Synopsis “Mr. Sea” is adapted from "Strange Stories from a Chinese studio”(LiaoZhai ZhiYi) , Original novel by Pu SongLing(1640-1715) a Ghost writer of Qing Dynasty. It tells a mysterious story about a scholar with a serpent-tempter and a prostitute on a wasteland : In the distant East China Sea, there was an ancient island covered by millions of colorful flowers; unphased by the cold of winter, they remained always in bloom. The island was uninhabited, with very few people having ever been there. Curious Zhang had always been drawn to wandering and hunting. One day, he was rowing a boat to cross the sea, trying to reach the uninhabited island...... Director’s Statement My preference to porcelain traces back to my passion of China’s traditional art. Porcelain is a traditional material that carries long-standing historical and cultural accumulations and I’ve been attempting to dig out a new language from such traditional material. Mr.Sea generalizes various mediums. I experiment on a new medium to express the porcelain -- using animation film work to bring porcelain status back to alive. “Alive” here not only means “moving” but also emphasizing the creation form that has fresh life force. The jade-like light of porcelain, light from moving and light of films experimentally combine and form the specific “language of light” for this film. Such “language of light” is the “spirit” of the rest languages seen in the film; it’s the language among the porcelain, sculpture and film language -- it is their interactions that fulfil the overall “porcelain-visual” in the film. This display of “porcelain-visual” as the main visual and formal language has both accurately and sufficiently expressed the characteristics of porcelain and also effectively delivered the specific aesthetic of “Liaozhai” and the quality of Chinese ancient mysterious novels. I made out the film by ceramics sculpture art. The value of this film is aimed at taking ceramics as a language and how to exert the characteristics of this language in it. It mounts a metamorphosis from potter's clay to sculpture, then to the ceramics motion. In my opinion, everything is so delicacy. For me, ceramics is material, language, also, the target I pour out with. Meanwhile, this film is also blended with the new content and mode of the artist under traditional eastern culture, aesthetics and contemporary context. And it tells the ultimate concern about human beings and existence according to the tiny personal view and the bardian art language.
