Earlier in his life, he was a sailor, stoker, docker, railway worker, miner, and served in World War I. He played in a great number of popular London stage shows, including Shakespeare as well as film work.

Interesting period piece about smugglers in a seaside English village. A customs officer is closing in on the operation. 1780: A mulatto is disfigured and left on a small islet. He’s tied to a tree and a sign over him says he betrayed Captain Clegg. 1800: Captain Clegg went to the village of Dymchurch in 1780 and was hung as a pirate. Now the locals are smuggling booze. Captain Howard Collyer (Roy Emerton) and his men have landed and he wants to search for the smuggling operation. With them is the mulatto. He finds a trap door in a back room of the tavern. The tavern owners go into the basement and tell the Captain to look all he wants. He doesn’t discover the secret entrance to the coffin shop next door owned by Mr.Mipps. The film is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes story The Sign of the Four and was made at Ealing Studios. The film is also known as The Sign of Four: Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Case. A young woman needs Sherlock Holmes for protection when she's tormented by an escaped killer. The Sign of Four is a 1932 British crime film directed by Graham Cutts and starring Arthur Wontner, Ian Hunter and Graham Soutten. The film is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes story The Sign of the Four and was made at Ealing Studios. The film is also known as The Sign of Four: Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Case. A young woman needs Sherlock Holmes for protection when she's tormented by an escaped killer. However, when the woman is abducted, Holmes and Watson must infiltrate the city's criminal underworld to track down the young woman. The film has Sholto and Morstan together recovering the Agra Treasure in the old fort; and then has Sholto murdering Morstan. "The Tattoed Man" does not appear in the novel. Basada en la novela original de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, que sigue bastante fielmente. Cambian sólo algunos detalles.
