Kakheti is Georgia's main wine-producing region in the country's east. Wine grapes have been cultivated in these lands for 8,000 years, which, archaeologists say, makes Kakheti the cradle of wine.

Georgia has protected its artistic heritage and been able to maintain the vibrancy of its unique traditions. It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean.
The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world. Most of them are used to make high-quality wines as prestigious as Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Theliani or Napareuli, all of which have received gold, silver and bronze medal awards in international competitions.
The care of the grape pickers and the meticulous selection process during the harvest, have led to Georgian wines enjoying worldwide recognition. According to archaeological research, Georgia is at the very cradle of wine culture, as grapes have been cultivated in this area for 7,000 years. It may even be true that the generic word for this most ancient of alcoholic drinks is derived from the Georgian word “gvino” And in some “marani”, or traditional wine cellars, such as this one in the town of Gurjaani, grapes are still pressed by foot in wooden vats to avoid crushing the seeds, which would give the wine a bitter taste.
In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation.
These fossilized grapes from the Neolithic Age and the discovery of vessels from the III century B.C., prove that since Prehistory, wine has played a key socioeconomic role in this region.

At the foot of the Caucasus, the Kakheti province of eastern Georgia is famous for its wine and its polyphonic songs. Banquets with their alternation of ritualized toasts and collective singing are considered by Georgians as a major component of national identity. Verbal art and musical art are bound together in a unique way.
Georgian banquets conventionally are the prerogative of men. Master folk singer Andro Simashvili, known as Andro Papa, leads his friends at a classical men’s banquet. On the other hand, renowned female singer Leila Legashvili is the toastmaster at a women’s banquet, where Andro Simashvili is an honored guest. Long songs and elaborate toasts are shown in their integrality, revealing important insights into Georgian cultural values.

Kakheti is justly renowned as the most important wine-growing region of Georgia. Every village produces its own kind of wine, some of which will rival more famous labels like Tsinandali or Napareuli. Throughout the region you can knock on any door for direction and find yourself 5 seconds later with a glass of wine in hand and an invitation to stay the afternoon to drink and eat.
The most visited towns in Kakheti are Telavi and Signagi. Telavi is considered as the administrative and cultural center of this region. Rich in gardens and streets with oak and walnut trees Telavi clearly retains the pleasure of small city.
Small town Signagi also called Town of Love has been renovated three years ago. Narrow, tortuous streets and wooden balconies create some special atmosphere. The old part with different historical monuments is surrounded by 17th century city wall and towers. Until recently there were only some family hotels, but now Signagi features couple of hotels, where you can find pleasurable atmosphere and well-known Georgian hospitality.
Georgian wine for local people is more than just wine. This is true not only because it has the centuries-old history and excellent gustatory qualities, but also because the vine is a symbol of history as well, history of vine-growing and wine-making in Georgia that numbers several thousand years. This is confirmed by multiple archaeological excavations. Stones of grapes of cultivated species, discovered on the territory of Georgia, are dated by 7000 B.C. And in 1995, bronze statuette of a man was found in Georgia, holding a horn with wine in his hands.
You can enjoy wine-tasting in wine-cellars, restaurants or local houses and spend and the most unforgettable time ever.
The best time to visit Kakheti is during Rtveli, the harvest season at the beginning of October. The autumn colors are magnificent, and every village celebrates the bounty of its vineyards by decorating balconies with branches of grapes and filling every basket and bucket until theyre brimming over. On October, 22, Kakheti celebrates Wine Festival. You can notice people in traditional clothes making barbeque, churchkhela (Georgian candy) and some other dishes from Georgian traditional cuisine. In many yards youll be offered a taste from a ladle just emerging from deep inside kvevri, the large clay amphora buried underground in which Kakheti wine ferments.

