Hetauda is a Sub-Metropolitan City in Makwanpur District of the Narayani Zone in southern Nepal. It is also the administrative headquarters of the Makwanpur district. The city has 84,671 inhabitants. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 53,836 people living in 10,420 individual households.[1]
It is 132 km from the capital Kathmandu via the old Tribhuvan Highway. There are now two alternate roads that are less than 80 km. They are, however, not black topped completely yet. The city is surrounded by three rivers, the Rapti to the west, the Samari to the north and the Karra to the south.

About Kathmandu-Kulekhani-Hetauda Tunnel (KKHT) Highway
The development plan of KKHT Highway has been initiated in the context of much talked about and most desired short cut route out of the valley. This highway will connect entire western followed by southern and eastern parts of Nepal through Hetauda and will significantly boost overall economic growth of the corridor, region and the whole country.
The Hetauda-Narayanghat-Mugling-Kathmandu passage is one of the highest trafficked road corridors in Nepal. Most of the goods from India or third countries are brought to Kathmandu via this route from Birgunj and other places. The road length from Hetauda to Kathmandu is approximately 227 km with travel time of approx. 6-8 hrs. The alternative route - the Tribhuvan Highway, though only 133 km in length still requires travel time of approx. 7-8 hrs. Whereas the purposed KKHT Highway will connect Kathmandu with Hetauda via Kulekhani in an hour.

At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 53,836 people living in 10,420 individual households. However, the population has skyrocketed since the 1991 census and it is a widely acknowledged fact that the city's population is much higher than the count commonly found on the internet. Wolfram alpha search engine presents the 2004 estimate of population to be about 85,000. Similar projection can also he found here.
It is 132 km from the capital Kathmandu via the old Tribhuvan Highway. There are now two alternate roads that are less than 80 km. They are, however, not black topped yet. The city is enclosed by three rivers, the Rapti to the west, the Samari to the north and the Karra to the south. It is one the important industrial regions of Nepal. The settlement started due to its location at Tribhuvan Highway, and later was the meeting point of another major national highway - East-West Highway.

In our attempt to learn how to roll like a local tourist, we went to a local theme park that only Nepali's frequent. The park, just outside of Hetauda, Nepal, is called Smarak (pronounced esmarak), and is equipped with a ferris wheel, monuments, photo studios, food courts, and a zoo. Yet, all of this is exempt from the Nepal Lonely Planet handbook because these are not the kind of places people generally want to go to when they are travelling abroad. They go for these kind of parks in their own country. But we want to roll like the locals...Can we fit in?... -
