The Center on Global Energy Policy hosted a presentation and discussion on The Future of Solar Energy, a study published by the MIT Energy Initiative. The study examines the technical, economic and policy dimensions of solar energy today and makes policy recommendation aimed at supporting the efficient and effective deployment of solar energy over the long-term. Francis O'Sullivan, Director of Research and Analysis at the MIT Energy Initiative, and Senior Lecturer, MIT Sloan School of Management, presented the study and its key findings. Dr. Varun Sivaram, Douglas Dillon Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations, and strategic advisor to the Office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), then offered a reaction. Their remarks were followed by a moderated conversation with CGEP Inaugural Fellow David Sandalow.

Will Chueh is an assistant professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department and a center fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford. Chueh received his master's degree (2010) in applied physics and doctorate in materials science from the California Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Stanford in 2012, he was a Distinguished Truman Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories. Chueh has received numerous honors, including the Caltech DemetriadesTsafka-Kokkalis Prize in Energy (2012), the Josephine de Karman Fellowship (2009) and the American Ceramics Society Diamond Award (2008). In 2012, he was named as one of the "top 35 innovators under the age of 35" by MIT Technology Review.

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and solar architecture, which can make considerable contributions to solving some of the most urgent problems the world now faces.
Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.
In 2011, the International Energy Agency said that "the development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean solar energy technologies will have huge longer-term benefits. It will increase countries’ energy security through reliance on an indigenous, inexhaustible and mostly import-independent resource, enhance sustainability, reduce pollution, lower the costs of mitigating climate change, and keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise. These advantages are global. Hence the additional costs of the incentives for early deployment should be considered learning investments; they must be wisely spent and need to be widely shared".

The Center on Global Energy Policy hosted a presentation and discussion on The Future of Solar Energy, a study published by the MIT Energy Initiative. The study examines the technical, economic and policy dimensions of solar energy today and makes policy recommendation aimed at supporting the efficient and effective deployment of solar energy over the long-term. This Smart Green House Prototype combines between precision farming and smart energy harvesting. using Infineon LED Driver, XMC1202, it can control the lighting spectrum precisely which replaces needs from the sun. It is essential to control the spectrum due to necessity of each growing phase of crop such as the needs of lighting spectrum is different between seedling stage and flowering. The green house is sustained by several modules to make the minimum system to make the green house prototype representative such this prototype has DS2431 as a temperature sensor, peltier driver to control the temperature hotter/colder makes the green house able to be used either in 2 seasons country like indonesia or 4 seasons like Europe or USA.
It has also water pump which controlled by Controller Module. It is a self sustained irrigation and more less sustaining the temperature along with peltier (and fans).
For the energy harvesting supporting modules, it employes Stepper Motor driver using IPD30N06 from Infineon Power Mosfet. This driver responsible to absorb the optimum sun energy by rotating the solar panel so it becomes Orthogonal with the sun.
To measure the sensors we have an LCD and IC 4149 to monitor the Wattage of our Loads. Using this IC from MAXIM INTEGRATION, we can tell the Power usage of the green house.

“One of the main goals was energy efficiency,” he says. “...They aren’t operational yet, but will be before the end of the year.”
It’s no easy task powering, heating and cooling 72,000 square feet, but Huff, who currently lives in the guest wing, has worked tirelessly to achieve his goal. Soon, Pensmore will come to life from the power of the sun.
Powering the palace
When sunlight hits Pensmore’s roof, the panels create a chain reaction as photons knock electrons free of atoms in the particles of light, generating a flow of electricity. This energy is channeled from the rooftop to the third level of Pensmore.
Wandering through the skeleton of Pensmore’s unfinished area, Huff takes a right into the inverter room. Two Skywire Electric employees are standing behind a row of inverters. Huff walks around the partially-completed wall and greets them, asking about their day and progress. And then Huff gets back on topic, explaining how the system — his own design — will operate. He points out the channels where the green energy will travel. Out of the wall, across the ceiling, down poles and into the inverters — the system is efficient in operation.
Huff has taken great time and care in the design and sought out the most innovative tools to complete his specific project. For instance, batteries.
“The best battery depends on what you’re trying to do,” Huff says.
For him, that was North Star Battery, located in Springfield. It’s surprising and impressive, he says, how many resources are right in his own backyard.
That’s another important aspect of Pensmore, says Ralf Augstroze, media coordinator, who towers at 6 feet, 9 inches tall with a firm handshake.
“All technology here is made in the U.S.” Augstroze says.

From the roof of Pensmore, you can see for miles. Pristine hills blanketed by fleeting fall colors, meadows and glades —the view, standing in the chilly morning breeze, will take your breath away. The sun has just appeared over the hills in southern Christian County, shedding its life-giving light on the earth below. The blue-tinted mansion appears out of place in Highlandville, standing tall on the hilltop.
The sunlight that falls on the rooftop is vital for Pensmore as the rays reflect off 142 shimmering, blue solar panels. Homeowner Steven Huff smiles at the project, two weeks old and a step closer to attaining his mission of sustainable, green energy for Pensmore.
“One of the main goals was energy efficiency,” he says. “...They aren’t operational yet, but will be before the end of the year.”
It’s no easy task powering, heating and cooling 72,000 square feet, but Huff, who currently lives in the guest wing, has worked tirelessly to achieve his goal. Soon, Pensmore will come to life from the power of the sun.
Powering the palace
When sunlight hits Pensmore’s roof, the panels create a chain reaction as photons knock electrons free of atoms in the particles of light, generating a flow of electricity. This energy is channeled from the rooftop to the third level of Pensmore.
Wandering through the skeleton of Pensmore’s unfinished area, Huff takes a right into the inverter room. Two Skywire Electric employees are standing behind a row of inverters. Huff walks around the partially-completed wall and greets them, asking about their day and progress. And then Huff gets back on topic, explaining how the system — his own design — will operate. He points out the channels where the green energy will travel. Out of the wall, across the ceiling, down poles and into the inverters — the system is efficient in operation.
Huff has taken great time and care in the design and sought out the most innovative tools to complete his specific project. For instance, batteries.
“The best battery depends on what you’re trying to do,” Huff says.
For him, that was North Star Battery, located in Springfield. It’s surprising and impressive, he says, how many resources are right in his own backyard.
That’s another important aspect of Pensmore, says Ralf Augstroze, media coordinator, who towers at 6 feet, 9 inches tall with a firm handshake.
“All technology here is made in the U.S.” Augstroze says.