LAST GEORGIAN STOP: KAKHETI, THE WINE ROUTE AND SO MUCH MORE
After having spent quite some time in the capital and for our last destination within Georgia, we decided to explore the eastern part aka the Kakheti region.
We rented a car for 4 days and drove through the Wine Route. The area is full of fantastic monasteries and nunneries immersed in the vineyards. We slept in a beautiful winery and tried the semi sweet red wine, what a blast! The fruity taste and the slightly fizzy beverage conquered us immediately. We highly recommend visiting the area not only for wine tasting but also for its rich history.
Did you know that one of the king of Kakheti sent his troops to liberate Jerusalem from the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century?
Back from Kakheti, we spent two more days in Tbilisi. The reason for that? The previous week we noticed a bunch of preparation going on the main street (Rustaveli Avenue). We found out the MAy the 26th is the Georgian independence day (it’s also the birthday of a very special person by the way). So we came back and we were not disappointed at all (even though we did not find any cervelas to grill). During that day, we saw:
- The Georgian president swearing in the new recruits of the army
- The main street close to traffic, full of artists, tasting booths and children dressup up in Georgian colors
The crazy brass band of the American army. They played “in the mood” while dancing
- Tanks, police car and fire trucks overwhelmed by children trying to test everything in them (especially the horn)
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY:
- Gremi, the castle, the church and the museum. Wonderful views from one of the tower.
- The semi sweet red wine from Khareba, better tasted in their wine tunnels.
ACCOMMODATION
- Schuchmann Winery, beautiful house on the hill overlooking the valley. Comfortable rooms plus a great swimming pool (ask Daniel about that!).
- Dzveli Ubani, nice guest house located in romantic Sighnaghi. The owner is very sweet and her breakfast is 100% homemade!
RESTAURANTS
- Pancho Villa, the only mexican restaurant in the country, so much fun to have fajitas and margaritas in the middle of Georgia. The owner is adorable and the cocina so caliente!
- Schuchmann Restaurant @ Schuchmann Winery, a very good surprise! The food is excellent and the staff very professional, their wine of course is great.
BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
This week the best secret tip is not really a secret tip but just a note to not miss the Alaverdi Monastery when visiting the region. After a drive on a road lined with huge poplars, the monastery finally shows up and I (Magali) immediately loved it!

Kakheti
Kakheti (Georgian: კახეთი) is a region (Georgian: Mkhare) formed in the 1990s in eastern Georgia from the historical province of Kakheti and the small, mountainous province of Tusheti. Telavi is its capital. The region comprises eight administrative districts: Telavi, Gurjaani, Kvareli, Sagarejo, Dedoplistsqaro, Signagi, Lagodekhi and Akhmeta. Kakheti is bordered by the Russian Federation to the Northeast, Azerbaijan to the Southeast, and the Georgian regions of Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Kvemo Kartli to the west.
The Georgian David Gareja monastery complex is partially located in this province and is subject to a border dispute between Georgian and Azerbaijani authorities.
Geography
Beyond the modern-day administrative subdivision into the districts, Kakheti has traditionally been subdivided into four parts: Inner Kakheti (შიდა კახეთი, Shida Kakheti) to the east of Tsiv-Gombori mountain range, along the right bank of the Alazani River; Outer Kakheti (გარე კახეთი, Gare Kakheti) along the middle Iori River basin; Kiziq'i (ქიზიყი) between the Alazani and the Iori; Thither Area (გაღმა მხარი, Gaghma Mkhari) on the left bank of the Alazani. It also includes the medieval region of Hereti whose name has fallen into gradual oblivion since the 15th century.

LAST GEORGIAN STOP: KAKHETI, THE WINE ROUTE AND SO MUCH MORE After having spent quite some time in the capital and for our last destination within Georgia, we decided to explore the eastern part aka the Kakheti region. We rented a car for 4 days and drove through the Wine Route. The area is full of fantastic monasteries and nunneries immersed in the vineyards. We slept in a beautiful winery and tried the semi sweet red wine, what a blast! The fruity taste and the slightly fizzy beverage conquered us immediately. We highly recommend visiting the area not only for wine tasting but also for its rich history. A total of 104 endemic varieties of grapes grow at the Alaverdi Monastery of Saint George, which traces its history back to the sixth century. The unique Georgian way of making wine was passed on by the Orthodox monks through the ages.

It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean.
The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world. Most of them are used to make high-quality wines as prestigious as Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Theliani or Napareuli, all of which have received gold, silver and bronze medal awards in international competitions.
The care of the grape pickers and the meticulous selection process during the harvest, have led to Georgian wines enjoying worldwide recognition. According to archaeological research, Georgia is at the very cradle of wine culture, as grapes have been cultivated in this area for 7,000 years. It may even be true that the generic word for this most ancient of alcoholic drinks is derived from the Georgian word “gvino” And in some “marani”, or traditional wine cellars, such as this one in the town of Gurjaani, grapes are still pressed by foot in wooden vats to avoid crushing the seeds, which would give the wine a bitter taste.
In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation.
These fossilized grapes from the Neolithic Age and the discovery of vessels from the III century B.C., prove that since Prehistory, wine has played a key socioeconomic role in this region.

