Google Labs was a page created by Google to demonstrate and test new projects. Google described Google Labs as "a playground where our more adventurous users can play around with prototypes of some of our wild and crazy ideas and offer feedback directly to the engineers who developed them."
Google also uses an invitation-only phase for trusted testers to test projects including Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Wave and many of these have their own "labs" webpages for experimental projects unique to each product.
In 2006, all Google Labs products had a consistent logo, using the flask, and a gray title, as opposed to other color-coded Google products, such as Google News and Google Maps. This warns users that the product may contain bugs, and could be unfit for general use.
In July 2011, Google announced that they were discontinuing Google Labs. Many of the experiments have been discontinued although a few have moved to the main search pages. The Google Labs pages now redirect to the main Google pages.
Lawrence "Larry" Page (born March 26, 1973) is an American computer scientist and internet entrepreneur who, with Sergey Brin, is best known as the co-founder of Google. On April 4, 2011, he took on the role of chief executive officer of Google, replacing Eric Schmidt. As of 2012[update], his personal wealth is estimated to be $18.7 billion. He is the inventor of PageRank, which became the foundation of Google's search ranking algorithm. Together, Brin and Page own about 16 percent of the company's stake.
Larry Page was born in Lansing, Michigan. His father, Carl Page, earned a Ph.D. in computer science in 1965 when the field was in its infancy, and is considered a "pioneer in computer science and artificial intelligence." Both he and Page's mother were computer science professors at Michigan State University. Gloria Page, his mother, is Jewish but he was raised without religion.

Google has been making synthetic human skin as part of work to create a wristband that can detect cancer, impending heart attacks and other diseases.
Scientists in the life sciences division of Google X laboratories in California needed to create arms that were as realistic as possible to test the technology.
Dr Andrew Conrad said the system, which is still in the early stages of development, would detect cancer cells when they first appear by using nanoparticles that “search” the body for disease.
It would theoretically allow diagnosis long before any physical symptoms appear, enabling early interventi

Google wants to make cities more efficient — so it's throwing a company at the problem.
Its new startup Sidewalk Labs will be devoted to solving the growing pains of cities as more and more people move to urban areas.
Google cofounder Larry Page called the company a "modest" investment but says Google is committed:
"Making long-term, 10X bets like this is hard for most companies to do, but Sergey [Brin] and I have always believed that it's important."
Google has tapped former New York City Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff to run the company. (Video via The University of Chicago)
In a press release on Sidewalk’s website, Doctoroff said, "We hope that Sidewalk will play a major role in developing technology products, platforms and advanced infrastructure that can be implemented at scale in cities around the world."
Google plans to tackle issues, such as improving governmental operation, cutting down on energy usage and increasing transportation efficiency.
That's a broad mandate, but if there's a company equipped to handle it, it's probably Google. It already runs apps and services designed to improve urban living — such as Waze and Google Maps — and has experience developing and investing in efficient energy solutions. (Video via Google)
These issues will be increasingly important in the next decades. The U.N. estimates 60 percent of the world population — some 5 billion people — will live in urban areas by 2030. It's a lot of people to keep fed, transported, employed and healthy. (Video via ABC)
And according to the U.N., food and energy infrastructure especially is already lagging. Food production might need to increase by 70 percent worldwide through 2050 to keep pace with urban hunger. (Video via The United Nations)
It's not clear what problem Google might give Sidewalk Labs first. The company has yet to announce when the new division will get down to business.

It would theoretically allow diagnosis long before any physical symptoms appear, enabling early intervention to reduce the fatality rate of illnesses.

Transcript:

It would theoretically allow diagnosis long before any physical symptoms appear, enabling early intervention to reduce the fatality rate of illnesses.
