"A Million To One" ~ Jimmy Charles & The Revelletts (recorded in 1958 - charted in 1960) Promo Records #1002 (New York City, New York) (flip side of "Hop Scotch Hop")
"A MILLION TO ONE" was originally recorded in 1958, but for whatever the reason may be, it didn't gain any popularity until 1960.
Other examples of delayed popularity includes : "THERE'S A MOON OUT TONIGHT" by The Capris, though recorded in 1958 , it didn't become popular until 1961. Another was , "RAMA LAMA DING DING" by The Edsels, recorded in 1958, but also, un-noticed until 1961 and The Mello Kings "TONIGHT, TONIGHT", though released in 1957, it made no real "noise" until 1960-61 either . In many instances, disc jockey, Art Laboe and his "OLDIES, BUT GOODIES" records albums helped to bring this popularity around. "TONIGHT, TONIGHT" , for example, was featured on volume #1 of the "Oldies But Goodies" collection, when the song suddenly became very popular.

The song first hit the charts on August 22, 1960, stayed there for 15 weeks , & peaked at #5 .
Jimmy Charles, the singer with the crying style, was born in Patterson, NJ, in 1942. Before he sang professionally, he built up quite a local reputation wailing at churches and community functions. When Charles was 16, his uncle accompanied him to New York to try his luck at the amateur talent shows held at the Apollo. Lo and behold, Charles won the renowned contest for four consecutive weeks. Charles' uncle then hooked up his warbling kin with Phil Medley, a jack-of-all-trades who was an accomplished singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger. Impressed by the lad's delivery, Medley cut a demo with Charles singing a song Medley had been trying to place entitled "A Million to One." He got the ear of Bill Lashley, a honcho at Promo Records, and played it for him. Promo liked the demo and signed the youngster to a recording contract. They redid Medley's song with the Revellettes backing the singer. The dreamy ballad ascended to number five on Billboard's Top 100 in September of 1960. Sadly, his career ended as quickly as it started. "The Age of Love," Charles' next release, stalled at the 47th position, 42 slots lower than "A Million to One." Paul Stanley
Stanley Bert Eisen (born January 20, 1952), better known by his stage name Paul Stanley, is an American musician, singer, songwriter and painter best known for being the rhythm guitarist and co-lead singer of the rock band Kiss. He is the writer or co-writer of many of the band's highest-charting hits. Stanley established the "Starchild" character for his Kiss persona.
Hit Parader ranked him 18th on their list of Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time. Gibson.com Readers Poll also named him 13th on their list of Top 25 Frontmen.
Early life
Stanley Bert Eisen was born January 20, 1952, in upper Manhattan near 211th Street and Broadway; the Inwood neighborhood near Inwood Hill Park. He was the second of two children, and born two years after his sister Julia. His mother came from a family that fled Nazi Germany to Amsterdam, Netherlands and then to New York City. His father's parents were from Poland. Stanley was raised Jewish, although he did not consider his family very observant and he was not bar mitzvahed. His parents listened to classical music and light opera; Stanley was greatly moved by Beethoven's works. His right ear was misshapen from a birth defect called microtia; he was unable to hear on that side, thus he found it difficult to determine the direction of a sound, and he could not understand speech in a noisy environment. Attending PS 98, he was taunted by other children for his deformed ear.

NOTE: Nathaniel (Nat) SHILKRET (1889 – 1982) American composer, conductor, clarinetist, pianist and light music director in Victor Records – formally, between 1926-1931, although continuing his cooperation until 1940. During his directorship he promoted editing c.50 million copies of almost all the “list of presence” of American jazz- and dance-musicians and bandleaders of that period. Multi-instrumentalist, a child prodigy from the age of five, he played with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and subsequently led various 'hot' jazz bands in the 1920's and early 30's. One of his early studio ensembles, the All Star Orchestra, included in its line-up such future luminaries as Joe Venuti, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller. His brother Jack was also a bandleader of another dance orchestra and he sometimes took over conducting one of Nat’s band, including The Virginians.
