Bob Dylan (/ˈdɪlən/; born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, artist and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation. Nevertheless, early songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the American civil rights and anti-war movements. After he left his initial base in the American folk music revival, his six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" altered the range of popular music in 1965. His mid-1960s recordings, backed by rock musicians, reached the top end of the United States music charts while also attracting denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement.
Dylan's lyrics have incorporated various political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard, and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song—from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but songwriting is considered his greatest contribution.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.

"Subterranean Homesick Blues" is a song by Bob Dylan, recorded on January 14, 1965, and released as a single on Columbia Records, catalogue 43242, on March 8. It appeared some two weeks later as the lead track to the album Bringing It All Back Home. It was Dylan's first Top 40 hit in the U.S., peaking at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also entered the Top 10 on the singles chart in the United Kingdom. The song has subsequently been reissued on numerous compilations, the first being his 1967 singles compilation Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. One of Dylan's first 'electric' pieces, "Subterranean Homesick Blues" was also notable for its innovative film clip, which first appeared in D. A. Pennebaker's documentary, Dont Look Back.
An acoustic version of the song, recorded the day before the single, was released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991.
"Subterranean Homesick Blues" is a three-way amalgam of Jack Kerouac, the Guthrie/Pete Seeger song "Taking It Easy" ('mom was in the kitchen preparing to eat/sis was in the pantry looking for some yeast') and the riffed-up rock'n'roll poetry of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business".

This was recorded in 1966 so it was a few years before The Band split and did their own thing. I think it's pretty cool to see Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel playing with Dylan at such an early time, so early The Band didn't even look like themselves because this was before they got the look that we're all so familiar with. Hope you enjoy! EDIT: Robbie plays an amazing solo at the very end of the song right after the camera pans away from Richard
“I had little in common with and knew even less about a generation that I was supposed to be the voice of…”, Bob Dylan writes in his 2004 autobiography “Chronicles Volume One”. Plain words that symbolised his diffi cult relationship with the off stage world. Adored by his fans and thought of as some kind of Messiah by the media, Dylan spent the better part of his life trying to escape their stifl ing embrace. Even Bob Dylan himself can’t deny the social impact of his songs. For four decades, “The thinking man‘s Elvis” (Warhol) has been a captivator, provoker, confuser and innovator who released more than 500 songs and played thousands of sometimes wondrous, sometimes wonderful concerts around the globe. One of those concerts was on May 23rd 1976 when Dylan played in the frame of his “Rolli...

Blonde on Blonde is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's seventh studio album, released in 1966 by Columbia Records. It is believed to be the first significant double album in rock music, its length forcing it to two LPs, although some digital reissues fit the album on one compact disc. It is notable for injecting Dylan's brand of blues rock, fully established on Highway 61 Revisited, with a more eclectic sound and even more surreal lyrics. Despite its uncompromising nature, it has come to be regarded as one of Dylan's greatest achievements, and "one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever made".
Again new video for today. I gathered all the takes I could find and upload from this iconic album into one compilation, starting with most of the original pressing before the late December 1974 sessions (what many call the "Original" Blood On The Tracks) and then in chronological order the takes from all the sessions that are allowed by copyright laws. I strongly encourage you to read also the text from Pete Hamill that was on the back cover of the album. It resonates more and more as the day goes by. Here is an excerpt: "In the end, the plague touched us all. It was not confined to the Oran of Camus. No. It turned up again in America, breeding in-a-compost of greed and uselessness and murder, in those places where statesmen and generals stash the bodies of the forever young. The pl...

A look back at Bob Dylan's amazing career. He's been around for almost 50 years as a musical artist and has remained one of the most unique personalities of all time!
In december of 1965 Bob Dylan met with the Bay Area press at KQED studios in San Francisco. KQED was a Public Educational TV station that started broadcasting in 1954. Bob Dylan met the press on friday december 3rd 1965 to promote his 5 Bay Area shows. Dylan fans can thank Ralph Gleason for preserving on video the entirety of the broadcast. Gleason's association with KQED dated back to 1963. He produced a music show "Jazz Casual" which featured many of the top jazz artists of the day. Ralph Gleason wrote in 1973: "When Bob Dylan's five concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area were scheduled in december 1965, the idea was proposed that he hold a press conference in the studios of KQED, the educational television station. Dylan accepted and flew out a day early to make it. He arrived early for...

A historic biography about the poet of protest music in America This four-hour biography of Bob Dylan, directed by Martin Scorsese, synthesizes rare and raw footage of Dylan’s entry onto the music scene in the early 1960s. This film about the reclusive poet-singer who rose to fame during the protest era held together by a single long, reflective interview with Dylan. The documentary also includes interviews with seminal popular musicians, music producers and towering cultural figures who knew Dylan well, including Allen Ginsberg, Joan Baez, Peter Yarrow, and Pete Seeger. Telling the story of the coming of age of an iconic musician, it is a portrait of an existential man bursting with metaphors and compelled to sing them out loud. It is also a story about alienation that illuminates a pe...

He moved to Greenwich Village in 1961 and within a few years, he would be viewed by many as the voice of a generation as he wrote some of the decade’s most famous songs, including “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The Times They Are a-Changing,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Masters of War,” “Desolation Row” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.” After emerging from the New York City folk scene, Dylan explored many other genres, from rock to country to the blues. He continues to tour to this day. In 2008, the Pulitzer Prize jury awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of ex...

Goin' out to the country
I'm headed for the birds and bees
Away from the city life
Defined to bear their occupy
Take it easy now, oh my friend
We're playin' the blues, I'm singin' a song
I'm a long way from where I belong
Sittin' in the long grass
Watchin' the sun go down
Listenin' to the crickets
Far from the dead of town
Take it easy, now, oh my friend
We're playin' the blues, I'm singin' a song
I'm a long way from where I belong
Lookin' for a new life
Now, the old one's gone
All I got is in my bag
And my heart is in my song
Take it easy, now, oh my friend
Playin' the blues, I'm singin' a song
I'm a long way from where I belong
Long way from where I belong
Long way from where I belong
Long way from where I belong
