Zak Richard Starkey (born 13 September 1965) is an English rock drummer well known for his work with the English rock band The Who, with whom he has performed and recorded since 1994, despite never having been an official member. He is also the third drummer to have appeared with English rock band Oasis. He has also worked with other musicians and bands such as Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, The Icicle Works, The Waterboys, ASAP, The Lightning Seeds and John Entwistle.
Starkey is the son of The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Maureen Starkey Tigrett, Starr's first wife.
Zak Starkey grew up at Sunny Heights at St George's Hill in Surrey and Tittenhurst Park at Sunninghill in Berkshire.
At age eight, he became interested in music when The Who's drummer Keith Moon gave him a drum kit. As a result, he knew him as "Uncle Keith". Moon was one of Ringo Starr's closest friends and Zak's godfather, and although they "never sat together at a drum kit", he did discuss drumming with the boy. The drum kit was later sold at Sotheby's for twelve thousand pounds.
Richard Starkey,MBE (born 7 July 1940), known professionally as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter and actor who gained worldwide fame as the drummer for the Beatles. He occasionally sang lead vocals, usually for one song on an album, including "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Yellow Submarine" and their cover of "Act Naturally". He also wrote the Beatles' songs "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden", and is credited as a co-writer of others, including "What Goes On" and "Flying".
Starr was twice afflicted by life-threatening illnesses during childhood, and as a result of prolonged hospitalisations fell behind in school. In 1955, he entered the workforce and briefly held a position with British Rail before securing an apprenticeship at a Liverpool equipment manufacturer. Soon afterwards, he became interested in the UK skiffle craze, developing a fervent admiration for the genre. In 1957, he cofounded his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, which earned several prestigious local bookings before the fad succumbed to American rock and roll by early 1958.

In this episode of Donn's Drum Vault, we look at the set Zak Starkey played at the Who's performance at the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics in London. The entire set is inspired by the colors of the Olympic rings, and has more raw presence than any set I've ever seen. Subscribe for more episodes! After watching The Who's sound check in Kansas City, Roger Daltrey invited Hudson on stage to play Zak Starkey's drums. Zak heard and came up to join him. It was Hudson's 10th birthday on April 29th, 2016. His only birthday wish was to see The Who one last time, so we made the trek from Austin to KC. They played one of the best shows we have ever seen. A day he will never ever forget. We are so humbled and thankful for our gracious Who family! Been a fan of his sine I first saw him drum on the 1st Quadrophenia tour. He is an incredible drummer and Pete often introduces him as being babysat by Keith Moon or being taught by Keith Moon. Nuff said there eh!
Pete Townshend shows why he is one of the greats with inspired guitar licks, classic windmill guitar strumming, and even a split leg jump to end the song 'Baba O'Reilly'! Zak Starkey's drumming certainly helps this band keep going strong and would make Keith Moon, who was Zak Starkey's godfather and bought Zak his first drum set, very proud of his performance this night in Milwaukee. The Who Hits 50! recorded live at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee, WI on March 21, 2016.
