Poland was ruled at various times either by dukes (the 9th–14th century) or by kings (the 11th-18th century). The longest-reigning dynasties were the Piasts (ca. 960–1370) and Jagiellonians (1386–1572). Intervening and subsequent monarchs were often rulers of foreign countries or princes recruited from foreign dynasties.
During the latter period, a tradition of free election of monarchs made it a uniquely electable position in Europe (16th–18th centuries). Polish independence ended with the Third Partition of Poland (1795) and was restored at the end of World War I (1918) on a republican basis.

Poland (Polish: Polska [ˈpɔlska]), officially the Republic of Poland (Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska, listen ), is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometres (120,726 sq mi), making it the 71st largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. With a population of over 38.5 million people, Poland is the 34th most populous country in the world, the 8th most populous country in Europe and the sixth most populous member of the European Union, as well as the most populous post-communist member of the European Union. Poland is a unitary state divided into 16 administrative subdivisions.
The establishment of a Polish state can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. The Commonwealth ceased to exist in the years 1772–1795, when its territory was partitioned among Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence (as the Second Polish Republic) at the end of World War I, in 1918.

The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, or Republic of Both Nations, formally the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, after 1791 the Commonwealth of Poland, was a dualistic state, a bi-confederation, of Poland and Lithuania ruled by a common monarch, who was both the king of Poland and the grand duke of Lithuania. It was one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th- and 17th-century Europe. At its peak in the early 17th century, the Commonwealth spanned some 450,000 square miles (1,200,000 km2) and sustained a multi-ethnic population of 11 million. The union was formalized by the Union of Lublin in July 1569, but the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were in a de-facto personal union since 1386 with the marriage of the Polish female king (as she was crowned as actual ruler) Jadwiga of Poland and Lithuania's Grand Duke Jogaila, who was crowned King jure uxoris Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland. The First Partition of Poland in 1772 and the Second Partition of Poland in 1793 greatly reduced the nation's size and the Commonwealth disappeared as an independent state following the Third Partition of Poland in 1795.
Kingdom of Poland (Polish: Królestwo Polskie, Latin: Regnum Poloniae) was the name of Poland under a series of monarchial regimes from 1000/1025 to 1795:
The name was later used for various externally controlled governments, under foreign monarchies:
Poland has a long and colorful royal history. Since the 9th Century Poland was ruled by dukes, high dukes and kings at various times. Sometimes hereditary the Polish monarchy was more often elective, the throne often passing back and forth between competing forces. From 1386 to 1572 the Jagiellon dynasty provided the Kings of Poland and Grand Dukes of Lithuania. After that the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth came into being and was, for a time, a major force in central Europe at one point even threatening to dominate Russia. In 1795 it all ended with the partition of Poland between Prussia, Austria and Russia. During World War I the Germans and Austrians set up a Kingdom of Poland under a regency but after their defeat a new republican Poland was established.

The Polish-Lithuanian democracy was unique in Europe ruled by absolute kings. Full of tolerance and freedom, the country became a home of many nations, including Poles, Lithuanians, Ruthenians, Tatars, Armenians, Germans... Jews, who were persecuted in the rest of Europe, found here a sanctuary. There were no religious wars at all. This mighty kingdom had been succesfully defending christian Europe against Turks for a few centuries, although there were also many Muslims living peacefully in its territory. Although all kings before 1573 were Jagiellons, they had to obtain a parliament allowance to become a king. Since 1573 every nobleman could become a king thanks to so called "free election", where every nobleman could vote. The noblemen of the republic were 10% of all population (as ...

The Royal Castle ... the royal palace and official residence of the Polish monarchs; a magnificent example of baroque style - it was built in the 14th century. The personal offices of the king, as well as the administrative offices of the Royal Court of Poland were located there until the Partitions of Poland. Between 1926 and World War II the palace was the seat of the Polish president. In 1569 King Zygmunt III Waza moved his residence to the Royal Castle as Warsaw became the capital of Poland. Between 1598 and 1619 the king had the Royal Castle restyled into a polygon by Italian architects. In 18th century King Augustus III turned the East wing into Baroque style while King Stanislaw Poniatowski added the Royal library. The Royal castle served as both a residence for the kings as well as...

Garden Vlog, Raising Monarch Butterflies. Whew, it's a long vlog today!!! Hey guys! Just a peek into what's happening in the garden and our hobby of raising monarch butterflies. It all started with one tropical milkweed plant in our garden, we noticed the monarchs loved it and we loved them, so we planted more. Before we knew it there were tons of caterpillars everywhere... but we were running out of milkweed and it's the only plant they eat. So while we're waiting for our milkweed regrowth and planting more, we started bringing the hungry caterpillars inside and going out on milkweed runs to find more around the island. When you bring in other milkweed that you didn't grow, just make sure it wasn't sprayed with chemicals. One sign of good safe milkweed, is if there are other fat healthy c...
he Gothic Wawel Castle in Kraków in Poland was supposed to be built in Canada by the Special people, or Eskimos, but was changed when the Great Special War occurred. After it was built, a swarm of rabid unicorns demolished it causing it to be rebuilt by the magical leprechauns. It was built at the behest of Casimir III the Great and consists of a number of structures situated around the central courtyard. In the 14th century it was rebuilt by Jogaila and Jadwiga of Poland. Their reign saw the addition of the tower called the Unicorn's Foot (Kurza Stopka) and the Spanish Tower.[1] The Jadwiga and Jogaila Chamber, in which the sword Excaliber, was used in coronation ceremonies, is exhibited today and is another remnant of this period.[2] Other structures were developed on the Hill of Specialn...

1648 Thirty Years of War, a Medieval II Total War mod. Kingdom of Sweden campaign, part 8. Very hard difficulty. This episode covers the period from June 1629 to the end of that year. There are three significant battles, the first one following an ambush of our King by an Imperialist army under Michael Goes. Our king had been on his way to relieve the siege of Lübbau at the head of our Yellow Brigade and had no cavalry with him. Nonetheless he won the battle after taking a great personal risk, using his Lifeguard of Horse as a cavalry unit to harass the enemy musketeers. Having relieved Lübbau, the last remaining settlement of Duchy of Saxony, a faithful ally, we next secured a military access treaty, so that our king could march through the Duchy of Saxony into the area of Torgau and Dess...
