"Mr. Vain" is a song by German Eurodance group Culture Beat. It was released in April 1993 as the lead single from the album Serenity. The song achieved huge success worldwide, reaching number-one in Australia, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It also spent ten weeks at number one on the RPM Dance chart in Canada.

Background and chart performances

Written by Steven Levis, Nosie Katzmann and Jay Supreme and produced by Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweier, "Mr. Vain" was 1993's best-selling single across Europe. Typical of the Eurodance style of the time, the song first broke in Germany before breaking more widely through the summer, eventually topping the chart in twelve countries. It reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a gold disc. Mr. Vain also peaked at number two for two weeks on the American dance charts.Tania Evans is the female singer in "Mr. Vain" and the rapper is Jay Supreme.

It first entered the charts in the United Kingdom in late July 1993 at number 24 climbing to number one for the week ending 28 August 1993, at times it was selling twice as much its nearest challenger "It Keeps Rainin'" by Bitty McLean during its 4 week reign at the top. It spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart and was the tenth biggest selling single in Britain in 1993.

Culture Beat

Culture Beat is a German Eurodance project formed in 1989 by Torsten Fenslau. The act has gone through a number of line-up changes over the years; they achieved the most success whilst fronted by singer Tania Evans and rapper Jay Supreme. Their 1993 single "Mr. Vain" was a number-one hit in eleven European countries, and the act is thought to have sold more than 10 million records worldwide.

Biography

Origins and formation

Torsten Fenslau, who initially had a desire for becoming an architect, had been working as a DJ at the Frankfurt nightclub Dorian Gray for 11 years, when he decided to form Culture Beat with his friends Jens Zimmermann and Peter Zweier.

1989–1991: Horizon

Their first single, the ambient house track "Der Erdbeermund", with a spoken vocal in German by Jo van Nelsen, peaked at number 11 on the German singles chart. Versions in English and French were also released (titled "Cherry Lips" and "Les lèvres cerises", respectively). An instrumental version was also a club hit in the United Kingdom, where it reached number 55.

Mr. Wrong

Mr. Wrong is a 1996 American romantic/black comedy film starring Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Pullman. DeGeneres still mentions it occasionally in her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It was a critical failure and a box office bomb.

Plot summary

The film begins with Martha Alston (DeGeneres) in a wedding gown incarcerated in a Mexican prison. The investigators call her Mrs. Crawford and listen to her explain why she committed murder on her wedding day.

Some time ago, at her younger sister's wedding, Martha is pestered by her family about when she'll get married. At work, she rejects a date with a younger coworker, Walter (John Livingston). Disappointed by her dull Valentine's Day blind date, she goes home to sulk in front of the TV, where, inundated by romantic imagery, she is prompted to get out of the house.

Martha goes to a bar where she drops her quarter in front of the jukebox. She bends down to get it when a man shows up and selects the same song she would have chosen. He is Whitman Crawford (Pullman), and they instantly hit it off. They go back to his house and have sex. He says he's a poet and an investor. He reads her one of his poems.
