George Zambetas (25 January 1925 - 10 March 1992) was a Greek composer, singer and master of the bouzouki. He was born on 25 January 1925 in Metaxourgeio, but he was from Kythnos. His father was a barber, ehile his mother a noble known baritone of the time. From a very young age, George Zampetas showed great interest in music, since, while working in his father's barber shop as an assistant, he secretly squeezed his first melodies into the bouzouki. In 1932, at the age of 7, he won his first prize, as a first grade pupil, playing his first song in a school competition. In spite of the reactions, the young George continued with absolute dedication to serve his great love, while his acquaintance in 1938 with the great Vasilis Tsitsanis played a decisive role in shaping his artistic personality. In 1940 the Zambetas family moved to Aegaleo and from that moment Zambetas gained an indissoluble bond with the city. In 1942 and under conditions of impatience due to the Occupation, Zambetta created his first road band. During the 1950s Zambetas wrote his first real rebetika songs with well-known performers such as Prodromos Tsousousakis, Stelios Kazantzidis, Manolis Canaridis, Polly Panou and so on. From then on his talent and his amazing play were evident, but he had not yet settled in the well-known special style that established him as a unique show man in space. Over the next decade, his songs are very successful as he performs at the most popular entertainment venues while traveling abroad (Europe and America) and at the same time he participates in more than 100 films of the thriving at that time Greek Cinema. His creations such as «The sunsets», «In the morning», «There is no way to cross» etc. Remained unsurpassed and ranked him at the highest levels of musical solidity, During the 70s, when the morals began to change, Zambetta made a turn to satire in the form of a show to create feeling to the public. In the 1980s, this decline began, with Zambeta facing problems in his collaborations since the era no longer recognizes the values of the past. However, since 1990, record companies and media «Discover» his songs, which again dominate, knowing a new flourishing, to the listeners' preferences. Unfortunately, he is not only in the middle of his career but also in his life. At the beginning of 1992, he did not feel well, his condition worsened, his bones bruised. Ηe went to the hospital with diagnosis of advanced bone cancer. He left his last breath of cancer at the Sotiria hospital on March 10, 1992. He was 67 years old.
