The AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), formerly known as Fusion, is marketing term for a series of 64-bit microprocessors from AMD designed to act as a CPU and graphics accelerator (GPU) on a single chip.
AMD announced the first generation APUs, Llano for high-performance and Brazos for low-power devices in January 2011. The second-generation Trinity for high-performance and Brazos-2 for low-power devices were announced in June 2012. The third-generation Kaveri for high performance devices was launched in January 2014, while Kabini and Temash for low-power devices were announced in summer 2013.
The Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One eighth generation video game consoles both use semi-custom third-generation low-power APUs.
Although it doesn't use the name "APU", Intel Corporation produces CPU-GPU combinations like its Skylake that are architecturally very similar.
The AMD Fusion project started in 2006 with the aim of developing a system on a chip that combined a CPU with a GPU on a single die. AMD took a key step toward realising such a vision when it acquired the graphics chipset manufacturer ATI in 2006. The project reportedly required three internal iterations of the Fusion concept to create a product deemed worthy of release. Reasons contributing to the delay of the project include the technical difficulties of combining a CPU and GPU on the same die at a 45 nm process, and conflicting views on what the role of the CPU and GPU should be within the project.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is an American worldwide semiconductor company based in Sunnyvale, California, United States, that develops computer-processors and related technologies for business and consumer markets. While initially it manufactured its own processors, the company became fabless after GlobalFoundries was spun off in 2009. AMD's main products include microprocessors, motherboard chipsets, embedded processors and graphics processors for servers, workstations and personal computers, and embedded systems applications.
AMD is the second-largest supplier and only significant rival to Intel in the market for x86-based microprocessors. Since acquiring ATI in 2006, AMD and its competitor Nvidia have dominated the discrete graphics processor unit (GPU) market.
Advanced Micro Devices was formally incorporated on May 1, 1969, by Jerry Sanders, along with seven of his colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor. Sanders, an electrical engineer who was the director of marketing at Fairchild, had like many Fairchild executives grown frustrated with the increasing lack of support, opportunity, and flexibility within that company, and decided to leave to start his own semiconductor company. The previous year Robert Noyce, who had invented the first practical integrated circuit or microchip in 1959 at Fairchild, had left Fairchild together with Gordon Moore and founded the semiconductor company Intel in July 1968.
A stock exchange or bourse is an exchange where stock brokers and traders can buy and/or sell stocks (also called shares), bonds, and other securities. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issue and redemption of securities and other financial instruments, and capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Securities traded on a stock exchange include stock issued by listed companies, unit trusts, derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds. Stock exchanges often function as "continuous auction" markets, with buyers and sellers consummating transactions at a central location, such as the floor of the exchange.
To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it must be listed there. Usually, there is a central location at least for record keeping, but trade is increasingly less linked to such a physical place, as modern markets use electronic networks, which gives them advantages of increased speed and reduced cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is restricted to brokers who are members of the exchange. In recent years, various other trading venues, such as electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems and "dark pools" have taken much of the trading activity away from traditional stock exchanges.

This talk will describe research on evolving general purpose graphics processor units (GPGPU) architecture towards more irregular parallel workloads. The first part of the talk will summarize research on implementing hardware transactional memory on GPUs. The challenges will be summarized along with our proposed solution, KILO-TM. Our analysis shows KILO-TM captures 59% of the performance of fine-grained locking, while being on average 128 faster than executing all transactions serially, for an estimated hardware area overhead of 0.5% of a contemporary GPU. The second part of the talk will summarize recent efforts to port memcached to run on an existing AMD Fusion APU where we observe up to 7.5X performance increase when executing the key-value look-up handler on the integrated GPU.

For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/AFDS_2012 TM is open sourced and a ULL intended to assist developers in optimally programming parallel software on heterogeneous computing systems to achieve highest performance, throughput and utilization. Its primary function is to provide APIs for designing task based applications and implementing dynamic workload balancing across the entire heterogeneous system. TM offers popular parallelism methods in both data-parallel and task-level parallel ways. The complexities of dynamic task scheduling processes and heterogeneous hardware configurations are completely transparent to the developers. In latest TM releases, we have enabled lot of more new features like boost support, GMAC integration and TM server. Subs...
