In the first episode of Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran lecture series in English, Swami Mukundananda says that in all the Vedic scripture, the position accorded to the Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is exceptional. The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority.
However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagavat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran has something that even the Vedas do not have.
Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj says,
"Vandaniya hai Upanishad, inme gyan mahan
Shyam prem binu gyan so pran hin tanu jaan"
The Upanishads do have Divine knowledge but they do not have the bliss of Divine love and the sri... has both.
Swami Mukundananda also relates a story from Puranas. Guru of Mother Parvati- vamdev Maharaj asked her, "Parvati, your husband Lord Shiva wears this mund-maal (garlands of heads) of beautiful women. Have you never asked him?" He invoked jealousy in Parvati. She went and asked Lord Shiva the same question. Lord Shiva said, "Parvati, these are your heads. Each time you give-up your body, I am so attached to you that I pick-up your head and make a garland out of it." Parvati was pacified but she asks, "My Lord, I keep giving-up body but you never give up the body, what is the matter?" Lord Shiva says, "Parvati, the reason is that I have got the Amar Katha- the immortal story. And by virtue of that, I am immortal."
What is this immortal story, how Lord Shiva tells mother Parvati the story and what happens in between? Listen to the full episode of "Amar Katha- The Immortal Story- Bhagavatam in English- Swami Mukundananda- Part 1"

In "Bhagavatam in English - Part 2 by Swami Mukundananda-How to Rejuvenate Knowledge and Detachment?" Swamiji says, "many of you has been to holy places in India. When you go to the holy place, the pandit ji informs you of the Mahatmaya. So, when somebody has the mahatmaya in the mind, one realizes the importance and derives more devotional, spiritual benefit out of that entity."
A story goes that once Narad muni went to different places in the planet Earth. He visited the holy places as well. And then finally he reached Rishikesh. Out there, he met the four Kumaras- Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana and Sanatkumara. The four Kumaras asked Naradji, "why there is so much of sorry on your face, what is troubling you so much?" Naradji said, "O Sages, I am sad not for any of my own miseries, but for the miseries of the people of the world. I actually came to Earth planet, visited various places and I found that the people were not following the path of Dharma (righteousness). I also went to the holy places where God was being worshiped. But nevertheless, they were no devotion in the heart and then finally I went to Vrindavan. In Vrindavan I found a beautiful lady and she had two old men by her side. The lady was quite sad. I asked her who was she, who were those two men and why was she sad. The lady said she was Bhakti Devi (devotion) and the other two old men were her children- Gyan (knowledge) and Vairagya (detachment). She said that she was born in South India and she spent her childhood in Karnataka and she moved to Maharashtra. But when she came to Gujarat, she and her children became old. From Gujarat she had come to Vrindavan and there she got rejuvenated but her children remain old. Vrindavan is land of love, everybody is full of devotion but they are not interested in knowledge and detachment."
Bhakti Devi asked Naradji what shall she do. Naradji tried to solve her problem. he sat down there in meditation and there was an aakashvani (a celestial announcement from the sky)- Do a pious deed. Naradji thought the best he can do is recitation of Vedas and eventually knowledge and detachment became young again. But when he stopped again they aged. This went on for some time and naradji became more and more confused. Naradji, thus, puts this question in front of the four Kumaras, "how to rejuvenate knowledge and detachment again?"

In all the Vedic scripture, the position accorded to the Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran or the Bhagwat Katha is exceptional. The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority. However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagwat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam or Bhagwat Katha has something that even the Vedas do not have.
Parikshit, as the young king, started ruling in a righteous manner. There was justice and peace in his kingdom. One day, when Parikshit was out touring his kingdom, he saw a white cow, and by the side of it was a bull standing on one leg. The cow was shedding tears. They both were engaged in a conversation. The cow was actually the mother earth personified and the bull was dharma. Parikshit heard their discussion. The bull was asking the cow, "Why are you shedding tears? Are you seeing my sufferings and crying ?" The bull was consoling the cow by telling her that happiness and misery are both relative terms in the world. The cow replied, "No, it is not that. There are so many sins being committed on me, the earth, that I am disturbed. People are moving away from the path of Dharma."
Parikshit was deeply touched by the conversation. Meanwhile, a very ugly man came with a staff and started breaking the one remaining leg of the bull. Parikshit was furious and started chasing him. Finally, the ugly man surrendered. The man revealed his identity as Kaliyuga. Parikshit said, "What are you doing in my kingdom? Kaliyuga doesn't have any place in my kingdom." Kaliyuga replied, “By the will of God the ages come and go and even I have to come. You have to give me some place in your kingdom. Parikshit realized that he will have to give him shelter, and so he gave Kaliyuga four places to stay.

