After the success of the 1/16 R/C Russian KV-1 tank, Tamiya has released a second Russian Tank, the 1/16 R/C KV-2. In November 1940, mass production of the KV-2 began. The KV-2 tank was part of a series of Soviet tanks named after defense commissar Kilment Voroshilov. The large stature of the KV-2 was needed to house its 3.25m large turret, 24-caliber 1938/40 152mm M-10 howitzer and ammunition. This tank could hold 36 shells of various types of ammunition, including a special armor-piercing shell to attack concrete pillboxes. On June 24th, 1941 the KV tanks faced the German 6th Panzer Division in Lithuania. The massive size of the KV and 75mm thick armor was difficult for the German force to penetrate. German soldiers called the KV tanks "Ungeheuer{" (monster) and "Gigant" (giant) because of their enormous size.

September 18, 1942. French Newsreel. On August 24, the 16th Panzer Division of the German 6th Army reached the northern outskirts of Stalingrad near Spartakovka and Rynok. By August 28th, the division - cut off on the northern outskirts of the city since its breakthrough on the 23rd and out of ammunition - was ready to withdraw, when a supply convoy of some two hundred and fifty trucks, loaded with captured British and American aid, arrived in the wake of the 3rd Motorized Division. Now, there were two divisions separated by eighteen miles of communist controlled ground between the bulk of 6th Army, and the Panzers at Spartakovka and Rynok. Translation by Olivenstein: The battle of Stalingrad. After traversing the Don, Field marshal von Bock's troops reach the steppe country. North of the city, a German armoured division spearheads to the Volga. Isolated several days away from their bases, the vanguard have installed their positions on the west bank of the river. While thus controlling Volga river traffic, the Germans have as well succeeded in cutting the Moscow-Stalingrad railroad. Artillery pounds the city's defences. Off in the smoke, Stalingrad can be seen."

On July 30th of 1944 near Les Loges in Normandy, three Jagdpanthers from schwere Panzer Jaeger Abteilung 654 ambushed a squadron of British 6th Guards Tank Brigade destroying some 10-11 Churchill tanks in a short period of two minutes.At the same time, other squadron of British 6th Guards Tank Brigade opened fire at three Jagdpanthers causing crews of two of them to abandon their vehicles (because of damaged tracks), while the third one retreated.Jagdpanthers were grouped into independent schwere Panzerjager Abteilungens - heavy anti-tank battalions (with 3 companies with 14 vehicles each and 3 vehicles in battalion HQ) and those that operated as part of Panzer Division. First Jagdpanthers were issued to schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 559 and 654 and reached the frontline in Western Europe in June of 1944. Only 654th had full compliment of 42 vehicles, while 559th had only 10 to 14 vehicles. Majority of Jagdpanthers produced saw service on the Eastern Front, while only single battalion (schwere Panzerjaeger Abteilung 654) saw service during Normandy Battles in the Summer of 1944. In preparations for the Ardennes Offensive, the largest number ever of Jagdpanthers was assembled, including vehicles transferred to the Western Front from the Eastern Front to take part in the offensive. Some 51 Jagdpanther in six battalions took part in the fighting in December of 1944.

This video of a Germany 1944 soldier (belonging to the former and famous 21st Panzer Division) was taken in the beach of Omaha, Normandy, where I have been on June 6th, 2004, arround 07:00 in the morning, for the Sixty Aniversary of the Disembark recordations. Through the message board created for this YouTube video, I was informed that his name is Walter Gartner, that he lives in Ramstein, Germany, and that he was an obergefreiter in the indicated Panzer division.
