The European Union’s failure to consider the smooth integration of breakaway regions is tarnishing its democratic credentials. The EU seems to prefer the inclusion of new, poorly prepared members, than the assimilation of established, firmly pro-European nations such as Scotland and Catalonia. Does Europe need a practical new strategy for the government of its regions? Do we need less centralised 19th Century command and control, and more emphasis on regional autonomy, including tax powers? The issue for Europe’s separatist regions is ‘democracy’ - a right to choose. A right to self-determination. It’s time for a modern approach unchained by history. http://www.freemusicteacher.com/ Piano Tutorial by Ramin Yousefi How To Play Piano: "Fum, Fum, Fum" Catalan You Can Learn Piano From Basic to Advance by Watching These Music Clips Fum, Fum, Fum (/ˌfʊm ˌfʊm ˈfʊm/ FUUM FUUM FUUM; Catalan: [ˈfum ˈfum ˈfum]) is a traditional Catalan Christmas carol. It is thought to have originated in the 16th or 17th century. The word "fum" means smoke in Catalan, and it may simply refer to the smoke rising from a chimney as seen from afar, or, as indicated in the New Oxford Book of Carols, "may imitate the sound of a drum (or perhaps the strumming of a guitar)". It is not typical of Spanish tradition but rather of Catalan tradition. Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) defines "fum" as "to play upon a fiddle," quoting Ben Jonson, "Follow me, an...
In this month's Missions update, Pamela Catalan talks about ministry opportunities in northern Spain with Spanish youth and Muslim refugees.
Spain's Constitutional Court has partially ruled Catalonia's sovereignty claim as illegal. Lawmakers in the northern region last year adopted a declaration of self determination, calling for a referendum. The Madrid court said they have no right to infringe Spain's constitution. Catalan's President Artur Mas who has promised to hold a vote on November 9 has been encouraged by a groundswell of public support for his separatist policies. ... Catalan (/ˈkætəlæn/; autonym: català [kətəˈɫa] or [kataˈɫa]) is a Romance language named for its origins in Catalonia, in what is northeastern Spain and adjoining parts of France. It is the national and only official language of Andorra, and a co-official language of the Spanish autonomous communities of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community (where the language is known as Valencian, and there exist regional standards). It also has semi-official status in the city of Alghero on the Italian island of Sardinia. It is also spoken with no official recognition in parts of the Spanish autonomous communities of Aragon (La Franja) and Murcia (Carche), and in the historic French region of Roussillon/Northern Catalonia, roughly equivalent to the department of Pyrénées-Oriental...
Catalonia /kætəˈloʊniə/ (Catalan: Catalunya; Occitan: Catalonha; Spanish: Cataluña) is an autonomous community of Spain, designated a "nationality" by its Statute of Autonomy. Catalonia comprises four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. The capital and largest city is Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain, and the centre of one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe, and it comprises most of the territory of the former Principality of Catalonia, with the remainder now part of France. Catalonia is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the Spanish regions of Aragon and the Valencian Community to west and south respectively. The official languages are Spanish, Catalan, and Aranese (an Occitan dialect). In the 10th centu...
Sixty million visitors come to Spain each year but most head for the tourist resorts in the south. Shilpa Mehta's journey takes her through the less traveled northern Spain. Starting in Barcelona, Shilpa explores the city's rich architecture and discovers Flamenco dancing in the street. Just outside Barcelona is the small town of Terrassa, where Shilpa watches a Catalan traditional event of building human castles. From Terrassa Shilpa heads for Pamplona in the province of Navarra, where the annual Bull Run known as 'El Encierro' is taking place. Running alongside the bulls while they are herded through the streets is seen as a test of machismo, but participants risk serious injury and even death. Shilpa hitches a lift north to San Sebastian, where she samples the tapas dish unique to th...

The creative spirit of Spain's Catalunya — the land of Picasso, Gaudí, and Salvador Dalí — is on a roll. We'll get caught up in the festivity of Barcelona, enjoying the vibrant street scenes, tasty tapas, and pedestrian-friendly Gothic Quarter. Then we'll take a scenic side trip to mountaintop Montserrat, and finish with an artist's pilgrimage along the Costa Brava to Salvador Dalí country. In seaside Cadaques, we'll visit Dalí's home, and in nearby Figueres, we'll experience his playfully surreal mausoleum/museum. © 2008 Rick Steves' Europe
