Rasmus Faber

Rasmus Faber (born Rasmus Peter Faber, on May 16, 1979) is a music artist from Stockholm, Sweden. He is a pianist,DJ, remixer, composer, record producer, sound engineer and founder of the record label Farplane Records. He is mostly active in the electronic dance music genre, but also ventures into a wide variety of other musical styles. Rasmus performs solo as a DJ and pianist, and live with his band the RaFa Orchestra.

History

Early Life and Musician Career

Rasmus Faber was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His father was jazz saxophonist Gunnar Bergsten. Rasmus started playing piano on his own at age 7, and started taking jazz piano lessons soon thereafter. His schooling also included choir singing and music theory. In his late teens Rasmus attended one of Sweden's most renowned music colleges/high schools, where he met a lot of the musicians he would continue to work with throughout his career and to this day. There he also attained many of the skills that would fuel his career as a jazz pianist, arranger, and composer. At age 20, following his musical education, Rasmus Faber started working as a session musician, and as a pianist and musical director for local acts in Sweden. At age 25, Rasmus decided to quit this career to focus solely on his own artistry, while still performing as a pianist in his own musical projects and in his DJ sets.

Dubtribe Sound System

Dubtribe Sound System is a San Francisco based electronic musical group that produced and performed live worldwide between 1991 and 2005.

Dubtribe consisted of singers Sunshine Jones and Moonbeam Jones, but also included many sit in and on-tour musicians over the years. Originally born in a rent party, Dubtribe Sound System distinguished itself as performers by performing live for many hours, rather than replaying their recordings from DAT tapes or portable computers, and touring without stopping, often bringing their own sound, lights, and traveling family with them. But unlike its few counterparts in North America, Dubtribe would depart from the warehouse movement and establish itself in the mid-1990s as a grass-roots tour de force, refusing help, press, or money from any outside interests.

Origins

Sunshine Jones, an ex-punk rocker and Bay Area native, was taking in the still-emerging sounds of hip-hop. At club Townsend, DJ Doc Martin broke out some house music. "One night he just started playing Marshall Jefferson and Ten City, and it was a real shock," Sunshine says. "I left angry with Martin because he sold out on hip-hop."

In 1980 she moved to McGraw-Hill in New York as a reporter for Nucleonics Week, NuclearFuel and Inside N.R.C. In 1984 she transferred to London and two years later covered the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster for Business Week and Nucleonics Week. In 2004, Ms. Cooke returned to the United States to complete her book In Mortal Hands: A Cautionary History of the Nuclear Age. Cooke lives with her son in Kensington, Maryland, and is currently editor of Nuclear Intelligence Weekly.
