See my blog for a full write-up, including sources of the factual overlays, music, etc. Known as "Annesley Old Church" to differentiate it from the "new" Annesley All Saints Church. A Grade1 listed building, it was placed into the care of the Kirky and District Conservation Society in 1980 to protect it from a demolition order. The Medieval building was replaced by the new All Saints Church in 1874. The old building was sadly left to decay. The area this church's ruins are located in was refferred to in the early works of Lord Byron, in particular "Hills of Annesley" and "The Dream". The first reference to a church at annesley was in 1156, when the "Tithes of Annesley Church" were given to Felley Priory. The early 12th century church would have been a simple rectangular building. The church building was altered in the 13th century to replace the aspe. A new South Aisle was built in the second half of the 14th century. A square tower was added to the west end of the church at about the same time. The church is sited only a few yards from the ruins of a large ancient mansion - Annesley Hall. Mary-Ann Chaworth (1785 - 1832) lived at the adjacent Annesley Hall and was romantically involved with the poet Lord Byron. They were first introduced in 1798 when Byron was 10 and Mary was 12 years old. In 1803 Byron met Mary Chaworth again and became infatuated with her, spending much of his Summer in her company. But it wasn't meant to be - Mary-Ann thought Byron to the a "lame, bashful, boy-lord" and married John Musters in All Saints church in 1805. Mary's marriage to John Musters deteriorated in 1813. She started writing to Byron, but he had become famous by then and was no longer interested! The ruins of the church are on the A608 Mansfield Road, just off Junction 27 of the M1 Motorway, on your Right just after passing the first roundabout (and the entrance to Sherwood Business Park). The GPS Co-Ordinates are N 53 03.943 W 001 15.058 There are four Geocaches in the immediate area.
