Revised method for making black powder using military manual.
This method is the best of the cooking methods that I've used.
It is the safest fastest method to make high quality Black Powder.
You can make 1Kg in approximately 2 hours not counting the full drying time, +2-3 hr.
My new revised method uses grams.
When mixing in grams the calculations are simple.
75% KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate)= 750 grams by weight.
15% Charcoal = 150 grams by weight.
10% Sulfur = 100 grams by weight.
2 cups of water.
This weighs more than a pound and I mix it with mixer I bought at Penny's for $100. Mix cold until smooth, no lumps and creamy texture. Place in pan on stove and heat at low temp stirring until the mix gets little bubbles all through it.
I use approximately the same amount of alcohol about 40-50 oz in the finishing process.
If using metal pans as I did in this video you should touch everything before starting to discharge any static electrical charges. This is most important once the powder is nearly dry and when it is dry. When powder is dry in metal pan touch the outside of the pain away from the powder. I literally touch the box it's setting on first then touch the outside of the pan away from the powder then I go ahead with my process.
Us plastic or wooden stir implements. I know I've used metal but I shouldn't. You shouldn't use anything that might give off even the slightest spark.

Black Powder in a Glock! Sounds a little crazy, I guess. Well, John convinced me to try it, since I have lots of experience with Glocks, with reloading, and with black powder.
Warning: do not try this at home! I am a "professional gunman," so I have a license to experiment. :-)
Glock quite clearly advises NOT to shoot reloads in their pistols, NOT to shoot lead bullets in their pistols, and even though they don't address it, my guess is that they would advise against using black powder in their pistols. :-)
Guess this is more of a "Reliability" test than a real "Torture" test; however, torture tests are actually reliability tests when you get right down to it. We're testing the reliability of the pistol under the extreme condition of firing horribly dirty gun powder.
Glocks, as well as other modern hi-tech pistols are famous for functioning under extreme conditions. We thought we'd test one with the dirtiest powder one can imagine and see if it would fire a full magazine without hanging up.
You might be interested to know that after soaking the barrel in Ballistol and running a couple of patches through the barrel to get the black powder crud out, the barrel was as clean and shiny as a mirror. There was NO leading at all. I did not want to shoot more than a magazine, though, because I knew that even if there was no leading, hardened black powder residue might create the same increased pressure issues as a leaded barrel, which is what polygonal rifling is supposedly subject to causing.
The powder charge was Goex FFFF. Don't know exactly how much, just as much as I could get in and still leave room for the 230 grain bullet.

Here's the last of the "prepper" series. In previous vids, I showed you how to cast your own bullets and make your own charcoal. Here we finish with how to make your own custom black powder. We also do some burn rate tests to show how the homemade version is faster burning and superior to the commercial grade black powder. Enjoy and be safe.
NOTE: Good point made in the comments that should be noted: Faster burn rates don't necessarily equate to better powder. It all depends on the application. Certain BP weapons require slower burn rates. Always make sure you match the powder with the proper application intended.

Gunpowder, also known since the late 19th century as black powder, was the first chemical explosive and the only one known until the mid 1800s. It is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate (saltpeter) - with the sulfur and charcoal acting as fuels, while the saltpeter works as an oxidizer. Because of its burning properties and the amount of heat and gas volume that it generates, gunpowder has been widely used as a propellant in firearms and as a pyrotechnic composition in fireworks.
Gunpowder was, according to prevailing academic consensus, discovered in the 9th century in China, attributed to Chinese alchemists searching for an elixir of immortality. This discovery led to the invention of fireworks and the earliest gunpowder weapons in China. In the centuries following the Chinese discovery, gunpowder weapons began appearing in the Arab world, Europe, and India. The consensus is that this was spread from China, through the Middle East, and then into Europe.
Gunpowder is classified as a low explosive because of its relatively slow decomposition rate and consequently low brisance. Low explosives deflagrate at subsonic speeds, whereas high explosives detonate, producing a supersonic wave. Ignition of the powder packed behind a bullet must generate enough pressure to force it from the muzzle at high speed, but not enough to rupture the gun barrel. Gunpowder is thus less suitable for shattering rock or fortifications. Gunpowder was widely used to fill artillery shells and in mining and civil engineering to blast rock roughly until the 2nd half of the 19th century, when the first high explosive (nitro-explosives) were discovered. Gunpowder is no longer used in modern explosive military warheads, nor is it used as main explosive in mining operations due to its cost relative to that of newer alternatives like ANFO.

