Kristine Zhenie Lobrigas Tandingan (born March 11, 1992 in Digos, Davao del Sur, Philippines), more popularly known as KZ Tandingan, is a Filipino singer who rose to fame after winning the first season of The X Factor Philippines in 2012.

Background

KZ Tandingan started singing as a child but had to stop when she was in her junior year in high school after suffering from a throat problem. Tandingan is an alumna of University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City and had graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Before she joined The X Factor Philippines, Tandingan was part of a local acoustic band.

Tandingan was considered as an early favorite after she performed a jazzy version of "Over the Rainbow" in the fourth week of the Judges' auditions. After receiving a standing ovation from all the judges', she was requested to sing again. She obliged and sang "Ready or Not" by the American rapper, Lauryn Hill. With her second song, she also showed her rapping skills. Tandingan was greatly praised by all of the judges. Nievera even shouted that, "A star is born in Digos!". The video of her audition went viral online after it was uploaded in YouTube. The video reached nearly 1 million views before it was removed due to copyright issues. During the Bootcamp stage, she sang "Mahirap Magmahal ng Syota ng Iba" by the APO Hiking Society and cried after she made the cut for the Top 20. She sang "Killing Me Softly with His Song" by Roberta Flack during the Judges' home visit. On week 9, she landed on the bottom 2 for the first time with teammate Allen Sta. Maria, but she survived elimination. She was Charice's last remaining act after Allen Sta. Maria was eliminated on week 9. She reached the grand finals on October 7, 2012 and was proclaimed the winner of The X Factor Philippines.

The X Factor

The X Factor is a television music competition franchise created by Simon Cowell. It originated in the United Kingdom, where it was devised as a replacement for Pop Idol (2001–2003). It is held in various countries. The programmes are produced by executive producer Simon Cowell and his company SYCOtv. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the undefinable "something" that makes for star quality. The prize is usually a recording contract, in addition to the publicity that appearance in the later stages of the show itself generates, not only for the winner but also for other highly ranked contestants.

The similarities between The X Factor and Idols prompted Idol creator Simon Fuller, along with 19 Entertainment, to file a lawsuit against Cowell, SYCOtv, and FremantleMedia in 2004. An out-of-court settlement was reached in 2005 allowing Fuller to gain a 10% share in The X Factor format, and preventing an American version until 2010. Fuller later filed another lawsuit in 2011, claiming that he had also been promised that he would be credited as an executive producer of The X Factor USA, but that Syco, FremantleMedia, and Fox Broadcasting Company had failed to fulfill that promise; that lawsuit is pending.

The X Factor Philippines

The X Factor Philippines was a Filipino television reality music competition, adapted from the original UK series as part of The X Factor franchise, to find new singing talent in the Philippines. The show was hosted by KC Concepcion while the judging panel consists of Charice, Gary Valenciano, Pilita Corrales, and Martin Nievera. It was the first franchise to be adapted in Southeast Asia.

KZ Tandingan was proclaimed the winner of the first season, of whom received a cash prize of 4 million pesos including a recording contract from Star Records, ABS-CBN's recording arm.

The series is part of The X Factor franchise and is based on a similar competition format in United Kingdom entitled The X Factor.

Format

Categories

The show is primarily concerned with identifying singing talent, though appearance, personality, stage presence and dance routines are also an important element of many performances. Each judge is assigned one of four categories. For season one, these categories were: "Boys" (aged 16–25 males), "Girls" (aged 16–25 females), "Over 25s" (solo acts aged 25 and over), and "Groups" (group or duo acts aged 16 and above). Some groups were formed from soloists and other groups rejected after the audition process. Through the live shows, the judges act as mentors to their category, helping to decide song choices, styling and staging, while judging contestants from other categories.
