In part 7 of this series Kurt, a platoon leader for the motorized SS Division Reich, explained in his war diary how, after crossing the Dnjepr River, a Soviet truck had wandered into his regiment position. Fired on by the sentries Kurt somehow managed to sleep through the engagement. His sensational diary which includes his medals continues up through operation Typhoon and the desperate attack towards Moscow. In addition to using his diary, I’ll use these situational maps, associated rare film footage and other primary historical sources. I’ll show two more parts from the German combat training film Digging in under fire so stick around, it’s worth it.

Today we’re embedded with the 10. Pz. Rgt., that was part of the 8. Pz. Div. in Army Group North, as it moved into the Soviet Union in June of 1941. We’ll look at more from that reel of private footage and talk about the history of the division, we’ll take a quick look at the illustrated journal Signal that was published at the time and we’ll see the next clip from the tank training film that was shown earlier.
This is the situational map from June 21, the day before operation Barbarossa began. We’ll be looking at Army Group North which was tasked with advancing through the Baltic states and taking Leningrad. The army group was allocated 20 infantry divisions, three motorized infantry divisions and 3 panzer divisions.
Standing in their way within this 800 km stretch were 18-20 Soviet infantry divisions, 8 or 9 mechanized brigades, and two calvary divisions. The plan was to penetrate and drive through enemy line quickly and destroy the bulk of the army in a 300 km area to the west of the Dvina River. If this couldn’t be accomplished the Soviets would be able to build a formidable defensive line on the eastern bank of the river.
The motorized divisions were to overrun the Soviet resistance and leave all moping up for the infantry that would be moving in behind. To keep the element of surprise, the panzer divisions were not to move forward to their starting position until the the night of the 21st. With the limited space mobility was complicated. During the opening phase of the operation the supplying of the Panzer Divisions would have priority over the bringing in of reinforcements.
The 8th. PzD was being lead by General der Panzertruppe Erich Brandenberger. and was attached to Erich von Manstein’s LVI (56th) Panzer Corps, part of Panzer Group 4.
This photo is from June 21 and shows Brandenberger, to the left, and Manstien in Eastern Prussia discussing the coming operation. Here we see Brandenberger again on June 22 with a Panzerjäger or anti-tank unit of his division.
It’s interesting seeing the different field uniform that he’s wearing here in contrast to what he had on in the other photo. There’s no point in giving a possible Soviet sniper an easily distinguishable high value target.
Here’s footage of the 8 PzD that was taken on the morning of June 22.
At exactly 3.05 the distant thunder of 120 artillery pieces could be heard and the 8th began advancing.
This footage is from the Deutsche Wochenschau Nr. 564 from the 25.6.1941 and shows German troops of Army Group North crossing the border and moving into Lithuania.
Erich Brandenberger maneuvered his division skillfully along a gap between enemy units where they encountered little resistance. By the afternoon a number of bridges across the Dubysa river were taken intact and by the end of the day 70 km had been travelled.
To the the north the operations had also been successful however the 6th PzD had been involved in intense combat in a forrest area and had taken heavy losses. The hold up of their advance was worrying to the 8. because 6th had been intended to be the other half of the armored pincher.
The 6th had been able to finally break the enemy resistance but their advance to the east was constantly slowed by engagements with enemy armor. On the morning of June 23 what the 8th was now to do was a complicated question. Extended as it already was and with a dangerously exposed flank, the decision was made that the division would keep its momentum and continue racing east.
Surprisingly the soviet armor in the area bypassed the 8th and moving westwards to engage the 6th.
At 1:50 word was sent back to headquarters that it would be possible to send a relieving force to support the 6th but headquarters again insisted that the division continue its eastern advance. It would stay in contact with the 6th in order to react if necessary however the objective would be to seize the city of Kedainiai which would bring relief to the units to the north by eliminating the retreat route to the south east of the enemy units engaging them.