Make Black Powder R1
Revised method for making black powder using military manual. This method is the best of the cooking methods that I've used. It is the safest fastest method to make high quality Black Powder. You can make 1Kg in approximately 2 hours not counting the full drying time, +2-3 hr. My new revised method uses grams. When mixing in grams the calculations are simple. 75% KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate)= 750 grams by weight. 15% Charcoal = 150 grams by weight. 10% Sulfur = 100 grams by weight. 2 cups of water. This weighs more than a pound and I mix it with mixer I bought at Penny's for $100. Mix cold until smooth, no lumps and creamy texture. Place in pan on stove and heat at low temp stirring until the mix gets little bubbles all through it. I use approximately the same amount of alcohol about 40-5... -

Glock Torture Test with Black Powder
Black Powder in a Glock! Sounds a little crazy, I guess. Well, John convinced me to try it, since I have lots of experience with Glocks, with reloading, and with black powder. Warning: do not try this at home! I am a "professional gunman," so I have a license to experiment. :-) Glock quite clearly advises NOT to shoot reloads in their pistols, NOT to shoot lead bullets in their pistols, and even though they don't address it, my guess is that they would advise against using black powder in their pistols. :-) Guess this is more of a "Reliability" test than a real "Torture" test; however, torture tests are actually reliability tests when you get right down to it. We're testing the reliability of the pistol under the extreme condition of firing horribly dirty gun powder. Glocks, as well ... -
Homemade Black Powder
Here's the last of the "prepper" series. In previous vids, I showed you how to cast your own bullets and make your own charcoal. Here we finish with how to make your own custom black powder. We also do some burn rate tests to show how the homemade version is faster burning and superior to the commercial grade black powder. Enjoy and be safe. NOTE: Good point made in the comments that should be noted: Faster burn rates don't necessarily equate to better powder. It all depends on the application. If using metal pans as I did in this video you should touch everything before starting to discharge any static electrical charges. This is most important once the powder is nearly dry and when it is dry. When powder is dry in metal pan touch the outside of the pain away from the powder. I literally touch the box it's setting on first then touch the outside of the pan away from the powder then I go ahead with my process.
Us plastic or wooden stir implements. I know I've used metal but I shouldn't. You shouldn't use anything that might give off even the slightest spark.

Warning: do not try this at home! I am a "professional gunman," so I have a license to experiment. :-)
Glock quite clearly advises NOT to shoot reloads in their pistols, NOT to shoot lead bullets in their pistols, and even though they don't address it, my guess is that they would advise against using black powder in their pistols. :-)
Guess this is more of a "Reliability" test than a real "Torture" test; however, torture tests are actually reliability tests when you get right down to it. We're testing the reliability of the pistol under the extreme condition of firing horribly dirty gun powder.
Glocks, as well as other modern hi-tech pistols are famous for functioning under extreme conditions. We thought we'd test one with the dirtiest powder one can imagine and see if it would fire a full magazine without hanging up.
You might be interested to know that after soaking the barrel in Ballistol and running a couple of patches through the barrel to get the black powder crud out, the barrel was as clean and shiny as a mirror. There was NO leading at all. I did not want to shoot more than a magazine, though, because I knew that even if there was no leading, hardened black powder residue might create the same increased pressure issues as a leaded barrel, which is what polygonal rifling is supposedly subject to causing.
The powder charge was Goex FFFF. Don't know exactly how much, just as much as I could get in and still leave room for the 230 grain bullet.

Here's the last of the "prepper" series. In previous vids, I showed you how to cast your own bullets and make your own charcoal. Here we finish with how to make your own custom black powder. We also do some burn rate tests to show how the homemade version is faster burning and superior to the commercial grade black powder. Enjoy and be safe.
NOTE: Good point made in the comments that should be noted: Faster burn rates don't necessarily equate to better powder. It all depends on the application. Certain BP weapons require slower burn rates. Always make sure you match the powder with the proper application intended.