Shukdev Maharaj is an unique personality. His divine situation is- he is a leela shuk of Radhaji (divine parrot in Golok) and he serves in the pastimes of Radha Krishna by saying appropriate things for Their pleasure.
Same Shukdev Maharaj remained in the womb of Ved Vyas's wife for 12 years. He controlled his body there and refused to come out. Whenever Ved Vyas used to recite some Ved Mantra, Shukdevji would correct it from within. Ved Vyas was astonished. He wondered, "Who is this soul who is not yet born but is already finding defects in the Ved Mantra which I myself is reciting!" When Ved Vyas ultimately asked him to reveal his identity, Shukdevji said, "Father, how should I introduced myself, in different life times I have become different things, what should I say about who am I?" Ved Vyas, hearing such an answer, asked him to come out of the womb. But, Shukdevji refused and said that if he comes out God's maya will overpower him. Ultimately, Naradji's intervention and convincing, Shukdevji Maharaj came out of his mother's womb. As soon as he came out, Shukdevji, with the power of Yog made his body that of a 12 year old boy's and immediately left the home. In the jungle, on the stage of samadhi, Shukdevji heard few lines of Bhagavatam and got enchanted by the pastimes of Shree Krishna. He was, otherwise, meditating upon the formless light of God, but after listening to one line from Bhagavatam describing Shree Krishna's name, form, virtues and pastimes, Shukdevji couldn't go back to meditating upon formless Brahma.
Parikshit, after being bitten by Takshak Shukdevji Maharaj had only 7 days to survive. So, he went to Shukdev Maharaj and asked him, "What is the duty and means of welfare for a dying man?"

Shaunakadik asks Sutaji Maharaj, How did he get the Bhagavatam? Sutaji says, he got it from his Guru Shukadev, who got it from his Guru and father Ved Vyas. How did Ved Vyas got to write Bhagavatam? Ved Vyas compiled the Vedas. He also wrote the Mahabharat, 17 Puranas and the Vedant. Having written so much, Ved Vyas was still feeling dissatisfied. In this mode of discontent he sat on the banks of river Sarasvati and started thinking what is the matter. He says, "I am lifting my hands up and screaming, I have given so many instructions to human being in these scriptures, why is it that people's hearts are not getting influenced by it, is it because that I have not described pure Divine love?" He was contemplating over this when Narada Muni came. Ved Vyas shared his problem. Naradji says, "O Ved Vyas, you have written so much. But, you have not described the pure Bhaagavat Dharma. Now, write such a scripture which is beyond Dharma, Artha, Kaam, Moksha."
After this Naradji relates his own tale and says that in his previous life he was son of a daasi (maid servant). She was a widow. It was her duty to clean the ashram and do other chores. During Chaturmaas (4 months of monsoon), some sages came to stay in the ashram. It is the tradition that during these four months of monsoon, sages halt at one place. In the meantime, they used to recite God's pastime, give discourses on spiritual topics, etc. Naradji as a child used to sit and hear them and get enchanted by it. Sages were also very happy with Naradji's attentiveness. So, they used to grace him with prasad and seva. He used to eat the remnant of the sage's food which was cleaning his heart. After the 4 months, the sages went away from the ashram while Naradji became more desirous of their association and God's pastimes. Meanwhile, a snake came and bit his mother and she died. After that Naradji took off from the ashram. He had only one desire and that was to meet God. In his quest he went to few holy places and had darshan of Lord Krishna. I was in a state of joy but all of a sudden the lord disappeared. Now, he started going to all holy places in search of Lord Krishna and perform all kinds of austerities. Decades went by but he did not achieve any success. Finally he reached a point when he was all despondent. At that moment there was an akashvani (voice from the sky). God said to him, "Narad! that darshan which you got was given out of special grace, you did not deserve it. It was just to ignite your desire to see the Lord. As yet you are not qualified for the darshan. Spend your life in austerity and then in next life, you will be ever united with me."
