Faizabad range DIG V K Garg allegedly beat up and hurled abuses at a police constable late Sunday for not taking his call, a charge the IPS officer denied Monday.
Constable Zubeir Ahmed, who was attached with Faizabad Police Lines, was on duty at the DIG’s residence to attend to phone calls. He alleged that the DIG came to him around midnight and asked why he did not take his call. “I told him that the phone did not ring. Sometimes, it does not ring. He then grabbed me, hurled abuses and beat me up with a stick. He hit me so hard that the stick broke,” Ahmed, who was on duty at Garg’s residence as a temporary replacement, said.
Ahmed claimed he told IG (Lucknow Zone) A Satish Ganesh about the incident over the phone and also tried to contact DGP Javeed Ahmad but failed to do so. He said he has suffered injuries on his hands.

Garg denied Ahmed’s claim that he beat him up. “I had pressed the buzzer at my camp office as I wanted to speak to a station officer, but no one responded. When I went to check, I found Ahmed sleeping. He did not answer when I called his name, so I shook him to wake him up. I asked him why he was sleeping when it was not even midnight. That is all that happened,” he said.
He claimed Ahmed had been booked for rape in his native district Deoria in 2014 and had spent nearly a year in jail. “Ahmed was also demoted for this. Moreover, he was recently attached with Police Lines, as he failed to return from leave on time,” said Garg.
The IG, when contacted, said Ahmed had called him after midnight to inform him about the incident. “But I have not received a written complaint from him. The DIG said he only shook the constable who was sleeping.”
“Ahmed has had a controversial past, as he was arrested for rape. He was also found guilty of sexual assault in a departmental inquiry. Though he was discharged in the rape case by a court when the complainant changed her stand, he remained under suspension for nearly one-and-a-half years. Ahmed had appealed against his demotion to Faizabad SSP and DIG. The appeal was rejected around three months ago,” said Ganesh.
Ahmed, meanwhile, claimed he was implicated in the rape case, as he was on duty in Faizabad the day the alleged incident took place.