By the evening the 8th PzD had managed to take the town of Josvainiai, just 10 km west of Kedainiai and had so far only encountered weak resistance. Everything had gone smoothly for the division. But arial reconnaissance had located 350 enemy tanks nearby that would certainly soon have to be dealt with.
A subscriber asked me to confirm that the crosses shown next to the names of the correspondents in the opening Deutsche Wochenschau credits mean that they were killed in action, and that’s correct. I’ve looked back and see that these journalists, Carl and Hammer, which are shown in DW Nr. 566 from July 10 of 1941 are the first ones listed during the Eastern campaign.

Today we are back with the 10. Pz. Rgt. which was part of the 8. Pz Div. as they remain the most advanced unit for all of Army Group North during the opening phase of Barbarossa. Watching footage of this unit, we’ll see an incredibly rare clip of what was considered an early Wunderwaffe on the Eastern Front. Then we’ll follow the 8. PzD as it advances on and then take the key city of Dünaberg. A special forces Brandenburger unit made the success of this operation possible and we’ll see exactly how they did that.
This is the situational map for June 25 1941 on the Eastern Front. We are looking at Army Group North, specifically Erich von Manstein’s 56th Panzer Corps, part of Panzer Group 4. and their drive to the north east towards Leningrad.
The fact that the 8. had advanced so much farther than the 1. and the 6. panzer divisions was not because of a lack of aggressiveness. From June 23 until the 27 these panzer divisions were engaged with Soviet armor attached to the 12 Soviet mechanized corps in what would be known as the Battle of Raseinia which was the first tank battle on the eastern front.
After taking part in the Polish campaign in 1939 the 3rd Light Division was expanded, to become the 8th panzer Division. This is when the 10th Pz. Regiment, which came from Eastern Prussia, was incorporated. The division was outfitted with 212 tanks which were primarily Czech and Panzer 2 light tanks.
This is a Hanomag 252 armored troop transport from the 3. Kompanie of the Panzer Pioneer Battalion 59. Both sides of the transport were armed with 3 launchers similar in functionality to the Nebelwerfer, or smoke launchers. The 6 launchers launched 28 cm rockets that the soldiers had named Stukas zu Fuss, or Walking Stukas because of the tremendous whistling noise that they produced when fired which effected enemy moral.
The division’s orders for the 25th were to continue moving north east towards Dünaburg. The division was divided into two Kampfgruppen, or battle groups. Lieutenant colonel Crisolli lead the first group which would head out before dawn and contained the 10. Pz Rgt. The other battle group would follow behind.
The advance of the 8th Pz. Div. continued late into night of the 25th until the unit arrived to the outskirts of Dünaburg. Other than the 3. ID (mot.) which had followed the 8th in, the next closest German formation was the 3. SS Pz. Div. Totenkopf which was about 100 km behind.
Again the division was divided into two Kampfgruppen. Positioned to the right, lieutenant colonel Crisolli with his group would wait until the moment was right when he would make a move to the main road bridge into Dünaburg. The group to the left was led by Colonel Scheller who would then move on the rail bridge into the city. Surprise was key. Should the Soviets take note of the danger they would surly blow the bridges and prepare their defenses for the pending attack.
Ahead of these Kampfgruppen, two teams of Brandenburger Lehrregiment 800 soldiers were sent forward. The leader of the Brandenburger team was lieutenant colonel Knaak and experienced officer. Each team was transported in two captured soviet trucks and, as you can see here in this grainy photograph, the special forces soldiers were wearing captured soviet uniforms.
The left attacking group approached the rail bridge and drove unnoticed past 5 Soviet armored cars. They continued onto the bridge and came face to face with more armored cars. Armed only with machine guns, engaging the enemy would have been hopeless so they quickly reversed and wildly crashed onto the road to the right at the base of the bridge and set up a defensive perimeter. Sergeant Krückeberg, found and was able to disconnect, a demolition charge that had been placed to destroy the bridge.
