport is ready to conquer whatever trails you may encounter, and to help get you to and from there. A steering damper will help keep the wobbles down while on the highway, and helps make riding on the trail an absolute breeze. If you're having problems with rocks grabbing your front tire, consider adding a steering damper.
Properly set up suspension and a well-tuned engine give this bike plenty of power all across the powerband. However, this particular WR was tuned not to have too much off-idle power, which required higher RPM's for basic riding. This made riding in higher gears difficult in tight terrain, and required frequent downshifts into first gear to make the tighter corners. With a better engine tune and a slightly larger sprocket in back, both of these issues would be resolved.
Overall, I found the WR450 to be an excellent dual sport, and a bike that I would gladly ride to and on the trail.

Dual-sport motorcycle
A dual-sport motorcycle is a type of street-legal motorcycle that is designed for both on and off-road use. The terms all-road and dual-purpose are also used for this class of motorcycles. Dual-sports are equipped with street-legal equipment such as lights, speedometer, mirrors, horn, license plate mounting, and muffler and can, therefore, be registered and licensed.
Evolution of dual-sports
The concept of a versatile motorcycle equally at home on dirt and pavement is as old as motorcycling itself. Most roads were still unpaved when motorized bicycles first appeared around 1900. In a sense, all motorcycles at that time were dual-sports, intended to be used on dirt as well as pavement. Advertisements well into the 1920s depict motorcycles on dirt roads, raising clouds of dust. By 1940, most roads in developed countries were paved and motorcycles had become heavier and more oriented to the street. In the 1950s and 1960s British manufacturers such as Triumph and BSA offered versions of their relatively light street motorcycles with high exhaust pipes, and called them scramblers.

The WR450 is Yamaha's Wide-Ratio enduro motorcycle, but how does it do as a dual sport? This WR450F has been modified to include turn signals, headlight control, taillight, horn, and GPS, all while running DOT knobbies.
With all the trimmings required for both street and dirt riding, this dual sport is ready to conquer whatever trails you may encounter, and to help get you to and from there. A steering damper will help keep the wobbles down while on the highway, and helps make riding on the trail an absolute breeze. If you're having problems with rocks grabbing your front tire, consider adding a steering damper.
Properly set up suspension and a well-tuned engine give this bike plenty of power all across the powerband. However, this particular WR was tuned not to have too much off-idle power, which required higher RPM's for basic riding. This made riding in higher gears difficult in tight terrain, and required frequent downshifts into first gear to make the tighter corners. With a better engine tune and a slightly larger sprocket in back, both of these issues would be resolved.
Overall, I found the WR450 to be an excellent dual sport, and a bike that I would gladly ride to and on the trail.

Dual Sport Beach Blast: On 2 WR250R's and a CRF250L
In this off road adventure we take our dual sports to the beach! Had a lot of fun in the deep sandy trails, dunes and riding along the beach. Plenty of falls, fails and fun. In this off road adventure we take our dual sports to the beach! Had a lot of fun in the deep sandy trails, dunes and riding along the beach. Plenty of falls, fails and fun. The bikes got an absolute thrashing in the sand and so did I. Think I am slowly getting the hang of deep sand, maybe it is the masochist in me.
Motorcycles were 2 Yamaha WR250R's and a Honda CRF250L.
