Sun Network COO arrested for sexual harassment
The Chief Operating
Officer of Sun Network,
Praveen Chathangathodi (49), was arrested by the
Central Crime Branch (
CCB) on Friday on charges of harassing a former female colleague, following a complaint lodged by her.
Sources with the CCB said the 38-year-old complainant had quit her job as programme head,
Chennai, with
Malayalam channel
Surya TV in May after being repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse and humiliation at the workplace by Praveen who is also in-charge of that channel.
Misuse of powers
“As the complainant refused to put up with his harassment, Praveen used his official powers and abruptly transferred her to
Kochi. She requested the transfer to be revoked stating that her child was attending school in Chennai and her mother was undergoing treatment, but he did not consider that. So, she quit,” said an investigating officer.
Chathangathodi reportedly continued to torment the woman by not clearing the final settlement, pending salary and other dues, following which she approached the city police recently, the officer added.
Remand
A CCB team probing the complaint picked up Praveen from his residence in
Anna Nagar early on Friday.
Following questioning, he was booked under various charges, including sexual harassment at the workplace, criminal breach of trust and intimidation, and arrested. He was remanded in judicial custody the same evening, sources added.
The victim began her career with the Sun Network in 2004 after she was in-charge of a radio station (owned by the network) in Kochi in which Praveen was her boss. She quit that job after a few years, and rejoined the company as programme head for Surya TV in Chennai in 2014.