Knaak and his group of Brandenburgers were tasked with taking the main bridge into the city. As they approached in their captured trucks the Soviet guards manning the security post at the bridge’s base were busy speaking to civilians. Without hesitation the Brandenburgers engaged and killed them and then quickly sped onto the bridge.
Not until almost reaching the other side did the enemy begin firing from both sides of the river and heavily defended positions along the eastern bank. Just as Knaak’s contingent in the lead truck pulled off the bridge down a steep embankment to the right a Soviet PAK fired and hit the truck, immediately killing Knaak.
The withering fire immobilized the second truck. Those that were not injured got out and managed to run across and join their comrades on the eastern bank. The task at hand now was to the hold the position against attacking Soviet engineers who intended to blow up the bridge until reinforcements could arrive.

========= Ghost Division LYRICS =========
Fast as the wind, the invasion has begun
Shaking the ground with the force of thousand guns
First in the line of fire, first into hostile land
Tanks leading the way, leading the way
Charging the lines with the force of a furious storm
Fast as the lighting phantoms swarm
200 miles at nightfall, taken within a day
Thus earning the name, earning the fame
[Chorus:]
They are the panzer elite, born to compete, never retreat (ghost division)
Living or dead, always ahead, fed by your dread
Always ahead, as the blitzkrieg rages on
Breaking morale with the sound of blazing guns
First in the line of fire, first into hostile land
Tanks leading the way, leading the way
Leaving a trail of destruction through a foreign land
(Waging war with conviction)
Massive assault live to serve the Nazi plan
(Wehrmacht’s pride, ghost division)
Communications broken, phantoms too far away
Thus earning the name, earning the fame
[Chorus]
Pushing the frontline forth with a tremendous force
(Far ahead, breaks resistance)
Breaching the way for panzer corps
(Shows no fear, self-subsistent)
First in the line of fire, first into hostile land
Tanks leading the way, claiming the fame
[Chorus]
Panzer elite, born to compete, never retreat (ghost division)
Living our dead, always ahead, fed by your dread

Episode 120
We are looking at the original OKW situational map for July 13th 1941 specifically at Army Group Center. We can see the Motorized SS Division Reich situated here After crossing the Dnjepr River. Kurt’s Regiment Der Führer had set up a 5 KM bridgehead which secured the eastern bank from a possible Soviet counter attack. It allowed the SS Pi. Btl. Reich to to build a 16 ton temporary bridge near Schklow which was completed on the 13th.
Now, let’s take a look at a clip from the combat training film. At the end of this video there will be another.
On July 14th at 22.50 hrs Reich received orders to veer south on July 15th in order to free up the south west flank of the 10. PzD so that they could continue advancing to the North East. This turned out to be a fighting advance as various Soviet divisions and the remains of others were being squeezed to the south west. By the night of the 15th Kurt’s Rgt. Der Führer had reached the city of Mstislawl and just to the east of city limits engaged with the enemy that was supported by heavy artillery. The fighting was of low intensity with neither side suffering much damage however when night fell both sides became disoriented and chaos ensued. Kurt’s Rgt. managed to capture a number of artillery pieces and took some prisoners.
Here, Kurt has added the wrong date to the next entry which is evident because of the events he writes about…and also because his next entry is dated July 18. The correct date is July 15th. He continues…
Das Bataillon tritt zum Weitermarsch an und..
The Batalion continues with its advance and as it is passing the town of Biry it is fired on from the houses. The 6th Company which is at the front of the formation immediately fans out to attack. I am at the entrance of the town with sergeant Starick, Köstler and three other men rush down the main street. With our limited number of men we’re unable to search and clear each of the houses and so go to the easiest method - fire. The straw roofs light easily and soon the entire town block is engulfed in a sea of flames and the intense heat forces us to retreat. When it dies down we enter the town and move up to the highest point to get a good view. From this vantage point we’re spotted by a German anti tank crew that mistakes us for Russians and begin firing rounds at us. After 3 shots that fortunately miss we fire our last signal flare and they stop firing. In the town we recover one enemy anti tank gun and various machine guns and then continue with our advance.
