The Critics' Circle was established in 1913 as an offshoot of the Society of Dramatic Critics, that was formed in 1906 this organization became inactive. It is the national Professional body of British critics for dance, drama, film, music, visual arts and architecture. The association is equivalent of the American Theatre Critics Association although much older.
For many years the Circle refrained from granting awards, but in 1980 the critics from the Film section (aka the London Film Critics Circle) established the ALFS Awards to acknowledge special achievements in the cinema. In 1989 the Drama section organized the first of its Critics' Circle Theatre Awards ceremonies, but it was not until 2002 that Dance awards were presented, followed from 2011 with annual awards by the Music and the Visual Arts and Architecture sections.
In addition to these specific annual awards, since 1988 the Circle has presented the Critics' Circle Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts, voted for by all members of the Circle. The award takes the form of an engraved crystal rose bowl presented at a celebratory luncheon which, in recent years, has been held at the Royal National Theatre.
Critics Circle may refer to:
A circle is a simple shape in Euclidean geometry. It is the set of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the centre; equivalently it is the curve traced out by a point that moves so that its distance from a given point is constant. The distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius.
A circle is a simple closed curve which divides the plane into two regions: an interior and an exterior. In everyday use, the term "circle" may be used interchangeably to refer to either the boundary of the figure, or to the whole figure including its interior; in strict technical usage, the circle is only the boundary and the whole figure is called a disk.
A circle may also be defined as a special ellipse in which the two foci are coincident and the eccentricity is 0, or the two-dimensional shape enclosing the most area per unit perimeter squared, using calculus of variations.
Danai Jekesai Gurira (born February 14, 1978) is a Zimbabwean American actress and playwright, best known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead, an AMC television horror drama series.
Gurira was born in Grinnell, Iowa to Josephine Gurira, a university librarian, and Roger Gurira, a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. Her parents came to the United States from Southern Rhodesia (what is today Zimbabwe) in 1964. She is the youngest of four siblings; Shingai (eldest) and Choni are her sisters and her brother Tare is a chiropractor. Gurira lived in Grinnell until December 1983, when at age five she and her family moved back to Harare, Zimbabwe after the country had gained independence.
She attended high school at Dominican Convent High School. Afterward, Gurira returned to the United States to study at Macalester College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She considers her experience of growing up in Zimbabwe and then returning to the United States to have had a major influence on her perspective. Gurira also earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. Awards are often signified by trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins, or ribbons. An award may carry a monetary prize given to the recipient; for example, the Nobel Prize for contributions to society or the Pulitzer Prize for literary achievements. An award may also simply be a public acknowledgment of excellence, without any tangible token or prize.
Awards can be given by any person or institution, although the prestige of an award usually depends on the status of the awarder. Usually, awards are given by an organization of some sort, or by the office of an official within an organization or government. For instance, a special presidential citation (as given by the President of the United States) is a public announcement giving an official place of honor (e.g., President Ronald Reagan gave a special presidential citation in 1984 to the Disney Channel for its excellent children's television programming.)
