The Suriname River (Dutch: Surinamerivier) is 480 km long and flows through the country Suriname. Its sources are located in the Guiana Highlands on the border between the Wilhelmina Mountains and the Eilerts de Haan Mountains (where it is known as the Gran Rio). The river flows below the reservoir along Brokopondo, Berg en Dal, the migrant communities Klaaskreek and Nieuw-Lombé, Jodensavanne, Carolina, Ornamibo and Domburg, before reaching the capital Paramaribo on the left bank and Meerzorg on the right bank. At Nieuw-Amsterdam it is joined by the Commewijne and immediately thereafter at the sandspit Braamspunt it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The river has several sets of rapids as well as a few dams, the largest of which is the Afobaka Dam. The river's flow is interrupted by the Brokopondo Reservoir, which therefore divides the river into two sections. The upstream section runs almost entirely through the Sipaliwini district, and the downstream section runs through the Brokopondo, Para, Commewijne, Wanica and Paramaribo districts.

Suriname (/ˈsʊrᵻnæm/, /ˈsʊrᵻnɑːm/ or /ˈsʊrᵻnəm/, also spelled Surinam), officially known as the Republic of Suriname (Dutch: Republiek Suriname, Dutch pronunciation: [ˌreːpyˈblik ˌsyːriˈnaːmə]), is a sovereign state on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south. At just under 165,000 km2 (64,000 sq mi), it is the smallest country in South America. Suriname has a population of approximately 566,000, most of whom live on the country's north coast, in and around the capital and largest city, Paramaribo.
Originally inhabited by a number of indigenous tribes, Suriname was explored and contested by European powers before coming under Dutch rule in the late 17th century. In 1948 the country gained autonomy and in 1954 it became one of the constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On 25 November 1975, the country of Suriname left the Kingdom of the Netherlands to become an independent state, nonetheless maintaining close economic, diplomatic, and cultural ties to its former colonizer.
The road from Paramaribo goes as far south as Ayuni at about 40% towards the Brazilian border. Any further trip can only be done by plane or in a, long, narrow, shallow boat, called a "korjaal". In this video we make the four hour boat trip from Ayuni to Pikin Slee. We visited Suriname on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMYlw_C7EP8JSXwn1EutZtidPlM8KoY2E. Due to theft of our good camera we had to take these recordings with a much simpler one. By consequence the technical quality of this video is unfortunately substandard.
Video I made at the Suriname River deep in the Amazon Rainforest.
We stayed at a an extremely remote Maroon Village on the Suriname River. We had to drive for two hours and then take a 40' long dugout canoe up the shallow river to get there. Suriname is not as yet a highly seasoned tourism destination, such as those one can find in the wider Caribbean. Most visitors who travel from abroad to our country have close relatives living here, or were born in Suriname. However this trend has changed, rapidly during the last two decades. According to statistical data provided by the Suriname Tourism Foundation, overall tourist arrivals over the past years noted a significant increase from 60,000 visitors in 2002 to more than 150,000 visitors in 2006 and 175.000 in 2009. The number increased even more in 2010, when 205,001 visitors were registered. More and more focused initiatives have been taken to improve the tourism sector while high standards of professionalism were introduced. For example, owners of warungs, the cozy small typi...

Guyana Travel Video Guide: Guyana is now the third-smallest country in South America after Suriname and Uruguay. The name Guyana (from Arawak Wayana) means "Land of many waters." It is related to the name Uruguay: River of the colorful birds, another country in South America. Described by its own tourism association as 'Conradian' and 'raw,' Guyana is a densely forested country with a dark reputation of political instability and interethnic tension. While politics aren't making things brighter, underneath the headlines of corruption and economic mismanagement is a joyful and motivated mix of people who are trying to bring the spectacular natural attributes of this country to their full ecotourism potential. Suriname is a warm, dense convergence of rivers that thumps with the lively rhythm of ethnic diversity. From Paramaribo, the country's effervescent Dutch-colonial capital, to the fathomless jungles of the interior, you'll get a genuine welcome to this tiny country – whether from the descendants of escaped African slaves, Dutch and British colonialists, Indian, Indonesian and Chinese indentured laborers or indigenous Amerindians. Paramaribo is loaded with interesting shopping venues, party-hard night spots and exceptional restaurants, while the untamed jungle, just a few hours away by road or boat, is utterly away from modern development. It's relatively easy to get around this river-heavy, forest-dense country. The mix of languages can make communications interesting, but there is almos...

Isadou is one of the few resorts where you still have real authentic huts and where the owners are local maroons. This tour to Isadou is unique because its intent is to let the local maroons profit from the growth of tourism in this area. The way the complete staff is consigned from the cook to the guide by eager and enthusiastic maroons from nearby villages will try their utmost best to please the guests. The surrounding area of the resort, the Upper-Suriname area, is known for its unique Maroon culture and its untouched Amazon Rainforest. The Maroons, descendants of runaway slaves, have settled in the inaccessible rain forest a long time ago, where they started a new existence. By their isolated way of life, they developed a unique culture with strong African influences. The women in th...
