Lauren Tom (born August 4, 1961) is an American actress and voice actress perhaps best known for her roles as Lena St Clair in The Joy Luck Club, Julie in the TV series Friends, and for providing the voices for both mother and daughter characters on two animated TV comedy series: on Futurama she voices Amy Wong and her mother Inez, and on King of the Hill she voiced Minh & Connie Souphanousinphone.
Lauren Tom was born in Chicago, Illinois, the Chinese American daughter of Nancy (née Dare) and Tom Chan, Jr. who worked in the frozen food business. In an article for Detour magazine Tom described how being teased as a child about her Chinese heritage made her introverted and is what originally inspired her to study dance.
At the age of 17, Lauren Tom landed a spot with a touring company of A Chorus Line and was cast in the Broadway production of the show less than a year later. She won an Obie Award for her Off-Broadway acting and was cast in the Broadway shows Hurlyburly and Doonesbury.
Tom had several small parts in movies including Nothing Lasts Forever, Wall Street, See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Blue Steel; but her biggest role to date was as a waitress in the Robin Williams/Tim Robbins film Cadillac Man. This role led to being a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Tom landed a starring role in the film The Joy Luck Club in 1993, which led to roles in such other films such as When a Man Loves a Woman and North.
Amy Wong, voiced by Lauren Tom, is a fictional character, one of the main characters from the Fox and Comedy Central television animated series Futurama. She works as an intern at Planet Express (supposedly kept around because she shares Professor Farnsworth's blood type). A graduate student for most of the series' run, in season six, she earns her Ph.D in Applied Physics from Mars University, earning her the title of Doctor.
When creating Amy's character Matt Groening and David X. Cohen decided that she would be something of a klutz. Groening was interested in exploring the idea of using slapstick comedy and physical humor with a female character since most of this humor was done by male characters in his previous work The Simpsons.
Amy's personality was originally much different; Lauren Tom stated that she was supposed to be "a car mechanic, really tough lesbian sort of character." However, her characteristics were changed in order to provide a better contrast with Leela's.
In the season four episode "Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch", in which Amy's boyfriend Kif becomes pregnant, there was some disagreement among the writers as to whether Amy should be the real mother of his children. It was eventually decided that making Amy the mother and having her initially reject the children would make her too unlikeable.
Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz, October 14, 1939) is an American fashion designer and business executive; best known for his Polo Ralph Lauren clothing brand.
Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx, New York, to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, from Pinsk, Belarus: Fraydl (née Kotlar) and Frank Lifshitz, a house painter.
Ralph attended the Salanter Academy Jewish Day School followed by MTA (now known as the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy), before eventually graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1957. In MTA Lauren was known by his classmates for selling ties to his fellow students. In a moment of spontaneity, when asked what he wanted to do in his Clinton yearbook he stated under his picture that he wanted to be a millionaire. During the summer, Ralph attended Camp Roosevelt (Monticello).
At the age of 16, Ralph's brother Jerry (who was his guardian) changed their last name to Lauren to avoid the unfortunate obscenity reference Lifshitz has in English (although Ralph's brother Lenny retained the name). Apparently Ralph was teased about it in school. “My given name has the word shit in it,” he told Oprah Winfrey. “When I was a kid, the other kids would make a lot of fun of me. It was a tough name. That's why I decided to change it. Then people said, "Did you change your name because you don't want to be Jewish?" I said, "Absolutely not. That's not what it's about. My cousins who lived in California had changed their last name to Lawrence. So I just thought, "I'm going to pick a nice last name"—it wasn't particularly connected to anything or anyone."
Osric Chau (Chinese: 周逸之) is an actor from Vancouver, British Columbia. Amongst other roles in Cold Squad and a lead role in a Global TV docudrama, Chau co-starred with David Carradine and Daryl Hannah as "Lang Han" in Phillip Spink's Kung Fu Killer. Chau also had a role in Nickelodeon series "The Troop" and has done stunt work for the popular game company, Electronic Arts. Chau made his first feature film debut acting in a supporting role in Roland Emmerich's, "2012". He went on to work on his first Chinese film, a remake of the 2000 hit, "What Women Want", for Asian audiences, "我知女人心“。 And in 2011, he was a part of The RZA's directorial debut in "The Man with the Iron Fist" filmed in China.
In 2000, Chau took his first martial arts class. It was a Wing Chun class where he learned theories and applications of self defense, he went on to continue studying for 8 years. Earning a gold medal in competition in 2001, he quickly became a student instructor.
In summer of 2001 Chau found a new discipline, Wushu. He studied under Zhang Zhi Bing, a master from Harbin, China. There he learned T'ai chi as well as the more traditional forms of Wushu. After four years, Sifu Zhang went back to China, and Chau enrolled in West Coast Chinese Martial Arts in Vancouver under head instructor, Bruce Fontaine. This is where he studied and excelled in Modern Wushu, a more performance orientated martial art. Chau had a natural aptitude for acrobatics, was deemed the most improved of the club in the Spring of 2006 and soon became a student instructor and a staple in the club.