This sort of friendly-fire incident was difficult to avoid when units were not well informed about the movements of neighboring formations.
After the war Stubaf. or Major Kumm, who was in command of Rgt. Der Führer at the time recalls a similar situation as the unit was moving east towards Mstislawl on the 15th. As the Regiment approached the city peering over an incline it could be seen that tanks were present although it was unclear whether they were German or Soviet. He ordered the advance to continue cautiously towards the city. It was in fact a group of tanks from the 10th PzD which had taken Mstislawl from the North West under orders to destroy enemy columns in and around the city. As the regiment was advancing, it was spotted and the tank commander asked multiple time for permission to engage the approaching column. Fortunately fire was held. Had the 40 or so tanks opened fire it’s likely that the regiment would have all but wiped out and this war diary would have ended abruptly.

Part 8:
Bryansk Kesselschlacht: The 29 infantery division mot. was tasked to advance on Seredina Buda on the extreme left off panzergroup 2 attack line. After its succesfull capature it advanced further to the mouth of river Revna (15 km south east of Bryansk) and achieved this on 7th october 1941. Meanwhile 2nd army was approaching Bryansk from the west and so a pocket was formed. Guarding the eastern ring of the kessel (together with 17th panzer north east, 10th ID mot. east 25th ID mot. east 293th ID south east 262 ID south) fierce counterattacks by sovjet troups accurred who were trying to break out. This continued until 11th october when a crisis arose between the boundary of 25th ID mot. and 29th ID mot. (sovjets created a gap in the defences). But the hasty arrival of the 5th machine gun battalion rescued the situation.
The High Command of the Wehrmacht changed its strategic objectives according to Hitler's will and in accordance with the new situation on the northern wing of Army Group South. Not Moscow, but the Ukrainian industrial areas on the Donbass were to be taken first. The troops west of Moscow were to be put on defense for the time being, while in the Kiev area a new encirclement battle was to be prepared to surround the Soviet southwestern front. Colonel General Guderian was ordered to headquarters in Rastenburg for 23 August; contrary to his misgivings, he was ordered to disengage his three armored corps from the fighting east of Smolensk and swing south.
The 29th Infantry Division was reorganized with substantial participation of the old 15th Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr in October 1936 at Erfurt in Wehrkreis IX. In the fall of 1937, the infantry division was motorized, i.e., equipped with trucks, and henceforth designated the 29th Infantry Division (motorized). Mobilization took place on August 24, 1939.
During the invasion of Poland, the 29th Infantry Division (mot.), as part of the XIV Army Corps (mot.) of the 10th Army, participated in the encirclement of Polish forces at Radom. It was through members of the division that the Ciepielów Massacre was perpetrated. As part of the 16th Army, the division took part in the Western Campaign. It advanced near the English Channel and was in the strategic reserve at the Battle of Dunkirk. Later it made a rapid advance into eastern France with Heinz Guderian's Panzer Group. As an occupation force, it remained stationed there until early summer 1941. As part of Panzer Group 2, the 29th Infantry Division (mot.) participated in the attack on the Soviet Union beginning on 22 June 1941. It was involved in the Kessel Battles of Minsk, Smolensk, and Bryansk, and supported Guderian's tank units at Tula. During the Battle of Tula, the division suffered heavy losses and lost many vehicles. In the first half of 1942, the 29th Infantry Division (mot.) was in action near Orel. From June onward, the advance followed via Kharkov to the Don River bend until shortly before Stalingrad (cf. Fall Blau).
According to contemporary accounts (see, e.g., Memoirs of Colonel General Heinz Guderian), the 29th ID (mot.) was one of the best mobile divisions of the Wehrmacht.