Kakheti is justly renowned as the most important wine-growing region of Georgia. Every village produces its own kind of wine, some of which will rival more famous labels like Tsinandali or Napareuli. Throughout the region you can knock on any door for direction and find yourself 5 seconds later with a glass of wine in hand and an invitation to stay the afternoon to drink and eat.
The most visited towns in Kakheti are Telavi and Signagi. Telavi is considered as the administrative and cultural center of this region. Rich in gardens and streets with oak and walnut trees Telavi clearly retains the pleasure of small city.
Small town Signagi also called Town of Love has been renovated three years ago. Narrow, tortuous streets and wooden balconies create some special atmosphere. The old part with different historical monuments is surrounded by 17th century city wall and towers. Until recently there were only some family hotels, but now Signagi features couple of hotels, where you can find pleasurable atmosphere and well-known Georgian hospitality.
Georgian wine for local people is more than just wine. This is true not only because it has the centuries-old history and excellent gustatory qualities, but also because the vine is a symbol of history as well, history of vine-growing and wine-making in Georgia that numbers several thousand years. This is confirmed by multiple archaeological excavations. Stones of grapes of cultivated species, discovered on the territory of Georgia, are dated by 7000 B.C. And in 1995, bronze statuette of a man was found in Georgia, holding a horn with wine in his hands.
You can enjoy wine-tasting in wine-cellars, restaurants or local houses and spend and the most unforgettable time ever.
The best time to visit Kakheti is during Rtveli, the harvest season at the beginning of October. The autumn colors are magnificent, and every village celebrates the bounty of its vineyards by decorating balconies with branches of grapes and filling every basket and bucket until theyre brimming over. On October, 22, Kakheti celebrates Wine Festival. You can notice people in traditional clothes making barbeque, churchkhela (Georgian candy) and some other dishes from Georgian traditional cuisine. In many yards youll be offered a taste from a ladle just emerging from deep inside kvevri, the large clay amphora buried underground in which Kakheti wine ferments.

After having spent quite some time in the capital and for our last destination within Georgia, we decided to explore the eastern part aka the Kakheti region.
We rented a car for 4 days and drove through the Wine Route. The area is full of fantastic monasteries and nunneries immersed in the vineyards. We slept in a beautiful winery and tried the semi sweet red wine, what a blast! The fruity taste and the slightly fizzy beverage conquered us immediately. We highly recommend visiting the area not only for wine tasting but also for its rich history.
Did you know that one of the king of Kakheti sent his troops to liberate Jerusalem from the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century?
Back from Kakheti, we spent two more days in Tbilisi. The reason for that? The previous week we noticed a bunch of preparation going on the main street (Rustaveli Avenue). We found out the MAy the 26th is the Georgian independence day (it’s also the birthday of a very special person by the way). So we came back and we were not disappointed at all (even though we did not find any cervelas to grill). During that day, we saw:
- The Georgian president swearing in the new recruits of the army
- The main street close to traffic, full of artists, tasting booths and children dressup up in Georgian colors
The crazy brass band of the American army. They played “in the mood” while dancing
- Tanks, police car and fire trucks overwhelmed by children trying to test everything in them (especially the horn)
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY:
- Gremi, the castle, the church and the museum. Wonderful views from one of the tower.
- The semi sweet red wine from Khareba, better tasted in their wine tunnels.
ACCOMMODATION
- Schuchmann Winery, beautiful house on the hill overlooking the valley. Comfortable rooms plus a great swimming pool (ask Daniel about that!).
- Dzveli Ubani, nice guest house located in romantic Sighnaghi. The owner is very sweet and her breakfast is 100% homemade!
RESTAURANTS
- Pancho Villa, the only mexican restaurant in the country, so much fun to have fajitas and margaritas in the middle of Georgia. The owner is adorable and the cocina so caliente!
- Schuchmann Restaurant @ Schuchmann Winery, a very good surprise! The food is excellent and the staff very professional, their wine of course is great.
BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
This week the best secret tip is not really a secret tip but just a note to not miss the Alaverdi Monastery when visiting the region. After a drive on a road lined with huge poplars, the monastery finally shows up and I (Magali) immediately loved it!
